Thinking of getting one "big ticket" item when the sales are on. Far Cry 3 or Dishonored?

I haven't played FC3, but Dishonored was pretty damn awesome. It's a must-play if you enjoyed the Thief series.

I loved Dishonered. Played through once and immediately started a second "no kill" run-through. Just finished it up and enjoyed it just as much. That said, I've keep hearing great things about FC3 and I'm getting close to picking it up.

I'm in the same boat of trying to choose between Dishonored and Far Cry 3 and am currently leaning towards Far Cry 3. Mostly just because I really enjoy open world action games, haven't played one for a while, and keep hearing such great things about FC3.

The most important thing to remember when choosing between the two games is that while Far Cry 3 is a shooter with worthwhile stealth elements, Dishonored is fundamentally a stealth game with combat elements. It has a very different flow, and while you *can* run headlong into guard patrols for toe-to-toe combat, the game mechanics are very much set up for springing from the shadows and thinning the enemy ranks one slice at a time. I finished the game on Hard and, like Gratch, I absolutely loved it. It's the best Thief game since The Metal Age. Still, if I were in the mood for a less deliberate run-and-gun experience, I'd much sooner reach for the open world pyrotechnics of Far Cry 3. For an opposing viewpoint, I know the entire staff at No High Scores found Dishonored to be a thoroughly "meh" experience. I don't happen to agree with their criticisms, at least not to the point of diminishing how much I enjoyed it, but dissenting opinions might be important if you're on the fence. -Autistic Angel

I'll play both eventually, but right now I don't want to drop $60+ on 2 games but have a taste for something "2012".

I loved Dishonored (my GOTY) but as people have pointed out above it’s a stealth/exploration game not a shooter. If you play it like a shooter you are going to be disappointed because you will miss most of the game and finish very quickly.
Which sort of experience are you looking for?
Also, with all the sales that have hit for these games in the last two weeks why are you paying full price for either one of them?

I'm not, I figure on sale they will be around $30, so $60 for both.

Dishonored has already been $29.99 a couple of times at various holiday sales (you can get it for $31.50 at Green Man Gaming with the code GMG30-DPLIM-DN831). as for Far Cry 3 Ubisoft had it on sale in their online store on the 23rd for about $40, but I'm guessing that since it just came out you're going to be hard pressed to find it close to $30 for a bit.

Both are excellent. Dishonored isn't nearly as long as far cry 3 is though. Obviously not making it a better game, but worth mentioning. Dishonored was very much a "thief" game, and far cry 3 is, to stick with the cliche but somewhat accurate description, is skyrim with guns. You can't go wrong with either really.

Sounds like Far Cry might be the better value for the money right now.
Dishonored doesn't have zombies, right? I stopped playing Thief because the bonehoard was freaking me out.

Yeah, I also have $12 credit at GMG, it's. shame the don't carry Far Cry (or any UBI games, maybe?) I don't know, that Bonehoard just really got to me! So dark too. I'm playing FEAR Extraction Point now and it keeps messing with me!

Dishonered has Weepers. Plague infected types who run at you and want to bite you. So.... That said, the game reacts to your play style. The fewer people you kill the fewer Weepers. There weren't that many spots where they posed a problem on my stealth play.
Also, agree that the game doesn't hold up well played run and gun style. Started a kill em all run through and lost interest on the second mission. It's...too easy?

I highly recommend saving the stealth / Low Chaos run for a second playthrough of Dishonored. Doing it well expects a better familiarity with the game mechanics and requires you to forgo the use of half the tools in your arsenal. Grenades, springrazors, rewire tools, ammo upgrades: they're effectively useless when your goal is to evade detection. The High Chaos endings, with the redesigned final level, are also delightfully grim, and there just isn't the same motivation to replay a game after you've already earned the "good" ending. Playing on Hard, the best encounters are the ones where the enemies are dead before they even know what hit them. Blink around: disable an alarm, repurpose a forcefield, choke a guard out and leave a springrazor prize prize for whoever comes to wake him up -- suddenly, you're the only guy in the room who's more than a glittering coinpurse beside a drift of ashes. -Autistic Angel

I had a friend ask me this exact question on Christmas day. It took me about .5 seconds to recommend Dishonored. What an insanely awesome game.

I'm hoping Dishonored goes on 50% sale at Greenman before the end of the winter sale, because I'll be able to get it for about $5 with the coupon and my credit. Far Cry 3 I'll have to find a different deal on.

How's dishonored on the 360? I've heard that it's best on the PC...but I'd rather play on the console...
Oh and does the pc version support 360 controller?

Played both. Both great games. You can't lose.
Just decide if you would rather run and gun or sneak and spring.
Or, exactly what Autistic Angel said.

Look on the Steam listings for controller support. Pretty much any AAA title these days (and most indie games that also appear on the consoles) support the XBOX controller, complete with correct button prompts on screen.

IMHO, dishonored is far too easy a game if you don't set yourself the goal(s) of not being detected and/or not killing anyone. Might want to keep that in mind if you were hoping to use all the gadgets and powers proffered as choices in the game.

have both, enjoy both. but kept going back to Dishonored. just finished my first playthrough as a clean hands no-kill stealth. it was soo much fun. xbox controller works really well. the game seamlessly switches from keyboard to controller with appropriate on screen markers and vice versa for whichever was detected as input last. can't recommend Dishonored enough. but you have to enjoy stealth games and have the discipline to play it as stealth or in my opinion it would not be nearly as much fun.

I realize this is a little late but I pre ordered and played Dishonored when I worked for gamestop. The game was amazing though with how I play it was honestly impossible for me to sneak past more than 2 guards in any level. And trust me I tried. I however did not play Far Cry 3 so I wont bad mouth it but Dishonored was amazing, and does have some replay value in my opinion.
