With the deals on the 4gb 360s coming in on black friday, I'm thinking this might be a good time to upgrade my current system. I've got a 120gb hard drive now. Has anyone had any hands on experience with yanking that one out of its case and using it in a slim? I know it's supposedly not a problem, but I'd love to hear a personal "I did that a year ago with no problems" story just to be sure before I drop the money on a slim.

Even if you don't yank it out, the HDD transfer kit actually allows you to use your old hard drive anyways. (It's ugly though)

I'd rather avoid spending any extra money, even the $20 on the transfer kit. I'm trying to be cheap!  |

My buddy ( Gotrek, a chronic lurker here) went through this. Step 1: Pull HDD out of old 360 top-load housing. Step 2: eyeball the port connection, and shove it in. Step 3: Profit! If you want it to fit better (since it will droop a bit) you could go with the 10 cent solution of padding it with paper, and even putting a tab of tape to allow you to remove the drive, or you could do the right thing and head over to DealExtreme for $4.50 and get a plastic enclosure. Heads up: they have pink for you. Edit: Of course, this is the same info Greggy_D just spit out. Took too long, getting you the link for the pink. |

if you're taking it out of an old 360 carriage, make sure you have a full set of hex screwdrivers. I just did this for a friend and we had to go to a hardware store after seeing what they used to screw the drives into the old carriages.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll be doing this. Hopefully Amazon will have the 4gb ones for around $150 on black friday. Then I can maybe hook the old one up to the computer monitor and just use it for system link co-op or something. Or maybe just sell it. |
