Building on dep's post in the "What are you buying this week?" thread:

I think it's time to start talking about this.

...and sure, come on in and try to convince me that 2K is still better.

Go Sharks!!!

With that said, who is the team with the new uniform in the latest EA trailer?  Kind of green-ish iirc?

I am SO looking forward to this.  The online mode seems awesome and I love how your display name is the first name, last name you input for your character and not your gamertag or PSN name.

I think they'll definitely be some kinks... but implementing this, in a hockey game no-less, is a ballsy thing.  It could very well be the start of the same sort of thing for all sports games (football, basketball, if this proves to be a success, I could see EA implementing this to other sports).

The problem lies in the players you're playing with.  Do they understand hockey?  Are they playing a defensemen... and crashing the net?

I've had some experiences with Be-a-Pro online for FIFA like this.  FIFA 08 (and the upcoming 09) has this sort of online mode already, though not a full stat-tracked 'MMO' version like the one in NHL 09.  You just play five v five with the full squads.  And you'll see people chasing balls, getting out of position... but when you play with a team that understands their roles, their positioning, it's a lot of fun.

I'm super psyched to be playing a defensemen.  Not sure if it'll be the "aggressive defensemen" 'mold' or the "hang-back" type, but we'll see.

OK - So now that it's settled.

How are we organizing our team and who's going to force dep to get this for 360?  icon_biggrin

I'll be the small, but rugged, left winger with a short temper wearing #13.

It's an open competition for me this year. I want to like 2K but the improvements, and yes the new online features, really have me taking a strong look at EA's offering. I'll have to rent and play both before making a purchase this year.

Fist off, can't join a 360 league since I sold off my 360 months ago   crybaby

Second, NHL 2k9 actually does look improved upon from 2k8.  Personally, I don't think 2k8 was THAT BAD of a game... but NHL 08 just was leaps and bounds better than 07, which made me favor that one.  Will definitely rent 2k9 to see how it is... will be buying NHL 09.

Can't wait for another new year of NHL. EA is now totally dominating the battle, which is an odd saying.

Anyways - I'm up for some of this online play.

Shut up. SHUT UP!  I can't think about this kind of awesomeness right now!

In, day one, 360, and I'll take whatever role is up, which I'm guessing means I'm going to have to make like my boy Karl Alzner and be a stay-at-home D-man (as badly as I want to be a net-crashing Mike Green with a fauxhawk...).

No doubt.  Getting people to play 1 on 1 league games is hard enough. Getting multiple people people on each team to actually show up and coordinate a season of play will never happen.

It does sound cool in theory though.

Can't we theoretically have 50 people on the team?

Getting 6 out of our 50 should be easier than relying on 1 person for a game.

We'll see!

That's my thinking.  And I believe you only need 3 people to show up for a game, right?  Now it may not work on GT - but overall, I would think most teams could field 3 people out of 50 without even trying.  As for the "teams" with 6 total members... yeah, that has "disaster" written all over it I think.

You can have up to 50 people signed up in your 'guild.'  In order to score any points for your guild, only three - six people need to play a game; the rest of your team is made up of CPU players.

Luckily, I have a fairly dedicated player to play with me (TML, twin, BROTHER) and I'm trying to convince Gatorfavre to get the PS3 version so we can rip it like the good ole days.  There's a dedicated team of three right there   icon_biggrin

Bah.  I bought NHL 08 last year after playing a crapload of NHL 2k3 on my PS2 butt I just couldn't get into it.  I couldn't get used to the newfangled controls.

LOL.  I had no idea you two were twins.  I always had a suspicion you were the same guy with two accounts.  But that explains it.  My wife is a twin.  I love the whole concept.

It's an open competition for me this year. I want to like 2K but the improvements, and yes the new online features, really have me taking a strong look at EA's offering. I'll have to rent and play both before making a purchase this year.

I'm actually going to be checking out this years 2K9 for the Wii. I've read some previews and it sounds promising, but I'm not expecting too much and no online is a bummer. Still the ability to finally shoot in a hockey game by motioning with the Wiimote means I'll definitely be at least renting it.

In regards to NHL09's team mode, I've always felt it to be a bit  frustrating to play on co-op teams offline, let alone online. That being said I do still want to give it a try for at least a week or 2. EB has made it easy to get either hockey game this year in my city by offering generous trade-ins, so it's likely I'll end up with both games.

I did enjoy 2k9's demo, simply because it felt like a prettier version of 2k7.  Which meant scoring some S goals & good checking.. essentially, a more 'arcadier' version of hockey compared to NHL 08.  We'll see with 09's demo how things have progressed...

Well, EA's own site has the news stating it would be up for PSN today... now that news post has disappeared and it's not in today's PSN update.  Then there's also this:

Thanks for posting the picks. Based on those picks, it looks as good as any NHL 2K I played on the Xbox, which honestly is good enough for me. If they get the controls right I'll be picking this up along with NHL09.

Really enjoying the slowed-down pace of 09 as compared to 08.  Scoring a little more often now, as well.

About a week to go!! WOO!!
