My backlog (on XBOX) is not horrendous, but it is long (for me):

• Jet Set Radio Future (5/Dec/02)
• Panzer Dragoon Orta (Apr 03)
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds (30/Nov/03)
• Otogi: Myth of Demons (18/dec/03)
• Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge (Summer 04)
• Metal Arms Glitch in the System: (September 04)
• Fable (November 04)
• Mercenaries (January 05)

I acquired quite a PC backlog (probably X2 the above) just before getting my XBOX. So many legendary titles left unplayed....

How do you justify buying new games when you've got some great titles just waiting for you to play them sitting on your shelf.

For me it's all about mood.  I don't care how great a game is (or book or DVD for that matter), if it's not the genre/story/gameplay that I'm really looking for at that moment then I'm not going to be able to get into it.

In the past I've justified buying new games by:
1. finding really good sales which weren't likely to be repeated.  When I was 3 hours into Baldur's Gate, Best Buy had BG2 on sale for $19.99.  How could I refuse?  I knew I'd play it someday, so now I have a nice, unopened big box copy of Baldur's Gate 2 just waiting for the day when I get around to finishing BG1.

2.  finding games which are scarce or which will become so.  No, I don't need any more Playstation games...but I still scan EB's used game section for a gem I might not have

3.  cheapassgamer.com.  Yes, I have too many unplayed games...but look at this deal!

Now I'm trying to thin down the backlog by selling the games I'll never get around to playing.  Just say no to new games!

I feel really bad when I buy new games.  There's no way to justify this, except I know I'll get to them.  Eventually.  Sometimes.

When you decide to play multiplayer Crimson you let me know, I'll climb behind the controls of the Bulldog.

Umm, how long have I been asking for multiplayer CSX nights??

Oh, and I don't know what to tell you about backlog guilt. It got so bad yesterday I had to shut down the game I was playing (Homeworld 2 for the second or third time) and tell myself "no more replaying games until you finish new ones"

Don't even make me post my list ATB!

I finally cut myself off of buying new games until I finish my backlog.  It was hard at first but now I'm hooked on the rush of finishing games.  In the past two months I've completed:

  • Brothers in Arms
  • Chronicles of Riddick
  • Metal Arms
  • Oddworld: Stranger
To go:
  • Full Spectrum Warrior
  • Jade Empire (might just trade it as I can't get in to it)
  • Mercenaries
  • Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (currently playing)
  • KOTOR II
Sure there're plenty I'd love to pick up, but I just know if I do I'll break my streak and fall back in to the slump.  It's hard not to pick up Psychonauts, Rebel Commando and especially R6:Lockdown when it comes out.  But I really want to clear out my list before the 360 comes out because I probably won't be able to go back to these primitive titles afterwards. smile

I only buy a game for two reasons now-

1. If it's a KILLER deal
2. I'm going to start playing it right away.

The backlog is so big that #2 doesnt come up very often anymore.

Oh, yeah, right you are!  But in the meantime, I'm playing (still, yeah!) XBox Silent Hill the Room - and, of all things - XBox Return to Castle Wolfenstein!  I'm enjoying both immensely, just taking too long because I spend too much time here (part of the CG effect!)  I still have Kotor II and Jade Empire to go, at a minimum - I suspect all backlogged PS1 and Dreamcast games will just have to be filled in any tiny spaces that appear in the future.

But it all stops, regardless of what's been started or finished when ES Oblivion comes out... you may not even see me much here then either!    With luck, it'll be Addiction City, baby!  Tongue

When you go for kotor2, check out the faq I posted here for workbench items.  It's better than the one on GameFAQs, and last I checked mine was complete and theirs wasnt.

Didn't you make this in Excel format or something more readable as well?  If so I'd like to try and get a copy of that from you.

Yeah, let me check if I still have the spreadsheet.

As an alternative, I always make my FAQS openable with Excel; just save it, and change the .txt suffix to a .cvs

Cool.  I've not tried doing that.  If you can't find it I'll try and remember where your FAQ was originally posted and give that method a shot.

Thanks.
