I personally won't be suprised it this proves true and it's what I've been waiting for to sway me to make the purchase. With the NA numbers the way they are there's no way I could see Sony avoiding this.

Seems like a holiday drop would be better than March. I'm sure there's some fiscal reason for waiting.

How stupid of them. Because now through dec 24 isn't the busiest shopping time.

In semi related news amazon will be having a sweet deal for a bundled ps3 for 200. But good luck getting invitation.

I doubt that FF13 will help revive the PS3, at least not in the States, since it will be coming out simultaneously on the Xbox 360.

Yep. Not to be doom and gloom, but they need to take action now.

The only thing dumber than waiting until March of 09 is leaking the price drop in Nov of 08.  Why would anyone buy a PS3 over the holiday season now?

My theory is that Sony made certain guarantees about maintaining price to their Blu-ray partners so they wouldn't be seen as undercutting them in the hardware market.  With BD players at $200 now, the PS3 isn't the slam-dunk Blu-ray player even for those who don't care about games that it was six months ago.

If you go back to Sony's original budget projections for this fiscal year they actually planned for flat year on year growth for PS3 which was the first indicator that they had no plans to drop price this year and were well aware that it would hurt them in the console market.  But they may have more to gain in the long run by allowing their BD partners to push BD players for the living room.

sometime after Feb 18, 2009 is my guess for next price drop.  icon_biggrin

I'm going to agree with Kevin that it's likely to help grow the Bluray marketshare, and give more time to bring down mfg. costs.

Early next year a huge rush of digital tv's should happen. yes, all geeks know analog will disappear and are prepared, but I guarantee a huge portion of the population won't know until Feb 18, 2009.

Also, let's say they can drop it to 349-299 this holiday.

It's still not terribly competitive with the 360 at 199 entry, so I'm sure some number cruncher figured it's better to lose the holiday and try again next year, when the HD market expands.

While no price drop has happened yet, there seems to be some interesting bundles appearing through stores like Wal-Mart.
PS3 160gb with three games (LBP, GT5P, Uncharted) and three BluRay movies (300, Blood Diamond, Batman Begins) for $499 Canadian, where as the 80GB sells for $399 as a regular price.

That's how we got ours, on Black Friday. It was the 60GB PS3, the whole Firefly series on Blu-Ray, and Star Wars Force Unleashed for $299.

You won't see a price cut till the costs are in line to allow them to do so...whenever that is.

No company has ever admitted a price cut before the date it becomes effective.  It would be the equivalent of asking consumers not to buy your product.  Once they do announce it expect to hear cries of 'market value leader' and 'we've listened to our fans.'

If there was a decent price cut, I might get a PS3... though I'd rather wait for a price cut and backwards compatibility. That's probably not gonna happen for a long time I suspect, maybe even until the PS4 (?)...   icon_confused

Man, now I was actually thinking about getting one seriously, and I don't know whether to go for it or wait for a drop.  Thinking about waiting out the month and seeing if anything develops.

Isn't E3 or whatever it's called now usually the time and place for a drop announcement? Mid May or so?

I guess that means August is the earliest that I might buy one.  After waiting this long I'm just not willing to get a system with fewer features for the current price.

What he said!   nod

I just won't buy one at it's current price, since I mostly play 360 and DS games anyway.  So, for me, it would be sometime after a price drop, and if a PS3 exclusive game was released that I absolutely had to have.  I'm normally not very patient when it comes to the latest video gaming "stuff" - but in this case, I'm finding it quite easy.

We got one in May because Gamestop had a deal for $100.00 off when you trade in your PS2 and a few games.  Since the PS2 was gathering dust, seemed like a good time. So I guess the $100.00 price drop will move more units.
