Anyone else just hyped up beyond belief for Persona 3?  I've been hyped for, oh half a year now.  I'm going to blatantly steal Error's topic thread of NeoGAF since he has a wonderful highlight of how the game is played - I would suggest going there to view some good info:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7070431&postcount=1

The Double Jump guide is already released and it's just as good as Nocturne's guide - very comprehensive, informative & pretty.

Who else is picking it up?

Persona 3???

I've never even heard of Persona 1 or 2.

They were on Playstation 1.  Person 2, in particular, was a very rare (and sought after), expensive game until it received a limited re-release a few years ago.

Something tells me it might not be your cup o' tea denoginizer.  smile

I'm interested, but have had a really hard time getting into any of the Shin Megami Tensai games.  I always enjoy the artwork, style, and story, but for some reason the battle systems have really rubbed me the wrong way.  Doesn't look like this one is much different, so I'll regrettably be giving it a pass.  Besides, I've got my fair share of quirk with Odin Sphere arriving this week.

As much as I love the SMT series, and the new art style for this game, I'm going to have to pass.  The game looks really interesting, but the image of teenagers blowing their brains out in battle is just too disturbing to me.  I know they were going for dark and edgy, but that's just not something I want to see over and over again  icon_frown

I asked their PR flak about that when they first started putting out information.  He claimed it was all very stylized and philosophical.  I asked if they were worried about any potential backlash and he said no, their fans would get it.

I worry that we'll have to put up with Jack Thompson decrying the game after every teenage suicide.  Just insert 'suicide trainer' into your vocabulary now.

I haven't looked too deeply into it, but it looks like you access magic, power and secret knowledge through ritual suicide actions.  That symbolism is wrong in so many ways.  Of course, I thought the Manhunt series was just wrong as well.  Perhaps I've lost any 'edge' I had since I became a parent.

The game is too small to generate any controversy.  Even Rule of Rose, with its sexualized children (from what I read, I've never played it) didn't make a blip on the radar.

The characters use gun-like things called Evokers to summon their persona into battle by shooting it at their heads.  They're not really hurting themselves, but the imagery is close enough for me to not want to see it, especially since they do this several times per battle.

I found this play test article via Wikipedia's entry for Persona 3.  It's sort of a mini-review, talking about the sorts of decisions you make in the game, the way things are paced, and some of the overall pros and cons.  It all pertains to the Japanese version...I don't know if any enhancements have been made for the American release (like the ones done for Rogue Galaxy, for example).

Reading about this game reminds me of the first time I heard of Harvest Moon.  "Wait...this game has you doing what??"

I loved the first Persona, I have the second one sitting on my shelf, I am interested in this, but really can't afford to put anymore RPGs on the shelf. I will get it before it goes into extinction like I have done with many Atlus titles.

It was released in Japan last July, and was announced for US release late last year, IIRC.
