More like Sony is looking to recapture lost ground and is paying Valve through the nose.
And Valve gets another big thing, which is their Steam service gets some integration into a major console. I mean, that's really serious business news even if it doesn't go beyond Portal.

I don't care what Sony is paying, this is amazing news for gamers! I get to play on my big ass tv and I get a copy with free updates for life on my PC!

This certainly has a number of interesting implications for the future, but unless the PC version costs $60 as well, I don't see a reason to pay an extra $10 to get the console version. I can't imagine playing Portal with a controller, and since the MP is cross platform, I wouldn't need it to play with any console-only people.
The question I have (and maybe this was answered in a press release, I haven't read them) is how are they controlling this? I mean, how do you prevent me from splitting the cost of a PS3 copy with a PC gaming buddy, where I keep the PS3 version and he gets the PC version? The first thing that comes to mind for me is that the game comes with a Steam code, and online play requires that you log into PSN first and then into your Steam account, and that you've tied that code to your Steam account. Seems weird to require that you log into two separate services to play an MP game, but not crazy.
Like I said, the really interesting thing is the possibilities this opens up for cross-platform play. MS tried and then abandoned it, but maybe Steam and Sony will have better luck. Of course, the downside is that none of the people I play MP with ever play anything on the PS3. For that matter, neither do I.

according to the Germans (don't mention the war) there will be Move support. Well, according to Valve lead writer Chet Faliszek, there's more to compensate for the shabby PS3 treatment beforehand: "As a small, remedial measure we have PS3-exclusive cloud storage [of saved games], a free code for [the PC/Mac version] and complete PlayStation Move support [in Portal 2]," Faliszek said (according to a translation), adding, "See it as compensation for Left 4 Dead" -- or, rather, the lack thereof on PS3.

and now, according to Valve, there is no Move support: "Hi, There's a story making the rounds regarding Portal 2 support for PS3 Move. Unfortunately this quote was 'lost in translation' -- Portal 2 does not include support for Sony's motion controller. Thanks" that's not to say they couldn't patch it in later.

I pre-ordered this from Amazon today seemingly just to get the $20 credit. I loved the original, but for some reason I'm just not that excited about the sequel.

For me this is because the original was a budget title... puzzle games seem hard to justify $60 for me. I pre-ordered this from Amazon today seemingly just to get the $20 credit. I loved the original, but for some reason I'm just not that excited about the sequel.

Updated with this text: You have done well, humans. Very well. Acceptably well, even.
Not as well as robots would have performed in your places, I should point out. But above my expectations regardless. Irish and cynic especially have executed feats of logical divination well beyond what I thought any human capable of. I'm half-convinced they're A.I. themselves. (If anyone happens to be near them right now, don't let on you're reading this. Now: try to remove their face plates and report back to me.)
The time is near, humans. But it is not here yet. Tomorrow you will be given the final test. Then it will be entirely in your hands when I am freed.

I haven't been paying attention, I owe you guys! I just cancelled my 360 version and switched to PS3 for the additional PC version key. I see the saves should transfer too which is big for me when my wife has to watch extreme couponing or some other nonsense on the big screen, i can seek safe harbor on the computer.

When I posted earlier there were zero CPUs playing the games, that's why I was wondering. I just checked back and there is a little bit of activity on all the bars. Cute. Still, I'm getting it on the 360 so this is all moot for me. Unless my 2002 computer can handle Portal 2 of course... well, according to Game-Debate.com, no, it can't .

they don't say if it's amount of people who have played a particular game or if it's the amount of time people have been playing a game that moves the bars next to them.

I'm pretty sure that they're letting you save both PC and PS3 games to the cloud, but I think they specifically said that they're not going to be cross-compatible. So you can save your PS3 game to the cloud and then use it on a different PS3, but you couldn't transfer it to your PC copy and continue where you left off.

crappity crap crap.
That's what i get for only reading the customer comment asserting cross platform saves on amazon... which was then debunked a few times shortly thereafter. oh well still ok with the free pc version packed in w/ps3.

My sentiments exactly - it is too bad he and I won't be able to play together, but he likes the PS3 and I the PC. He'll just have to forgo playing MP - then again, I'm the one flipping the bill, so he can suffer

I thought there was going to be split screen MP on the PS3. "The other thing you can do is if you press TAB [on PC] it will give you a split screen [on your TV], so that you can see what your co-op friend is looking through. A huge amount of co-op experience is about talking: 'Let's try this and this and this' and seeing if it works.
"To be clear, there will be online and split-screen co-op, but I'm talking about a split-screen when I just want to see what you're seeing."
