Oh well, I have just ordered a Wii.  It's not that it's so expensive, it's just that I generally object to spending money.

I had the whole order in my cart, and was staring at the ~$500, wondering if I wanted to spend that.  And, of course, the gaming backlog is asking me why on earth I need another console.

But, on the other hand, I'll be the coolest kid on my block!

So here is what I got:

  • Wii Console
  • Super Mario Wii
  • Zelda: Twilight Princess (of course)
  • Wii Points card (need to get Paper Mario from the VC)
  • Wii Play w/ Remote (the extra $10 gets you another game)
  • Nintendo Classic controller (is this worth getting?)
  • Nunchuck

That should do for now.  Also, I can start working my way through my GC backlog.

Nintendo Classic controller (is this worth getting?)

If you intend to play any of the older games (and don't own a Gamecube/Wavebird controller), yes, it's definitely worth getting. Personally, I think the NCC has a better d-pad than the GC does (and it's wireless with the nunchuck in it), so it's definitely worth it.

And I'm amazed you found it for purchase online (and didn't overcharge you by too much in the process).

actually I would've passed on the Wii Points card, you can buy points through the shop channel, and oddly enough Nintendo has yet to charge me sales tax when I buy the points, so you technically save some money that way.

Where'd you order that?

Circuit City.  Sorry, I should have mentioned that.  If you hurry, hopefully they still have some.

It won't let you order the console unless it's bundled, however.

Oh, I was in the process of ordering and adding things to my order when it went to "sold out".  I was pissed!

when Amazon had Wii's available I didn't waste time ordering anything else with it.  I placed my order right away and then took my time getting accessories together with a second order.

I actually got super lucky.  I went and got a haircut and lunch while it was in my cart (I was really delaying the spending of the monies).  I figured if it was still for sale by the time I got back, it was meant to be.

The short, short version - if your TV supports Progressive Scan (480p), YES!

Honestly, even if it doesn't support prog. scan, if it has component connections you will see a marked improvement over the standard video cable.

the wavebird/NGC controller is still required for GC games... the only place they're interchangable is the VC titles, IIRC.

what D said.  I got my component cables a day after I got my Wii, and there was a noticable difference.

I'll be playing on my monitor, so I'll get them.  I've noticed my PS2 looks better with them, so I'll have to pick them up.

I noticed Nintendo doesn't sell them from their web site any longer.  Damn, I knew I should have bought them in anticipation of my Wii purchase.

[edit] BTW, I'm kind of surprised that most of my order already arrived, but it's anticlimactic because the console itself has not.

Blah, I guess I can read the game instructions...

The heck? Is there just no entry for them at all, or are they out of stock?

I thought some 3rd party company made a set, but I'm not sure without poking around (and I'm at work).

Unlike the cube cables, the official Nintendo Wii component cables are sold in stores. I see them in Best Buy all the time.

I'm surprised. I've never seen them in EB or the like. Maybe it's just a big chain thing.

My local EB seems to have a hard time getting alot of the Wii accessories in stock.  I just went ahead and got mine from Amazon.

That's crazy, I -just- looked Friday, and the page never ended up resolving, even after a search.  I assumed they stopped selling them from the site.

Anyway, I ordered them from Amazon.  Free shipping FTW.

Of course it is...

1st party cable - power cord
2nd party cable - Wii sensor bar
3rd party cable - A/V cable

I'm thinking the WiiChuck would be 4,5,6 and 7th party cables respectively.

Now Wii go party!

Yeah, it is. Amazon also had a Madcatz cable for a little more. Gamestop is selling the Nintendo one for $29. I don't really think it matters and for 9 bucks, i took the risk slywink

Yno what? The Nintendo one isn't like it's a high-grade cable anyways.

I ordered the Nintendo one, but in retrospect the Mad Catz one looked like a higher quality cable.  I feel like such a label whore.

Cool, the Wii arrived!

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!

I just remembered, I should have gotten the recharger for the controllers.  Anyone have one?  Do you like it?  I have rechargeable batteries, so maybe I don't really need it...

That's the one thing I don't have. The batteries will last for a while anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about it (unless you play like an absolute madman). Just keep in mind that unlike the 360 and PS3, there's no way to recharge the batteries while still playing.

Ok, inputting text is a complete and total pain in the ass, as is selecting buttons and other things.  Why couldn't they have added in either a "snap to button" feature, or let you control it with the buttons?

I don't think there is.  It's just something you get used to.

ps.  if you liked the movie get Godfather: Blackhand Edition.  It's stolen me away from my 360 for the last month.

The batteries always seemed to run out for me non-stop.  I got the charger and LOVE it.  Highly recommend.  I just wish they sold the battery packs by themselves so I could switch out the other two I have without getting another charging station.
