I don't mean to brag, but I can drive the hell out of the cars in this game. I don't know if it's my previous Forza experience or what, but I feel completely at ease behind the wheel. Sorry for the haters, but I *love* the driving physics in this game.

My mom came over tonight, and says, "What are you playing?" I reply, "Grand Theft Auto 4." She immediately covers her eyes and screams, "Turn it off! Turn it off! Turn it off!" I reply, "Sorry mom, I can't, I'm right in the middle of something." Then I proceed to blow a pedestrian's brains out, and haul ass as other pedestrians are yelling, "What the FUCK you doing you FUCKING ASSHOLE!" My mom is literally covering her ears and eyes totally freaking out. It was awesome. I then proceeded to get lectured for ten minutes on why I shouldn't be playing "that horrible garbage." (Keep in mind I'm 33 years old!) Ah well, guess you're always mama's little boy.  icon_biggrin

I agree, I have zero problems with the driving in the game...in fact I love the feel of it

guess all those hours I've been playing Forza 2 and GT5 Prologue recently has paid off.  if you drive realistically and carefully in GTA IV, you should have no problems

Coolest moment so far:

Mission where drug dealers pile out of a house and I'm supposed to kill them.    I happened to be in my car so I just gunned it and manged to pin two of them against the wall at 50 mph before they could turn the corner into an alley.   I jumped out of the car and ran the other one down.

My problem is I hit people at 50+ and they don't die.  I don't get it.

The wall that I rammed them against helped.  slywink

about a third of the way through the missions (just opened up algonquin island) and i really love this game.  the driving has finally clicked for me and i can handle even the junkers and the scrap heaps with ease.  hell, i have even used roman's old crappy cab to outrun a 3 star wanted level with coppers in choppers all around.  damn that's fun.

i've had many missions which i would single out and say are my favorite, but i really liked these:

both execution moments and the missions leading up the them.
getting ambushed by a huge group with jacob in a warehouse, then getting the full attention of the police.
picking off dealers with a sniper rifle.
making an escape up one building, over the roof into another, and then down the second building, then escaping a huge police pursuit by jumping my vehicle over a barrier onto a freeway below and getting away scott free.
hearing the last of a group of dealers yell out "hey man, i didn't even know these guys" after two of his buddies fell right next to him.

i like the cover system but i really wish they would let you crouch when lined up on the side of a doorway/full wall.

My problem is I hit people at 50+ and they don't die.  I don't get it.

If it's anything like the previous GTA's, the "boss" people (people you gotta kill in missions) tend to have high endurance and hitting him with vehicles don't kill them like normal people.

But if you can hit them fast enough where they fly into the air, that's guaranteed death.

Or just run over them, park the car there and blow it up.

That one doesn't help if you gotta kill a ton of people, though. But great for single-person assassination missions. (Or was in GTAIII, that is...)

Had a mission that required chasing a guy down in a car.  This is the one where they tell you that you can fire out of the car.  I have an uzi, so I chase after him, firing in short bursts because I only have 50 bullets.  Apparently a passing cop didn't like me shooting, and within a few moments, I have two stars, and I still have to catch this other guy.  Also, I'm out of bullets.

Unsure of what to do, but without any other options, I proceed to go on a five minute chase, evading the horde of cops, and ramming the guy when I can.  Eventually, his car looks like crap, and he's riding on four rims, but he's not stopping and neither are the cops.  Eventually, I manage to ram him into a street light that sets his car on fire.  Then he gets out of the car, engulfed in flames, flailing his arms about and screaming.  I bang a quick u-turn (still avoiding cops), and see him smoldering on the ground, but I haven't gotten a mission success message yet.  I run him over, and that pops up the win message.  Lose the cops, and all is well in Liberty City again.

Had a pretty crazy second date with Michelle. Was going to pick her up and my car was pretty banged up but since you switched cars in the first date I did not bother to change car.
Well it turned out the game did not change cars and as we was driving down the street I must have banged into something because Michelle suddenly says "The car is on fire."

I do the gentlemanly thing and jump out of the car and run away. Michelle however is clever and follows me. I turn around just in time to see my car in a pileup explode. Very impressive explosion too it was. So we need a new car and I notice a a abandoned car a little ways infront of the burning car. I figure that will do and we get into that car.

Thats when other cars in the pileup explodes. Whoops, but we make it and drive off for a magician show. Michelle complains about there being lots of crooks in the audience. Nico tells her he would not know anything about that.  icon_biggrin

Eh, I barely put half an hour into either game and I'm confident enough to brag about my driving skills as well! Seriously, the physics are excellent its all a matter of becoming adept at the different range of vehicles and their handling.

I suck at driving, but I still love the car physics and their weight.  Kind of makes me want to learn a hardcore racing sim just to learn how to handle cars better.

I just have to say that, setting aside all the technical and mechanics improvements, the biggest success of GTA4 is the characters and story.  The story has weight, the characters at first seem to be typical GTA cartoonishly bad characters, but then the layers start peeling away and you get better looks into their personalities.

I've finished with the Vlad segments and a few missions after that.  Went on dates with Michelle, and her character seems pretty taken to Nico.  Tried my luck and scored, but something about the voice acting in the what should be funny sex sequence audio makes me think there's something else going on with the Michelle character, mainly because she doesn't sound sincere.  Or maybe the voice actor could take it seriously because she does a great job with Michelle's other dialog.

I purposely hold off on any visits to the strip club till I know my wife won't walk in to my room. She's a wonderful woman but doesn't have any empathy at all for game playing, much less in-game porn (as mild as it is). At least she now tolerates the idea that I'm going to be a game player as long as my hands can hold a controller or work a keyboard and mouse. She would *really* prefer I stick to SimCity and flight sims and even wargames.

Played about three and a half more hours yesterday. Did a few mainline missions but also did some drug deliveries for Little Jacob and three taxi jobs for Roman. I also explored some more while listening to the radio. I would seriously consider playing for a DLC for another good rock radio station.

I've done three stunt jumps. While I have the strategy guide and could use it to track my stunt jump locations, I think I'll try just putting Post-its on the big map that came with the game. I might be seriously considering going for 100% completion on the game!

I spent several hours late last night doing nothing but ranked races online; there's a lot that reminds me of playing Forza online.

First, I really need Ike's "Don't be a dick" bumper sticker.  The ass-shatery is more forgivable here than in Forza because, well, this is GTA, but it'd be nice if more people wanted a (somewhat) cleaner race.

That said, the races pretty much unfold the way they did in Forza: you hang back in the first corner and watch everyone else destroy themselves and then race a good race with the 3 other survivors.  Except now it takes two or three corners to clear everyone out.  And you sometimes race minivans or helicopters.  In traffic.  With courses that often cross themselves.

I know this is no sim, but the driving model really is such a huge improvement.  I stayed up till 2am racing online; there's no way it would be that fun with the old driving system.  "Slow in, fast out" and all that jazz really works.  It's such a great (evil) feeling to take a corner smoother than someone else and hear them complain about I have a faster car as I pull away on the following straightaway.  We're driving the same damn car!

Ha great comic.

I'm really enjoying the game....the story rocks and totally pulls me in.  I am very accustomed to the driving now and generally have no problem with it.  I also enjoy the motorcycles.  I'm going to be vegging this weekend playing for sure.

I have a question though....I'm still pretty early in game, but still spoilers....

Spoiler for Hiden:
I just did the mission where Dmitri tries to kill you and then they blow up Roman's work and apartment.  Now we're at Mallorie's in the new pad and I realized I only did 1 of Roman's cab missions.  Are those gone for me now?  Did I miss an achievement from not doing that?

Roman gets it up and running again with the insurance money fairly soon after.

I'm so disappointed that this game couldn't have come out in the middle of tax season while my wife was working so much. Now after all those weeks of her being gone so much of the time she expecting me to spend a lot of time with her, which is certainly reasonable. Still... it's freaking GTAIV, for heaven's sake  icon_frown

agree, the one station is good, but already a little repetetive. If I had only one complaint about the game, it is that i liked the radio in vice city 100% more.

DLing radio stations is a great idea though

the one thing I'm not liking so far is the fact you can't do missions using different approaches.  I got the laundrymat mission and decided to case the place before hand.  Seeing the back exit and the van right next to it I figure I'd block it off with a car and went in the front.  Sure enough the guy runs out the back door and my car has magically disappeared and I have no choice but to break into one of the others sitting in the back to commence the chase.  The first time it looked like my target had gotten on the freeway according to the mini map, so I found the on ramp and was greeted with 'he got away'.  The second time I tried stealing his van from the back when I get the 'you spooked him and he ran out the front' message.  At that point I just turned off the system without saving, had a couple of beers, went back and proceeded to fill his van with lead as he tried to escape, taking out all kinds of pedestrians in the process and racking up a nice wanted rating, which disappeared as soon as I caught him.

Later on in another mission the targets car mysteriously appears in a spot that was empty seconds before.  Now it's a car I'd recognize as I just saw it in the mission right before this one, but since it doesn't physically exist I can't have Nico smarten up and try to prevent another chase.

Another thing I noticed last night was that I started to see alot of popup all of a sudden, like in the safehouse where I ran inside and it took a few seconds for everything to appear in it, plus another 'cut scene' where the background took a few seconds to pop in.  this just started last night and I'm hoping it was just a glitch as I hadn't had it before.

One thing that I did find really neat was when I car jacked a muscle car the owner grabbed onto the door and tried to open it as I drove off, then actually hung onto the door as I dragged him a few blocks.  I finally knocked him off by clipping another car, but man, I was LOL'ing the whole time.  I'm also like the Vladistock (or whatever it's called) radio station, but the Social Club still isn't listing any of the songs I tag using ZIT.

I actually did that with a cop by complete accident.  I was driving back from having just completed a mission when I see a random dude running from a police officer.  I decided to do my civic duty and help the cop.  I slammed my car into the wall, clipping the perp to allow the cop to make an easy arrest.  Instead, the cop tells me to step out of the car and starts opening my door.  I throw it into reverse and take off down the street with the cop in tow.  Once I hit a good enough speed, blood starts splattering the pavement and the cop eventually let go.  Funniest moment in-game so far. biggrin

I did the same thing, I tried to destroy his van and he ran out the front.  then I tried balocking the back alley with cars.  It worked for me.  He rammed through the two cars I had there though.  I had them at the end of the alley just before the street, maybe you had yours too close inside that alley.

Finally got my copy from Amazon last night, and when I wasn't on the lookout for tornados I managed to get a few good hours of play in.

I'm definitely not a big racing game fan, and usually I hate driving games where I can't just hold down the accelerator and go, but I have to say I really like the changes to the driving mechanics.  First I dig using the right shoulder button for the gas and the left shoulder for the brake.  It's easy that way for my mind to associate them with actualy driving.  Compared to the old GTA games I also like that the cars all feel like they have some weight to them and partly because of this it's much easier to drive leagally if you want.  There's been a couple of times I've slid around a corner that I felt I was going slow enough to make, but overall it feels about right to me.  Plus once you get the hang of driving it's easy to do sweet looking 180's to turn around. smile

The other big thing for me is the new combat system.  It's a little touchy and not perfect (especially it seems when fighting multiple enemies), but it's light years better than the old system.

Also, having the text message show up to give you the option to restart a mission is a nice, but more often than not it seems like I end up having to make an annoyingly long drive to get to the mission start when I do that anyway, so there's still some irritating repetitionwhen you fail missions.

True, but that takes money and/or time.  At least early on it's a pretty big hit to cash to take a cab and skip to the end, and I can get there faster driving myself than the cabbies can even if I tell them to hurry.

Er, pressing A  will get them to skip the trip entirely.  Unless you unlocked a car with teleportation, then the cab is faster.  Money for a cab trip is only a concern very early on but I'll leave it at that.

True, but that takes money and/or time.  At least early on it's a pretty big hit to cash to take a cab and skip to the end, and I can get there faster driving myself than the cabbies can even if I tell them to hurry.

at some point early on the cab cost is alleviated for a bit, but yeah, the cabbies are a bit on the dim side.

thats the random characters, they are dotted about,i have been trying to find others,i have done about 8-10 little missions for them, they range from taking the random character home or taking out thugs for them...that guy who gave you the $100 is called Brian,he has two more little missions for you if and when you find him again(he will be in a different place next time...near comrades i think is where he will be now, near the cop shop..near your save house) ..i have just done a mission for Badman who was sitting on a bench in east city

they only turn up however, after you have done certain missions, and i think the marker is only there on the map if you are close by...one girl, sara i think only turns up in suffolk in the evening(after 9pm)...and also in suffolk is the guy you were on the boat with at the beginning,he has a favour as well for you to do

Great soundtrack in the game. The coolest song I have heard is the theme song for radio host Art Bell's old show "Dreamland". The song is damn cool, its called The Oh of Pleasure by Ray Lynch, and I heard it on that electronic music channel. (can't recall the station name)

Any favorite radio stations yet?  I've found myself tuning into JNR (Jazz Nation Radio) the most often.  I knew and loved just about all those jazz classics even before the game, and having them play while in a heated GTA mission evokes a very Cowboy Bebop feeling.

See you next time, Space Cowboy.

I actually haven't even gotten to the jazz station yet.

The only station I immediately turn off is the hard rock station (though even that one has an okay song or two).  I've been very impressed with the radio in this game.  San Andreas had the worst selection, IMO, but I loved tooling around Vice City with anything blaring.

And for DJ's you've got Iggy Pop, Juliette Lewis, Karl Lagerfeld (!), and a bunch of guys from SNL.

The actress????? She's a DJ in the game?

Went bowling last night to try and get a "turkey" (keep getting 2 strikes and missing the third  mad ) and I heard Queen's "One Vision" from Iron Eagle.  That is so random, but so cool.

How do you find out about these kinds of things?  With games this large I stress about missing something (taking a mission that forwards the storyline and eliminates the need to do a previously available mission), and I didn't know about the random stranger missions.  For example, how do you know such details about Sara's availability in Suffolk?  I'm not suggesting that you're stalking Sara per se, but I'm curious how you learned so much.  From a game guide, online resources, word of mouth?  Obsessed video gamers need to know!

I worry that if I don't travel close enough to these random characters I'll never experience the level of depth this game offers.

the one thing I'm not liking so far is the fact you can't do missions using different approaches.

In GTA San Andreas where you climb into the bar from the roof and then have to do a car chase, I shot out the tires of their vehicle with a silenced pistol.  When they tried to get away, they were sliding all over the place because of the flat tires.  It was hilarious.  Would that work here?

I took Michelle to a pub offering darts and whooped her ass.  In the process I made it a point to earn the "score 180 points" achievement.  The "turkey" achievement is next on my list.  I can't remember, are there any pool achievements?

Yes, very random, but certainly cool.  Brings back memories of Chappy's voice coming from the walkman strapped to Dave Masters' thigh.
