OK.  First of all... just cause I started the thread in no way, shape, or form means that I'm organizing it.    (statement directed to Boob-boy).

But, because I do think it's a good idea, and I like to do my part in supporting our small little family-like sports community here at CG, here's what we got so far.  I will update this thread as (and if) we get more claims.  Just post a request in this thread.

Anyone who actually does want to organize it from a rules, xbox setup, etc, standpoint, please volunteer below also.

- - - - -

ESPN NHL 2k6 (xbox) Player Team Selections:

Starshifter - Islanders
Arkon - Pens
Mike - Flames
Shifter - Bruins
Jacktard - Devils

This is going to be on the original XBox, right?  With the new pricing scheme, I'm NOT getting a 360 at launch.

I'm going to say,'Yes'.

Original Xbox.

360 supposed to be in November and I'm not waiting that long to play hockey!!

4 bills is a little steep, but at least it's the only new system this season.

Original Xbox to begin -  check....

Getting a 360 at launch and buying the 360 version of hockey - check... I will have both most likely.

X-Box Mag just ripped it (6.7) and the stuff they said seemed legit.

Still IN!

No kidding!  An ESPN Sports game getting a 6.7 is unthinkable really.  Especially losing the NFL rights, I was under the impression every other game was going to go into overdrive.

What could they possibly have screwed up so bad to warrant a score like that???

From what I remember:

-Skating seems floaty
-Scoring seems random
-Checking was bad
-It was too easy

HUGE dissapointment if any of it turns out to be true!

ESPN NHL2K4 was also pretty asstacular, if I recall.

I hate that the Hockey franchises are never consistently good.  At least in football you know what to expect.

Why did they have to mess around with 2k5's greatness?  If the review was true and all (kind of interested to see what they gave 2k5 score-wise to compare), why ruin a GREAT game of hockey?  Grr.

I wouldn't call 2K5 great, but it was certainly very good.  Better than EA's crap.

The two main flaws in 2K5 was the abhorently slow stick side of the goalie (I could score there at will) and the horrendously buggy and bad franchise mode, which seems to be a consistent feature in ESPN titles.

I did enjoy 2K5 a LOT until I ran into those issues though, and it was better than the garbage that was NHL 2005.

Well, all I did was play online w/my two roomies.  Plus there was no real season, so I never fooled around with franchise mode.

I don't know about the weak stick-side, but man, the S-move pwns biggrin  I really enjoyed 2k5.  That and NHL 94 are the best two hockey games, if not sports games, I have ever played.

Well... I had a ton of fun with NHL2K5 with my buddies coming over. Of course at some point the game just generated to who could get to the stick side exploit sooner, resulting in scores of 15-12 or something... but that was still fun smile

I'm with gellar on 2K5.

I went from unable to score to unable to be stopped. Goal variety was VERY weak.

Gretzky was still the best game overall last year!

We'll all find out next week!

I had some breakaway goals, some one-timers and even a wicked hard slapshot from just inside the blueline (which went stick-side) while playing ESPN NHL last night.

What hockey game really has good goal variety?  There's been a "trick" to score in every hockey game I've played that seems to be used 75% of the time.  Just curious, that's all.

SO who's getting what?  I'm gonna purchase NHL2k6...*may* rent NHL 2006 if ESPN is a dropoff like that Xbox Mag says.

Well, NHL 2k6 got an 8.5 from Gamespot.

Review Link

A few things I just have to say:

The menus look UGLY.  INCREDIBLY UGLY.  The review pointed this out, but I had seen a movie awhile ago and was shocked at how lame they looked.  And apparently, according to Gspot's review, they are horribly unintuitive as well.  Faaaantastic.

The commentators suck ass.  Gary Thorne and Bill Clement had the *best* commentary of any sports game I have ever played.  Watching a gameplay movie, hearing these two new guys (commentators from Hockey Night in Canada), man, it was pretty poor.  I'm not sure how good they are IRL, but damn, it sounded so fake, so forced, during the gameplay movie.  Sad to see that go.

And of course, the slick ESPN presentation, as well.

BUT the review did mention the on-ice gameplay played much like last year's version, which is just great.

Well, before I even am IN! - it appears I am OUT!

I have 2k5 and I love the gameplay.... but....

I've watched the videos, and to say the commentary is horrible in 2k6 is a monumental understatement.  It is downright PAINFUL !

The menus and missing ESPN presentation are more than I can take.

The Flyers are open if anyone wants them.  Sorry guys, I just can't do it.

If you guys go more than 2 games with the "commentary" still audible, I will be amazed.

Do you guys actually play these games with the commentary on?  Personally I turn it off in every sports game after about 5-6 games anyway.  I don't think I can name a console sports game where I actually left the play-by-play on for more than a week.  I also really don't care that much about the menus.  IF the game plays good on the ice and has the same online league support as last year I will be a happy guy.

You're not getting 2K6 because of commentary and menus?

Now, I'd understand if the gameplay was crap or something else, but commentary and menus!?!?!?

Next thing I know you'll be rejecting games because they are released on odd numbered days!

What's wrong with you!!!!?????

I agree with Devil here.  If you don't like the gameplay that's one thing.  But to not buy the game because of menus and commentary seems kind of silly to me.

Bill Clement and Gary Thorne have *never* gotten old and I've played hours upon hours of 2k5.

Just listen to those guys in some gameplay videos.  It's like they took parts of phrases and mixed them up with others.  It's really, really shitty.

I may have to turn it off this year.

Are you kidding me!!!

How can you guys play a sports game without the commentary on????

I leave it on in every game I play.  Which is why it IS a huge deal to me.

I suppose I'm in the minority, but yep, menus and commmentary ARE that big of a deal to me.

...and furthermore:

"Commentary in all sports games is retarded"    -  Nope.  But you saying that may be.

"Silly"  -  Nope.  Presentation is huge in my book.  Period.

But at least I have learned the next time I am trying to decide what is important to "me" in a sports game, I need come in here and check with you guys first.

I guess you loved NFL Fever.  The menus, presentation, and commentary were amazing.  Too bad the gameplay was terrible.    biggrin

Of course if I find that rare game that has great presentation, commentary, and gameplay, then that is the holy grail.  But to me gamplay is 99% of any sports game.  That's just my opinion of course.  I'd just hate to see you miss out on a good game because some web site didnt like the menus, and the comentary sounded bad on a demo clip.

Commentary in ALL sports games IS terrible.  Why? because once you play it enough you realize that they always say the exact same thing.  Do I want to listen to a broken record?  Nope not really.

All commentary I've witnessed often: falls behind in the play, misses important events, puts the wrong emotion into a given situation (ie normal commentary when they should be excited, or excited commentary when nothng it really happening,) and often just boils down to saying the the players name. "Roberts, Linden, Sakic)

All it does is remind me that I'm playing a video game instead of making me feel that I'm playing a real game or at least watching a real game.

Do yourself a favour and turn off the commentary and listen to the swish of skates and bodies slamming into the boards instead.

I've said before and I will say it again:

The best hockey game ever made was Wayne Gretzky Hockey 3 combined with Hockey League Simulator 2 on the PC a billion years ago.  Nothing came close since then except Midway's NHL Hitz Pro.  Talk about presentation.  Lockdown would have adored it.  No other game ever got me pumped up more than Hitz Pro.  I still own it and still play it occassionally.

I don't know what I'm going to do.  I might wait to get the X360 version since I am trading in my Xbox for money towards the X360.  I just don't know yet.  I do know one thing:  I will NOT get EA's hockey crap.

I have it and love it.  It's not going to get a 10 for simulation of real hockey, but it's fun as hell!

- - - -

And just to clear the air, I respect the differing opinions on both the non-importance of commentary and non-priority of presentation in sports games.  I happen to disagree.  And I don't think I would ever call someone's opinion of them "silly".  (with the possible exception of Devil of course, but that is kind of a given.)

Played one game of 2K6 on the default and beat the Bruins 9-3. I outshot the Bruins 46-16. Then played a real game pumping the difficulty up to All-Star and lost to the Isle 2-0. Was actually 1-0, their second goal was one of those stupid goalie passes that I shouldn't have made. I got out shot in that game 24-19.

Overall I think it's better than last year just due to the fact that I scored all kinds of ways in that first game, backhanders, one timers, wrist shots, deflections, you name it.

In defense of Poncho - The menus are vomit enducing and the play by play was worse than the old Ump/Announcer from Intellivision Baseball!!

Any questions and I'll do my best to answer them!

...off to install NHL '06 on my PC...
