Has anyone else noticed that most games on that list are sequels?

Most? It seems they all are, save one. And yeah, 2004 rivals 1998 as the best year of gaming. I don't think it surpasses it, though. 1998 ReleasesHalf Life The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Fallout 2 Starcraft (and it's expansion) Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy IV Xenogears Baldur's GateSo what do you guys think? Has 2004 been better than 1998?

I still have a ton of games waiting and now I just have more....and Half-Life 2 is waiting for me next week. I am just hoping there is the typical winter lul in Feb, March, and April. I can catch up then.

Final Fantasy IV
FF4 was not released before Xenogears... FF4 was on the SNES, Xenogears was on the PS1... I'm assuming that's a typo?

So what do you guys think? Has 2004 been better than 1998? Console wise, yes. One could argue its the best gaming year for consoles ever. For computers I think pcs had a slightly better year in 1998 but 2004 isn't over yet.

I'm overloaded too. Not so much on the PC right now (Rome TW, Sims 2) but Half Life 2 is on the way, and possibly Vampires as well. Consoles is a different story. I'm playing through * Jak & Daxter * Sly Cooper * Ratchet & Clank (with Going Command and UYA on the way) * Champions of Norrath * Test Drive: Eve of Destruction * Outlaw Golf 2 * X-Men Legends * Halo 2 * Rallisport Challenge 2 and about 5 others I dabble with. so yep, I'm overloaded This is definitely one of the best gaming years ever. With Gran Turismo 4, KOTOR 2, HL2, and a few other biggies on the way... whoa nellie, what a year.

Argubaly, your #1 and #9 (Burnout 3 and Katamari Damacy) have not come out or are coming out in the last quarter. Both were released in September, which is part of the 3rd quarter of the year. Semantics, I know...however it's true.

I'm beyond swamped. It's ABSURD.
World of Warcraft might have to wait.
But all roads lead to Half-life 2 next week. Far and away the game I'm most looking forward to this year, and I imagine I'm not alone.

1998 would have been FF VIII, iirc.

1998 would have been FF VIII, iirc. Nah, I think the only FF in 1998 was Tactics. FF VIII was 1999 (came out the same day as Dreamcast's launch IIRC).

I would most definitely say this has been the best year for new game releases. (Console and PC combined; I play both and do not descriminate between the two.)
I am trying my best to not get into Everquest II before I play and finish Half-Life 2. I am enjoying Halo 2 (going to play it on legendary soon) both the singleplayer and multiplayer. I fiddled around with EQ II a little and now I am ready for some HL2!
Let's get it on!

I've been overloaded for the longest time and there doesn't seem to be any relief in sight. Right now I'm juggling : R&C:UYA, GTA:SA, Halo 2 and Shin Megami Tensei. I'll probably finish R&C, but I think the others are going to end up in the land of uncompleted limbo.
I'm going to be doubly swamped once HL2 and Vampire come out. So, after that I'll have two weeks before KOTOR 2 comes out? oh man, I'm in trouble.

Backlogged as well.
I'm playing Halo 2 and Men of Valor coop with a good friend. Also, I just started the new LOTR game but I'm not sure about it yet. On the PC I'm playing Medal of Honor Pacific Assault and Counterstrike: Source, while waiting on HL2 to come out.
I also have a campaign going on in Rome Total War that I Would like to finish.

The thing I can't get over is not only how incredibly packed this quarter's release schedule is, but there doesn't look to be any let up at the start of next year either. I mean in the first quarter of 2003 there were two big releases, Ninja Gaiden and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. Next year there is going to be at least ten.
Not only am I going to struggle to keep up with all of this month's releases like Halo 2, Jak 3, Prince of Persia, KotOR II, Growlanser: Generations, Baten Kaitos, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Metroid Prime 2, first quarter of next year looks almost as good:
Project Snowblind The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap Resident Evil IV Full Metal Alchemist Star Wars Republic Commando Xenosaga II Brothers In Arms Jade Empire Splinter Cell 3 Devil May Cry 3

Glad I'm not the only one who's worried. The following games are all ones that I want to get:
Halo 2 HL2 PoP:WW Metroid Prime 2
...and I just bought Tribes Vengeance and Warhammer 40K and need to finish Doom 3 still. This is insane!

Hi, all. First post from a GoneGold refugee.
Yes, I have to agree that this year -- specifically, the last few months -- are the best for gaming in recent memory.
It's a bit frustrating, 'cause there wasn't a darn thing to play all summer, and now that work is insanely busy I have no time for gaming.
On my now playing and wish lists -- all of which are recent and upcoming releases:
PC ----- - Rome: Total War (fantastic, but I put it aside until the patch) - Half-Life 2 (on my Christmas list -- will be very hard to wait) - Pacific Fighters (a bit buggy on release, but will eventually be great) - Vampire: Bloodlines (this looks interesting) - Sims 2 (my wife's been playing it, and I'll get around to it eventually) - Pirates! (I loved playing Pirates! on my C-64. I'm considering waiting for the X-box version of this, though)
X-Box -------- - Halo 2 (beat it over the weekend - loved it -- will be the game that finally motivates me to get Live) - Fable (finally got around to finishing it last week. Blah. Pretty disappointing.) - Burnout 3 (on My Christmas List. Burnout 2 was my favorite racer ever) - Jade Empire (looks good, except for the arcade mini-games) - KOTOR 2 (the first one was the best X-box RPG I've played, which may not be saying a whole lot but I thought it was great) - Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (I mostly watched my son play the first one, but I think I'll devote some of my own time to #2)
That's a heck of a lot of gaming ... I need to find a way to become independently wealthy in the next couple of weeks.
