I can go buy a next gen console

Psst, none of the current consoles are "next-gen", and they haven't been for years. slywink

I'm retarded this way.  retard I've all the 'last-gen' consoles, with a PS2 currently connected to my HDTV.  icon_lol I'm thinking Thanksgiving I'm pulling the trigger on a 'current-gen' console, at last.

Here's what they're speculating: The yen is strong against the dollar, and Nintendo is usually pretty careful about price points. Expect it to be about $249 when it hits the states. IIRC, the DS launched at 15000 yen and was $149 here.

And when you think about it, $249 isn't that crazy. The DSiXL was $229, sold like hotcakes, and was basically a DSi in a bigger shell.

I completely agree as far as the price goes. I even remember Nintendo saying something about how its poor income last quarter was based around how the yen was strong against the dollar, or something of the sort.

Plus, $300 gives you a 3D capable portable gaming machine that doesn't require you to purchase a brand new $1000 HDTV or buy any goofy glasses to constantly wear. I fully intend on buying one Day 1, even at $300.

Oh, and somebody worked out that based on the March release, if you save $15 every week from now until then, you'll have enough money.

yup, $250 is the best price i think we can expect on this for a while.  however, i also expect that most retailers will try the same crap they did when the last major systems hit and force you into a bundle with a game and some overpriced accessories.

i really wish they had just announced the US price at the same time.

I can't claim to have any inside insight, but I'm extremely comfortable guaranteeing that Nintendo's not going to price the 3DS at $299. It would be insanity, and they're generally a lot more careful with their prices than other companies are.

Barely, anyhow. As one employee put it about what their morning e-mail said:

"We don't know the release date, we don't know the price, we don't know what colors it'll have, and we don't know the launch titles. But dang it, we'll take your money!"

Oh, and if you want to fully pay it off, it's currently in their system as just over a thousand dollars for some reason nobody can figure out.

On that note, yes, I preordered for $50. I'll wait until Nintendo announces release info and such (I thought I read that sometime in early January they'd be doing that), and then switch my preorder over to a color of my choosing if needed.

I just preordered this today.

I have no idea if it sucks or not.
I have no idea if it is fantastic or not.
I have no idea what it will cost.
I have no idea if the 3D is just a gimmick or not.

I walked in and loaned gamestop my money because I really really really really want this to be uber cool.

Nintendo: Not for the kindergarten set

Quote
Consumer electronics companies are betting that 3-D is going to be the next big thing, and several are heavily promoting the latest 3-D televisions. But the advent of consumer-level 3-D has been accompanied by concerns about what effect the hardware might have on the human visual system. Although there’s no evidence of harm, most of these companies have issued disclaimers warning against the use of this hardware by children.

Now, Nintendo Japan has joined them, warning against the use of its upcoming Nintendo 3DS system by anyone under the age of six.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company posted the warning on its Japanese website in advance of an event promoting the device’s February release. According to its translation, the company is warning that, “For children under the age of six, looking at 3-D images for a long time could possibly have a negative impact on the growth of their eyes.”

We’ll hope that the “growth of their eyes” bit is just a bad translation. Concerns about the impact of 3-D are based on the fact that, outside of holograms, no system is actually capable of generating an actual 3-D image. Instead, various systems work by creating the illusion of depth by carefully manipulating the information received by the human visual system. In effect, 3-D involves playing tricks on our ability to perceive depth.

None of this will harm the actual eye itself, much less any growth it undergoes during childhood. The concern is that the portions of our visual systems that reside in the brain are adaptive; they adjust to the information we receive, and can remap connections in order to operate more efficiently on a typical input.
...
In short, Nintendo’s warning may be reasonable and cautious, but it doesn’t reflect a known health risk.

According to Nintendo, battery life will be 3-5 hours while playing 3DS games and 5-8 hours while playing DS games.  Also, you'll be able to transfer over any DSiware you've purchased.

The 3D-2D slider concerns me, I'm worried I'll be constantly messing with the settings with each game I play. I hope they give it a recommended setting and let you go from there.

Hope they have something better in store for the US.  I was hoping for at least the OoT remake or Kid Icarus at launch.  As it is, I'm not seeing anything I want (from the Japanese list).

Agreed, Super Street Fighter IV and Professor Layton are the only titles on that list that interest me. Oh, and Namco needs to put out a disclaimer with their Ridge Racer releases. something like; "This racing game is of inferior quality and only suitable as a launch title where competition is minimal."  icon_razz

Retail games? I honestly doubt that Nintendo will go that way, as they love having a retail presence in Gamespot and the like.

Ouch...too pricey for me.  I'll be waiting until there's more than launch titles (and at least a decent RPG or two) before I take the plunge.

EDIT:  Just read up further in the thread, and apparently this was the price everyone expected it to launch at.  Guess I need to start paying attention to things on the 3DS front.   icon_redface

Gah. Nintendo really doesn't understand online functionality.

While I agree, it's better than having one code for the system and one for each game you want to link up with.

That said - yes, it's still annoying and dumb.
