according to the boss at Epic that may be the case.    sucks for the die hard fans, although I guess in that time frame I might give the series another chance.  2 didn't end in a cliffhanger, did it?

It would be unfortunate if that were the case.  Gears is probably my favorite franchise of this generation.  There wasn't really a cliff hanger at the end of 2.  But there were certainly unanswered questions.

i am not a die hard fan,but this is quite sad,Gears of War 2 was fantastic...i thought the first was great but the second outshined it with its story..so are we actually expecting an Xbox 3 in 2011-2012?,i thought recently some head MS boss said a new xbox wont happen for another 5 years?

i am just trying to remember the end of 2...can't for the life of me remember what happened...i need to play them both again

I agree.

And yeah, I love the Gears games and hope to see more from Epic in the future. smile I actually like them more than Halo by a significant measure!

I loved the Gears games.  I can't imagine Epic not trying to squeeze another one out this generation.  I couldn't make heads or tails of the plot.  I remember a lot of the scenes of the second one, but the day after finishing it, I couldn't remember how they fit together, or even what order they were in.  I suppose that's the difference between story and plot.  I feel that, like the Halo games, the story was pretty good but the plot was incomprehensible.

I liked Gears so much I actually finished it, and that says a lot.

Kinda glad they are going to wait a while for a new one. Keep it fresh and leave 'em wanting more.

Maybe by then the Multiplayer will be worth a damn.

I love the Gears series, but with the exception of Horde, the multiplayer has always been a huge letdown or outright broken, as was the case with GoW 2.

This makes no sense, there was a ton of unanswered questions at the end of Gears 2, why not round out the trilogy and release the xmas after Reach?

The only way I can imagine them not releasing one more Gears for the 360 is if they try to branch out and do a new IP.  I would love to have another Gears though since it is one of my favorite series on the Xbox.  It doesn't get much better than a gun with a chainsaw!

They must have something else taking up major development energy to say they won't be doing another GoW this generation, I mean it's one of the biggest cash cow franchises out there right now. Too bad Epic isn't under Activision's wing, then we could just expect a new Gears game every two years. Or hell even Microsoft, they might at least force them to squeeze out a Gears of War: ODST slywink

Sorry to derail the topic a bit, but is Gears 1 worth playing? I tried it a bit, but never got out of the prison thingie planet place you start in...does it get better, or if I dont like it there, I wont like it later on?

hope the above makes sense...

Yes, it's very much worth playing.  It didn't really connect with me until the second chapter (when it starts getting dark out) so it does get better as it goes along IMO.  At least until the final boss fight which is quite horrid.

I've got Gears 1 on the PC but have never been able to finish it. It's just... bland. I've played tons of better shooters than this. Doesn't help that the story and characters are the typical juvenile "macho" stuff that is littered all across the game industry.

If the style and setting appeals to you, you'll probably find some enjoyment in it. Don't go in there expecting one of the greatest games ever though, because that it isn't.

If you do play Gears 1, do it before Gears 2.  2 is better in every single way and makes 1 not as much fun to play.

Kevin pretty much hit the nail on the head...there is a level when its dark, and raining and it was just great(especially as the game is now nearly 3 years old)...only problem i had with the first one was that there was so little story as to what happened, however i learned that if you keep it on the menu screen(on 360 at least) the trailer comes up where it tells/shows you a bit about the backstory

PC version had extra stuff in it,extra levels i think

online just isn't for me though

[update]

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/next-gears-will-be-on-next-gen-consoles

Quote
Update: Epic Games president Michael Capps claims he misspoke during a Q&A session at the Tokyo Game Show today when he said, "If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is."

Speaking to Eurogamer after the event, Capps explained that if the next Gears of War - assuming there is one - were to be released in the next "four to five years", it would be for current consoles.

Were it to be based on Unreal Engine 4, however, it would have to come out on the next round of consoles, because those are the machines for which Epic is targeting its next generation of money-spinning engine technology.

"If we ship a game in the next few years, it'll be Unreal Engine 3. If we ship a game on next [generation] consoles, it will likely be Unreal Engine 4," he told Eurogamer.

I'd be surprised Epic or Microsoft would leave that
much potential money on the table for that many years.

Maybe it's just a case of focusing on other projects for awhile? It also keeps the series fresh if they have some distance between releases. Especially if Borderlands becomes a huge hit.

Well another thing to look at is that they may want to do things they can't do with this gen.
It sucks to have to wait, but if they finish the series with a bigger bang then so be it.

Look at God of War 3 for example. How about HALO, Diablo 3 or Fallout 3?

Just examples of games that came out (or will come out) in later technology.
It may not have been planned that way for those titles, but I am sure they were or will be worth the wait.

Epic didn't make it. The game just used their engine.

As for Unreal Tournament Epic has already said that its on hte back burner for awhile so UT4 isn't around the corner either. Maybe they are doing something new.

Well I hate to use the word definitely as money seems to change people's minds, but this link should help with the theory

I can definitely see MS wanting Epic to hold that last game in the series for their next console. Having a new Gears title available at launch would significantly increase the attractiveness of the console.
