Portable is debatable. I don't consider it that portable with the portability is the range of my home network.

for me the qualification for 'portable' is simple: can I take it into the crapper with me?  is so, then it's portable.  I miss my old apartment where I could sit on the toilet with the door open and be able to play on the big screen though...

let me be the first to thank god for this on the eve of the Kinect 2...

New keyboard, you owe me.

sorry, didn't mean to get you excited.

I clicked, and was disappointed.

I thought this was a classy way of talking:

And I echo the writers sentiments - winning isn't everything - competing to give the market the best advantage is.

Guys, I realize you'll be busy with your Killzones and your Battlefields on the 15th, but check out this little clip for Super Motherload. It looks pretty cool, and the soundtrack is probably going to rival Hotline Miami for my favorite. I love Sony's indie support, just wish more of the games they mentioned were day 1 releases.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/11/playstation-4-details/

Quote
#1 - Party Chat works across entire system and all apps, 8 people per lobby, but you can make MORE THAN ONE LOBBY!

#2 – Broadcasting is fast and easy, with “adorable PlayStation-themed standby screen”. Standby screen is activated on screen whenever you switch from game to PS4 OS. During OS browsing, “On Air” indicator is present on the screen.

#3 – Double-tap PSButton to multitask to any app that was last active. Single press gets you back to the OS.

#4 – Play as a guest on another console does not carry on all system settings like on Xbone, but when you log out from guest console, all personal data (credit card info)is permanently deleted from that console.

#5 – Trophy screen shows PS4/PS3/Vita data, but now each trophy shows how rare it is (how many people managed to unlock them)

#6 – “The PlayStation Store is actually organized”

#7 - You can power USB devices while the console is off

I'm a bit of a trophy whore, so this really pleases me. Achievements on Steam haven't really been handled right in my opinion, but at least they do one thing right: They show the percentage of players who obtained a particular achievement, just like what is described in that quote above. Getting a trophy and knowing that less than 1% of all players have it makes it feel all that much more special, and it really devalues useless trophies. Playing through the entirety of Doom 2 in the Doom 3 BFG Edition on Ultra Violence was oh so much more rewarding when I got an achievement for it that still says that only 0.92% of players have it. smile

It works, but not perfectly and not with everything. In addition, it needs to be cabled to work. You're going to need to keep that DS3.

Is it ironic that they mention they are playing at 720p?  They do say they like the look of it.

Ohh edited to add they do mention it can do 1080p as well.

It probably won't. The Sony representative who talked about this was very evasive. It might work if you can achieve high bandwidth and low ping between your PS4 and the Vita, but there's no guarantee. We don't know the exact requirements. There's nothing blocking you from using it over the internet except for that.

On the other hand, next year will mean the launch of their Gaikai services, which should probably fix that issue completely. They haven't spoken much about it yet though.

Giantbomb will be capturing all games at 720p for now, regardless of whether they support 1080p or not.   Has to do with their player, bitrates, etc.

Ohh edited to add they do mention it can do 1080p as well.

It's confirmed as 1080p and locked at 60 fps. Nothing to worry about. smile

I was just being snarky about it looking good in 720p, happy to see it is a free PS+ game.  Might not try it otherwise, a bit too twitch response type of game for my old eyes.

Remote play looks incredible!!

It really makes the Vita a portable PS4.

Portable is debatable. I don't consider it that portable with the portability is the range of my home network.
For me, portable means can I play it without needing to use the TV because my wife is busy using it?

Can we just compare the first unofficial unboxings here? For the Xbone, a guy is lucky enough to get his early and makes an unboxing video which is then removed because MS complains that an unboxing somehow violates copyright and then his console is banned (temporarily but they didn't feel the need to make that clear right from the start). Sony on the other hand gives a console to one of the most watched video game YouTubers on the internet and allows him to make an unboxing for it which is then seen by hundreds of thousands (almost a million) of gamers, increasing the sense of goodwill towards Sony.
Just who is running the PR department over at MS?

Looks like some games will use the remote play for local multiplayer.  Rivals seems to support this with the TV and the Vita being different players.

I'm going with Microsoft has a timeline planned out and Target hosed them with this mistake.  MS did not want that info out and had only one way to stop it, banning the console (until system released) and pulling the youtube video.  I don't think it is right for youtube to pull the video but MS did offer the guy some perks for his troubles, maybe MS PR could be more vocal about what they did for the guy.

Sony gave that console to someone they picked out, MS had no control over where Target sent the XB1.  Seems a big difference to me, MS is sending XB1's to journalists as well but they have yet to lift the NDA, to my knowledge Sony isn't sending random people PS4's.  I'll never understand the appeal of unboxing videos for any product.

MS had an unlucky break but they still need to deal with it properly. Also, nothing is stopping them from sending units to influential members of the gaming community (not video game sites) to strum up support. That was sort of my point when comparing the two PRs.

This is looking really tempting.  I'm kind of shocked that Sony isn't offering a PS4 + Vita bundle, but with the Radio Shack sale, a $560 PS4 + Vita is pretty interesting comparison to a $500 Xbone + Kinect.

You know what, there's no way Sony doesn't do a PS4 + Vita bundle when the initial console rush quiets down.  If I can manage to fight off temptation until that happens, I think that'll be the time for me to buy.

Oh I'm sure it will happen eventually. But not until the rush dies down. There's  no need for the moment. They'll probably wait until MS drops the price of the Xbox to 399 and then say "we have a PS4/Vita bundle for $399!

It would be nice if they even offered a decent VITA bundle.

#4 – Play as a guest on another console does not carry on all system settings like on Xbone, but when you log out from guest console, all personal data (credit card info)is permanently deleted from that console.

How often do you make purchases on other peoples' consoles? Also, does this also remove it from the list the hackers got? slywink

Emphasis mine (above)

PR stunt vs shipping error - and MS's launch is still 10 days away.

You'll note that the dude never ever shows the PS4 on, other than the light (this is before the UI was revealed) - there is clearly rules he's following with them. #otherdude was running all over MS's backyard with info they'd not revealed yet - and when he was caught there, he was gracious etc - and they simply kept him from going online with it (yet). I don't see this as condemnable behavior. In fact, the PR stunt from Sony seems par for the course on their PR strategy (try and make competition look worse rather than trying to make product look better).

I'm not condemning them for it either - but it's funny that the unboxing happened right after the shipping fiasco hit the fan.

I'm surprised more stores haven't put more together on their own.

Same here. I do think they will be heavily pushing the Vita with the PS4 launch. Though it is in no way required to enjoy the PS4, it gives a huge added feature to it and should result in a fairly large bump in sales for the Vita.
