i signed up earlier in the day...have participated in all the dashboard previews so far without any troubles, so i figured i might as well jump on this one as well.  i read an unconfirmed theory on another site that MS may be using this preview to test a new copy protection scheme for their discs and that the free copy of Reach may be their way of sneaking you a modified disc.  it's an interesting idea that would fit in line well with Microsoft's mention of a "new disc format" involved in the update.  they can't change the drives in everyone's 360s, but they can alter the software so that new discs are read differently...

Last update was when the Kinect launched, so not that long ago.

don't forget they used to do major updates twice a year.  of course a dashboard update doesn't necessarily mean the layout will change, it could just be for backend stuff.

We are conducting an open call for US based participants* for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format. Emphasis mine. They're talking about new disk layout (hence the new game). Looks like perhaps they're going to either force installs, or perhaps they have found some new efficiencies.

Speculations:

1) forced partial/full installs
2) license transfer to HD so you won't need the disk.
3) disc could refer to hard disk, but generally "k" and not "c" is used.
4) arrangement of data on disks to improve performance
5) further copy protection / DRM

I can't see it being number 2,as i would just buy games,install them and then take them back and trade in for the next new game i want

as you say in 3 the Disc/Disk thing at least in the UK its Disk for Floppy Disks and Hard Disk Drive,DVDs and CDs are Discs,but i know some of you guys say Disk for CDs or DVDs

If they add a generated key, and it registers based on console and phones home, they may be able to get the license per disk. I *really* hope that's the case, but I doubt it.

Wow they even sent emails to say you didn't get in?  I still haven't received anything.

EDIT: Ok I guess I got in.  I just checked the connect site and it said I am in the program.

i haven't gotten an e-mail yet, but i did go to the MS Connect website and was immediately taken to the update program's website when i signed in...says i'll be getting my free copy of Reach and access to the program at some time in the future, but no official start-date has been set yet.  there's also a little bit of information about how the program will work, including some basic details about how they're splitting participants into groups that will each experience the update in slightly different ways to test various issues.  while earlier programs were more like 'sneak peeks' of the latest dashboard, this is looking to be more of a true beta testing event.  i'm really curious to see the latest changes and learn how this whole beta programs plays out as it seems quite a bit different than the previous dashboard update previews.

I wonder if that has something to do with it.  Not necessarily in quite the literal sense, but if they consider gaming time and availability based upon time logged in the past few years then it wouldn't make much sense to select me.
