The Penny Arcade series of RPGs made waves with fans when the game shipped in 2008 and 2009. Despite only six months between games the final episode never materialized at PAX 2010 the Penny Arcade fellows confirmed that Episode had been cancelled. This doesn’t seem to be the case anymore as they have announced Penn Arcade on the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode 3 for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Rain Slick episode 3 is being developed by Zeboyd games, the developers behind the excellent Breath of Death 7 and Cathulu Saves the World. Reportedly the game will take the form of a traditional 16 bit RPG similar to those that were popularized by the Super Nintendo in the 1990s.

"We originally had the idea of an NES-style RPG last year, but we couldn't find the right people to do it, After we saw Zeboyd's Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World, we knew we didn't have to look around anymore. Zeboyd was a perfect match."

I'm not sure why they didn't just call this something new, when it is a different style of game from a different developer.

I'm presuming because it finishes the story line from parts 1 and 2.

Joystiq has a preview and screenshots.  The game looks a lot like Zeboyd's earlier games, Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves The World.  The best news is that it will use the battle system from Grandia, one of the best RPG battle systems ever smile

I thought they were going to finish it in comic form a while back - I take it that never happened?

I'm not sure about the XBox version, but the game is out on Steam now.  Also, RPGamer gives it 4/5 in their review.

Penny Arcade is giving out free Steam codes for the game today (5/20) in order to celebrate the coming release of PA4 (first week of June).

Thanks for the tip Eddie.  Strangely the first Steam code they gave me had been already used by someone else.  Not sure what was up with that, but the second one I got from the website worked.
