I need a new RPG to play, and haven't really played anything the past year.  I tried Jade Empire, and found it to be pretty bad unfortunately.  I have all the major systems, and the portables (except the DS).  I'm hopeful that a really good tactical RPG was released.  I never played Disgaea, so I'm tempted to try and find that if its the best tactical RPG on the PS2?

Anyway, what's out that's been good?

Disgaea, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom.

Stella Deus

Shin Megami Tenshi Nocturne, Shin Megami Tenshi Digital Devil Saga

Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana

For Action RPGs there's X-Men Legends and Bard's Tale.

Which of these are better?  I know a bit about Disgaea, but not the others.  Do they all look and play fairly similar?

I'd recommend Disgaea, simply because I greatly prefer a standard grid system.  Makai Kingdom is more refined I guess, but man, I just want to have a grid again.

Disgaea is easily the most acclaimed of the bunch but it also the most expensive and hardest to find.

Many were disappointed in Phantom Brave so Makai Kingdom is getting a much better reaction and is probably second to Disgaea in terms of praise.  Easy to find since its new but you'll pay full price.

LaPucelle is probably the least acclaimed of the lot but it's also first so the play mechanics are supposed to be much easier to get accustomed to.  And it's not hard to find and can be had used for under $20.

Stay away from Makai Kingdom and Phantom Brave.  I swear, the sphere system is absolutely atrocious.  It's horribly unintuitive and I don't think anyone was getting tired of the perfection that is the grid system.  RENT one of those games and see if you dig the sphere system.

Disgaea seems to be the favorite on the PS2, but I couldn't get into it.  I did, however, enjoy Nippon Ichi's earlier game La Pucelle.  So if you don't wanna shell out the $$$ for Disgaea, La Pucelle can be found on the cheap.

And man, after going through a 15-hour blitz of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, I can say that it's one of the best.  Grab that, but keep the kleenix handy because if a unit dies, that unit's gooooooone forever.
