PS2 games -- help me out

Ok considering my wife is probably going to give the PS3 to me, and I've never had any experiences with PS3 games.....  What should I be on the lookout for?

I know:  Kingdom Hearts/Kingdom Hearts 2.     Shadow of Colossus?

What else?     Btw -- are there any quirky games similiar to Gamecube's Animal Crossing, or Xbox360's Viva Pinata for instance, that I think about picking up?    I've been totally out of the loop on PS2 since I've never had one.

Lego Star Wars 2 is pretty good. Heck, even the first one. The folks around my home like Dragon Quest VIII, so that might be a good idea.

It's hard to get quirkier than Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari. Both are bizarre yet oddly compelling and cute. There's also the Harvest Moon series for your farming and socializing needs.

Also, God of War rules for slaking that bloodlust after a bad day at work.

Definitely grab Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time which is a masterpiece for the PS2. Skip the second one and buy The Two Thrones after completing the first one. Trust me on this. :slywink:

Remember, Sands of Time is free on GameTap for those that have it, and quite possibly, better on the PC.. One of the reasons I skipped this title for the PS2 was because of the PC one being available.

Do you have to be a member of Gametap?  How much is it a month?

Gametap has some kind of deal where is like $4.95 a month or some shit right now.. But they have all of the Prince of Persias, and well, 900 other games or something.

I played a bit of Sands of Time last night.. Wow, nice game..

I second Katamari Damacy.  Strangely compelling game.

Also, Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 are great games.  DC2's only drawback is that there's SO much to do you feel like you're whipping through the game world so fast you're not seeing everything.  For instance, I played it for 40 hours, haven't finished it, and still feel like I've missed a TON of gameplay.  However, oddly enough, Dark Cloud 1 is far more compelling to me.  I really can't figure out why.

I would also consider Eyetoy, it uses a USB network camera to put you in the game and manipulate on screen objects.  Sort of like a poor man's Wii at this point.

Dark Cloud 2 is part of my ever-shrinking console backlog. I'm holding off starting it until next year though because once I start it I'm not stopping until I finish it... which will be weeks from the sounds of it.

I'd also grab the second and fourth Ratchet & Clank games (never played the first one and thought the third one sucked) as they are both great fun.

It just felt "off" compared to the previous one. The energy wasn't there as I played through it and the funny was in equally short supply. Not to mention the weapons were no where near as inventive as they are in parts two and four. But I was a huge fan of the next installment, "Deadlocked," so I think they came back firing on all cylinders.

Deadlocked has a full single-player game, but it's supposed to be quite a bit shorter than the previous games.  As for R&C 3, I thought it was the best and funniest of the first three games.

Deadlocked has a really funny single player storyline and never once have I played it in multi. I still got about a month's worth of enjoyment out of it so I wouldn't go so far as to throw around the "short" word. :slywink:

Agreed.  It felt the tightest all around.  The second game is amazing as well but there are several elements that weren't executed very well and UYA wisely jettisoned them.

I've just jumped on the PS2 bandwagon for the first time this holiday season as well.

These are the 9 games I've bought in order to give me several months of fun in my favorite genres.

I also recommend this game for the Xbox every chance I get but Mercenaries is also available on PS2. Awesome, awesome game that blows away the GTA series completely. I'm not sure how it played on the PS2 but this game rocks hard.

I have to give a hearty recommendation to God of War.  By far my overall favorite game for the PS2.  Great story, amazing visuals (especially with progressive scan if you have your PS2 hooked up with component cables), one of the best musical scores I've ever heard in a game (rivalling Oblivion), and addictive and completely visceral gameplay.  It was by far my favorite game of the PS2 generation.

How about Bully?

Smaller version of GTA without the visceral thrill of popping a cap up some random guys arse.  My initial impression was ' ' but after a couple of days it was ' '.  Granted it may have gotten better, but with everything else coming out I didn't have the time to make myself try and like it before I traded it in.

So long as you turned it off the second you walked out of Pandora's Temple about 2/3 of the way through.
