Operation Flashpoint was my first real experience with online gaming in an FPS with a huge map.  I still remember being amazed that I could take a helicopter and just fly around for long stretches of time, then set off to find a battle.

I also remember with great fondness sneaking through the woods in the SP portion of the game, praying that no one would see me.

OP had such great atmosphere.  I hope they recapture it with this sequel.

I have the game and all the expansions for PC, but when I loaded it up and started playing it I had absolutely no idea what was going on smile

I'm kind of used to tutorials.

Exactly how I felt about the original too.  They nailed the atmosphere, including the sense of total chaos and confusion.  It was not a forgiving experience if you tried to run and gun, or were used to having perma-shields with regenerating health.  I also remember fondly the nerve wracking runs through the woods trying to out maneuver baddies, hoping that I was navigating correctly and that i would pop out near the objective.

As someone who lived this profession for awhile, Operation Flashpoint was the game that got it pretty close to right imo...particularly the mixed emotions and sensations of frustration, fear, anxiety, thrill, excitement and total chaos.  The graphics were not that great, even for when it was released, and there were plenty of bugs.  Plus it had an unforgiving learning curve.  Some of it was of course over the top and silly (like the vehicle use), but overall it was a a good spec ops infantry simulator.

Most of the actual games dubbed as infantry simulators or realistic squad based infantry experiences have not been as effective imho.  The next closest would be the CoDs I guess, but those can be goofy too...but they're fun icon_smile

Bohemia isn't happy about them labelling this as a sequel.  doesn't sound like they'll be doing anything that could delay the game though.

My favorite crack me up moment in Operation Flashpoint was watching two friends of mine try to play co-op.

Friend 1: I think there's an MG nest up ahead.
Friend 2: where?

No, OFP2 is a codemasters game based on their own engine. ArmaA and ArmA2 are both games made by, BIS, the makers of OFP, using modified version of the same engine.

I hope ArmA2 is as good as OFP was back in the day, but I fear it will be crappy.

OFP2 could be good as well, as it will finally be competition for BIS to make a game without bugs and stupid control decisions.

That pretty much describes the original Operation Flashpoint.  Roll Eyes I loved the game (enough to import it via GoGamer cause I was so impatient for a US release), but I remember dying early, often, and frequently. I really enjoyed it in co-op but mostly I and my squaddies just died a lot. I'll blame it on dialup.  icon_razz

It still feels wrong to me that Bohemia Interactive isn't involved with it, but with the Batman demo being so promising by a UK dev, maybe the same will hold true with this.  icon_smile

Yeah, when I read reviews like this:
http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=65208
Quote
In previous games of the series, you felt like a soldier playing his part in a larger conflict where squadmates occasionally die,  but in Arma II, you mostly just feel like you are stuck with three other squadmates who you must babysit while you're all being carted around by suicidal helicopter pilots.  It just doesn't feel like the gritty style of gameplay that the series is known for and feels more like a failed experiment in trying something different.
It does make me think giving the OFP2 keys to someone else is smart.

And things change. For all I know, the Bohemia Interactive devs that made OFP one of my favorite games may have mostly moved on and perhaps BI's current dev team doesn't have much in common with that one.

I personally see Arma2 is being the true continuation of the original OpFP. Past the engine, very little has changed at it's core...but the campaign, though technically better in several ways, just doesn't have the 'grand' feeling of OpFP, or even ArmA1. I think they really missed the mark here...it could have been so, so much better.

Now, I do like what I'm seeing out of Dragon Rising...it doesn't look like it will be anything like the original, but it does look like it's going to be a fresh take and perhaps better. From the gameplay I've seen, it looks like they've taken the hardcore firefights from OpFP/Arma and melded it with a squad command structure similar to the Brothers in Arms series. There's been nothing to show the ultra-wide range of control options of the older games, nor the large squad action...everything I've seen shows just a handful of squadmates. In some ways it's disappointing, as I really like having all the command options and have a good grasp on them from playing the series for so long...but, if the AI can operate intelligently without a ton of handholding but still give me enough commands to get them to perform what I want, I'll be pleased.

My pre-release pluses:
The new engine looks fabulous.
The new command options look quick and easy to use.
It's Operation Flashpoint!

My pre-release concerns:
Small squads?
The new command options look to be a bit sparse.
Not as tactical in nature because it suffers from Consolitis. I hate the term too, as I love my 360 too...but it may fit in comparison to the original.

Anyways...unless I see something that really turns me off in the next months, I'll be picking it up.

If they're going with smaller squads than the larger units you could have in original OFP, I figure that probably has something to do with wanting to be "console friendly." And I don't mean it in a derogatory way, just that they may feel smaller squads works better with a console controller as far as keeping track. The same way attempts at RTSs on consoles or multi-platform tend to use a different control scheme and focus than PC-native stuff.

from this 360 preview it doesn't sound like they dumbed it down too much.  I have a feeling it might not do too well on there because it'll be a bit too hardcore.

Blue's pointed out this Fragland.net interview (co-op, including on PC, is 5 players):
http://www.fragland.net/specials/Operation-Flashpoint-Dragon-Rising-interview/241/
Quote
- What kind of DLC plans do you have?
I can't give you too much detail but effectively we've got a lot of DLC-plans. The possibilities are almost endless. We can add new weapons, new vehicles and missions. We're looking at doing specific military force packs and proper full-on content expansions as well. So there's a lot of cool stuff coming your way.
I hope that includes on PC.

Quote
- Was it hard to bring the game to the console? Where or what features has been cut of because of the limitations of playing it on a console?
From day one we decided it had to work on consoles. It wasn’t just a port of the pc version, because it really had to work on consoles. We are using our in-house engine called Ego. You would’ve seen this engine most recently in DiRT and GRID. It’s a very powerful next-gen engine that has been in development for a number of years now. All three versions of the game were built at the same time basically. For an accessibility point of view it was just a case of making it a fun experience working with the controllers you have. We wanted to achieve pc-depth with console accessibility
As long as console players can divvy out orders with aplomb, I'm sure it'll do OK. If they simplify it too much, it's probably going to feel too much like a COD: MC wannabe, or various other more action-focused combat shooters.

I don't think the game has a 3rd person option like OFP did (judging from the videos to this point), so I may be out of luck with my increasingly bad motion sickness troubles in FPSs and certain kinds of 3rd person games. I might be doomed to MMORPGs for the rest of my life.  icon_razz

normal mode might have 3rd person (haven't read anything confirming or denying it though), but I doubt hardcore mode would have it.  ARMA 2 has 3rd person and I like turning it on for dricing in the demo.
