Got someone asking me which to get.  Guy can get either for $499 and both do backward combat, so, what do I tell him.  The 80g comes with Motorstorm for free as well.

I know the 60 has the HW backwards whereas the 80 does it in software.  Big deal or not?

Should he go with the newer 80 version or the older PS3 technology just for the HW backwards over the software?

I'd ask him whether he really has a lot of PS2 games that he still wants to play (if he doesn't, might as well get the bigger hard drive/software compatibility model). I'm debating getting a PS3 soon myself (hoping to see some holiday shopping rebates), and other than maybe the God of War games, there's really nothing on PS2 that I'd still bother playing.

Personally I'd go for the 60GB model and hardware BC. Motorstorm is cheap enough used nowadays to pick it up after the fact, and the added HD space is a waste, IMHO.

If he is at all interested in the backwards compatibility, then the 60 Gig no question.  The only other difference in hardware is the extra 20 gigs which not only isn't necessary but the HDDs are easily swapped out later if need be.

If he buys it from Bestbuy they are giving you an extra controller or choice of a free game for the 60GB version thats where I bought mine.

"The Battle of the George Foreman Grills!!!!"  Sorry, I couldn't help myself.  biggrin

I'd probably go with the 80gb because you don't know what's on the horizon where those extra 20gb may/will make a difference.
