As excited as I am about multiple background downloading, I was really excited to see a boot to the dashboard feature.  I find I always like to see if there's something new online before starting in for the night's gaming and waiting for the game to load and live to recognize me is a mild hassle.  Not too annoying, but if I can be done with it?  Hooray.

Some of the differences:

Boot the 360 straight to your dashboard instead of automatically booting the game in the drive.

Concurrant/background downloads.  No longer will you need to sit in the download screen watching that demo download.  Kick it off and then go play.

DVD playback supposedly has been improved as well.

nice about the DVD,as mine jutters on menus and scrolling credits,....cant be arsed sending it in...i hope this fixes it

as for all the other stuff.....i just hope it isnt gonna take all day to get it done......do you think xbox live will be down for a long time or will it just be a download(proberbly a biiiiig on) when you next sign in?

Background downloading is great.  That was my only complaint about the dashboard.

That's awesome.  The one thing I would have liked to see is instead of picking ahead of time if you boot to the dashboard or disc if you could do it simply by hitting a button during the boot.  Not a big deal though.

edit : Here's some other nice features (from Gamespot) :

-Many of the changes focus on making things easier to find when navigating the "blades" interface or downloading content on Xbox Live Marketplace. A new Media and Entertainment category has been added to the Marketplace menu, which features options to search for movie trailers and short films, television promos, music videos, and others instead of lumping them all together.

-game demos can be searched by genre, themes and gamer pictures have their own section, and game videos (that is, trailers) have been properly separated from movie trailers.

-When a download is complete, the content can be immediately accessed or applied. Just downloaded a trailer for BioShock? No need to navigate back through the menus like before--just select "play" when the notification comes up. Themes can also be instantly applied, rather than sifting through one's personal settings.

-Other updates to the various media functions of the 360 include fast forward or rewind capabilities (up to 16x speed) in Marketplace videos, improved data retrieval for names of CDs and individual tracks, and the ability to resume playback on a DVD from where it was last stopped.

-The system's online functions will also have a few extras, as well. Now when a gamer is idle, it will say so on players' friends lists. There will also be an option to have separate gamer pics for friends and the general public.

-Though the update sounds like it will take up a large chunk of space, it doesn't require a single byte on the hard drive.

That's what I thought, too, but I keep hearing Friday all over the place by people who talked to people who would "supposedly know."

A month or two ago i heard it was the end of may...now thats come and gone,and if you have seen the video from IGN(i think)they say they will have another main update in the fall(autumn god damn it,LOL)

looks like there's no official release date.  when i first heard about the update, it was stated that this friday was the release as if it were set in stone.  but since i can't find anything from microsoft stating even a time frame, i'm guessing it's still going to be a little while.

It was listed (last week) as scheduled for spring 2006, which means they have another 3 weeks to release it.

I'm betting it will come in the next two weeks.

The update in the fall speaks to the new camera and added functionality; I'm thinking september, and the next one will be feb for the Vista interconnectivity.

anyone know what the "persistant music playback" feature is in this update?  i read a forum post with someone crowing about it and its upcoming release in this update, but i have no idea what it is.

From what I've read and seen, the persistant music feature means that when you start a song/album in the dashboard, it will travel with you through all functionality, including games.  The only time the music will pause is during in-game cut-scenes.  Apparently before, if you were in the dash and started a game, your custom music would cut out.
