When I copy a game to my 360 hard drive, do I still need the disk in the drive to play?

Yep - copy protection.

As an fyi,  themes that are labelled "Premium Themes" are built for the new system (and have custom backgrounds for the Friends area, etc).

Well that was impressive. It only took between 2-3 minutes to do the update. I would have preferred an option for "no avatar", but it's no big deal, I just made something that looks somewhat like my Mii.

I think I like the new interface. It's certainly quicker than the old one, including signing in to XBox Live. You can also get to a sort of old style blade interface by hitting the guide button. Well done Microsoft.

I must confess to being intrigued by the Netflix thing. My wife and I are already members of the 1 out club, the value of which would increase tremendously with this. Those rotten bastards at MS may finally convince me to pay for Gold. Now I need to find a Gold card on the cheap...

I'm pretty sure I saw them at Newegg yesterday for $38.99 shipped.

Amazon has them for the same price ... with a 1 month bonus.

I was wondering if there was any logic to the backdrops you see behind each friend - sometimes it's like an xbox sculpture, etc.

I've always thought it was ridiculous that they charged money for gamerpics, but I have to say, if they had a Mets shirt or something, I might consider it.

I noticed that and wondered the same thing.

There seems to be either a limited variety in the avatar customization choices, or else a lot of people look like me.

I tried the Netflix streaming over the weekend and was very impressed.  My biggest concern was the video quality, but it's fantastic.  Not HD, but at least DVD quality if not better.  Also, so far everything I've watched seems to have been reformatted to 16:9 to fit my HDTV perfectly.  Or else the 360 is doing some magic behind the scenes on that.  Very, very happy with the Netflix integration and the NXE as a whole.

Do you have an active Netflix account? If so, it should work. The first code I gave it, it failed on for me, but i generated a new code and it worked fine. It immediately updated on the 360, and even brought my queue over.

If your netflix acct is currently not active (read: paid), it won't do anything.

Wait, so you have to go to Netflix.com and activate an account there, pay for whatever plan you want, and THEN go to XBOX Live? I'm confused.

I believe all management of your queue and account are done on the PC.  Only the actual streaming of the content is on the 360.

Oh ok. So the thing is actually controlled through netflix.com, NOT the 360. Makes sense I guess, but I was confused. Thanks Hark.

Yeah man.  With 4 bars of connection ping, the streaming video quality on two movies I sampled last night was crap, the aspect ratios for both were wrong, and the list of movies available in HD is horrible.

Weak sauce, man.  Weak sauce.

FWIW, I tried it and really liked it...the selection is very limited though, so don't expect all your movie watching to be on the xbox now though.

I ripped Fable II to my HD early this morning and all I can say is, WOW what a difference in performance in the UI. It's almost insta-menus compared to the painfully slow seconds it used to take to access a menu option. Much to my surprise I've found the NXE UI to be a vast improvement over the previous bladed one. Kudos to Microsoft for an excellent job on the design of this and the configuration process.

I'd love to install some games, but I just can't free up the space on the 20GB drive.  Maybe if I can find a reasonably priced drive, I'll start.  Still kills me that MS includes so many features that basically require a >20GB drive, and then charge so much to get one.  I mean, it's nice for those buying a system now, since the 60GB is standard, but some kind of smaller upgrade price for the millions of us who bought prior to now (and who also suffered through the worst of the hardware failures) would be nice.

I also couldn't get Netflix set up before I left for work, since the activation was down.  I'll be curious to see what kind of quality it winds up giving me.

You know, that's actually pretty easy to believe, because my experience with watching Netflix content on the PC has been wildly inconsistent.  Some movies look great, others look terrible.  The stuff I sampled on the 360, a couple of IMAX movies and a couple episodes of 30 Rock, all looked much better than I anticipated.  I'm sure there are plenty of movies that look like shit over the 360 connection, also look like shit streamed on the PC and that's because the original movie digitization or whatever was done poorly.  When it's done right, though, I think it looks great.

Their selection does leave a lot to be desired.  Still, it's a feature I'm paying exactly zero for, so I can't complain too much.

The current seasons of Heroes, CSI,  Numb3rs, and others are all available through Netflix,  which is nice.  They typically update the day after the original airing.

My Xbox froze shortly after I installed the update.  I had to restart the thing and now it appears to be working perfectly.

I always feel like I'm walking on a sheet of plate glass with this thing.

Now that it's going it's pretty damn snappy!  I like!

Played around with it some and am installing RB2. It's a bit busier than it probably needs to be but it's definitely snazzier than what we had. I tried a little Netflix and that seemed to work fine. That's probably the feature I'm most excited about.

EDIT:

Nevermind: found the Amazon 12+1 for $38.99.  Is there a better deal out there?  I guess I'll finally join the gang for online gaming.
