Playstation 1 controller on playstation 2. Will it work?

Quick Playstation 2 question.

Can you play playstation 2 games on a playstation 2 with a playstation 1 dual shock controller?

The reason why I'm asking is I'm getting my son a ps2 for his birthday and I just need to know if I need to buy an extra controller for two player games or will the half a dozen ps one controllers work fine?

They use the same connections so you should be able to use a ps1 controller on it. I haven't seen the ps1 controller in ages though don't remember if the ps2 version added anything new to it that might warrant you being better off with it.

I believe the only difference is the analog buttons and I don't think many games take advantage of that feature.

While the functionality and design is identical (at least once the PS1 added analog sticks), a quick test using my PSOne controller on my PS2 did not work.

It depends on the game.  I use my PS1 controllers all the time for both PS1 and PS2 games.  Some of the games I have do complain about the PS1 controller because it lacks analog button support, and the system knows this.  You should be able to plug in the controller and use it to navigate the memory card screen though without issue.

I've never had any problems so far playing any game (PS1 or 2) on my PS2 with my old PS1 controller.  Actually, I preferred playing several games with the old controller since I didn't care for the analog buttons on the PS2 controller.  Gran Turismo 3 in particular was never comfortable for me with analog buttons, so I just learned to play it with the old controller.

However, controllers with full motion range analog paddles on the Cube and X-Box are great for analog button response.  I much prefer playing racing games on those controllers.

Rob, I really love the idea that warning came up with about donating to GT for a (more or less) PIFF...

If you have the time, like his b-day isn't tomorrow - I'd be glad to send you a 3rd person (not bizarre looking either, same shape and size), brand new analog controller, for whatever you'd like to donate to GT (every little bit helps, tho' I'd suggest a $5 minimum if you decide to do it.)  There's a thread by warning about it, in the trading forum - please email me and we'll go  from there and bump the post.

Yes, you can use it. In some games, some of the buttons dont work, but in others its fully functional. Do you have a PS1 controller with Analog? If so then it will work as I have just stated.

I have tested it myself.
