Saw this in the Console Forums and wanted to have a PC only topic. Hope there's not one already. Any way, without further adieu...
World of Warcraft for me. I'm just loving this game on so many levels. Maybe it helps that I was a WC3 junkie, but man have I been hooked on this game. I look forward to playing every day.

It comes down to Half Life 2 vs. Far Cry for me. And it is a tough choice.
I honestly think that Far Cry looked better (at least in terms of shadows) but HL2 just pulled me in night after night.
I think I will have to go with Half Life 2.

Of all the games I played, I have to go with Half Life 2. It was super fun the first time through and I enjoyed it enough to go through and play it a second time as soon as I finished it. I enjoyed the second time through just as much.

it comes down to a match-up between Unreal Tournament 2004 and Half-Life 2 for me. both a great games, and HL2 is definitely my single-player game of the year. i have to give overall GOTY rights to UT2K4 in the end though. no other game this year has sucked me in for the hours of blissful carnage that i've experience with UT...and i still have every bit as much fun as the day i first played the pre-release demo

It's the Romans vs. Gordan Freeman for me. Maybe I'll take a sebbatical over the holiday and reevaluate the two contenders. s

Half-Life 2 for me so far as well, although I haven't played many games this year. I guess my runner-up would be Warhammer.

Tough one. Can't we have Games of the Year, or maybe just one GOTY for every year's worth of quality titles we got this year (which would come out to about 5 for me)?
World of Warcraft, HL2, Far Cry, and Rome are all struggling to be my GOTY. Been addicted to WoW, but just reinstalled Far Cry last night, and getting the urge to play HL2 again.

PC Only:
Half Life 2 Thief 3 Far Cry
I've played only a little bit of single player Tribes: Vengeance but stopped due to some sound issues. Based on what I played it would probably deserve a spot here too.
Haven't played Rome or Pirates! yet (both are on the Christmas List). I personally found it a very disappointing year for PC games outside of the games on this last with HL2 and T3 being two of my favorite games in years.

I haven't yet played Half-Life 2, so my choice has to be Rome: Total War. I'll soon have a go at Half-Life but I think Rome will still win out if only for the difference in longevity.
If I hadn't already played Riddick on the XBox, I'd be playing the PC version now and it might beat out everything. I loved it. My brother-in-law, a hard-core FPS gamer, is now playing Riddick and he says he's enjoying it even more than Half-Life 2. He's so particular about his games, I trust his opinion. Granted, he's only about a third of the way through but that early review paints a telling picture. Riddick is addictive, fun, and totally absorbing. It's real pretty too.
But I have to vote on PC games I've played, so Rome TW gets my vote.

Since everyone did multiple, I'll add to my original post the other games that I really liked this year:
Warhammer 40K DOW - lot's of fun, love the hectic battles. Wish the campaign was longer.
Tribes - Vengeance - I had such a blast playing this one, but the community must not have. It was damn impossible to find people on a server. I'd stayed away from Tribes 2 and dropped out of the scene for awhile, but this one was as much fun as T1 was for me.
The ones that need to be commented on:
Doom 3 - I really liked the atmosphere on this one. The graphics are damn near amazing. The pop out of the closet thing turned me off. I like how dark it was though, I thought it was fitting.
HL2 - Very nice looking game, sure the physics are neat, but it didn't do it for me like HL1 did.

Half-Life 2, based on what I call the "A+ test" -- ask the question, "what could they have done to make it better?" of every game, and the one with the shortest list wins.

CoH... man am I loving that game.... wow (no pun intended)
I would have to go wtih HL 2 as well... Far Cry would be a close second but HL 2 has so much more production value, polish, and just so many "ohmygoddidyouseethat???!!!' moments that it has to win.
Now, if you take Far Cry, and build it with the HL 2 engine and put the same amount of money into it.. well, wow...

It's gotta be Half-Life 2. It's the 2nd best gaming experience of my life, after Ultima IV on my Apple II. Ultima introduced me to a living, breathing virtual world and kept me entranced for a month. Half-Life 2 is the first game since then to pull me in to an alternate reality with such conviction. Lot's of games have come close, but not nearly as consistently. Half-Life 2 is just so polished and feels just right. I'm only half way through because I stopped playing so I could upgrade my PC before finishing. I want to see the end of this bad boy in all its high-res antialiased anisotropic filtered pixel-shaded glory

Can someone suggest a site where I can see all the games that have come out this year? As it stands, my best game so far is Dawn of War but I'm playing it currently, so it might be because of my recent impressions, and I might be missing some other important game that I played in the beginning of the year.

Halflife 2 here also. I still have not finished it but it is clear that it is the best I have played this year. Honorable mentions to: Far cry was very nice until the evil monkeys made me scream in frustration when they repeatedly tore me to pieces... Thief 3 was well polished and nice but did not have the soul. Sims 2 is fun but no game of the year.

Half-Life 2. The best game I've played on any platform that came out in the past year. Riddick I have on X-Box but I'm waiting for my new TV to get in today so I can play it HD and widescreen.

HL2 for me.
I've been pretty heavy into the consoles, so I've not played a ton of PC games.
LOTR:BFME deserves mention; it's what I play right now when I'm in front of the PC. I haven't decided to play WoW yet; I think I'll hold off until January. I think I might give DoW a spin too; I was in the multiplayer beta and it looked pretty promising.

Phew - it's a tossup...
Vampire Bloodlines Far Cry EQ2
I just don't know about HL2, after being excited about it for ages I got bored after about 4 hours and have not played it since. Very frustrating cause I know I should love it.
