It's important to keep in mind that the Xbox One has sold 76% more units than the Xbox 360 did in its first 6 months, which means it's sold about 5.6m units compared to the 360's 3.2m in the same time span (source). Also, 8 of the top 10 best-selling console games in April were on a MS console, according to NPD (see the source I linked earlier). Of course, NPD doesn't track digital so there may be more Sony games in that list then they are reporting, but it still gives you directional results.

Microsoft isn't doing bad, they just aren't doing as well as Sony. And despite all the drama surrounding the Kinect announcement, MS's trailing hardware sales has to do with costing $100 more than the PS4. If anything, the lesson for them isn't that they shouldn't have tried to integrate the Kinect with the Xbox One, it's that they should have figured out how to price their product more competitively.

They've not sold 5.6 million to customers.  They've shipped that many to retailers.  MS really did a great job confusing  people with that 5M number they put out there when Sony announced selling 7M to actual customers.

I'm seriously considering shorting the absolute hell out of MS stock, just saying.

Not sure the Xbox is a big enough drag on the company where I would short them. Office is doing great for them, and they just came off a decent quarter as well.

Either way the point is the same, MS is doing much better this generation (so far), purely from a sales standpoint. I'm not sure what the profit margins are on the One Vs the 360, though.

I'm willing to bet that had the price points been swapped, if the PS4 was $500 and the One was $400, it would be the One with 7m sold and PS4 with 5m shipped. Now that they're more evenly priced, it can be a battle more focused on who has the best content.

Eh its April was pretty bad, 360 never sold that low until this month in fact.

XB1 sold 115k this past April, here are the 360 April numbers by comparison.

360:
April 2006 - 295K
April 2007 - 174K
April 2008 - 188K
April 2009 - 175K
April 2010 - 185K
April 2011 - 297K
April 2012 - 236K
April 2013 - 130K

Initial supply of both the 360 and Xbone affects the figures above.  I'd wager there were a greater number of Xbones shipped vs 360s during the initial months.

So yeah, Frys.com has Xbox One's (w/Kinect) for $429.99...and thanks to Best Buy's very liberal price matching policy....I got a Xbox One Titanfall Bundle for $429.99.  Yay me! smile

Here is the link to the Xb1 for $429.99

http://www.frys.com/product/7721518?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

The customer service rep at Best Buy was NOT happy about matching this though, so YMMV....his exact quote to me was "That's impossible! They don't have the XB1 for $429.99." Needless to say, I won that argument.

I was bombarded this weekend with the new 'price drop' news for the XB1.  Best Buy, Fry's, Toys R Us and Gamestop all wanted to let me know this exciting news.  Clearly retailers are very enthusiastic about the new sku.  Some even offered preorders.  Buzz and excitement before E3 is probably just what MS needed.

As an avid media consumer, I'm disappointed the XB1 "failed" as a multimedia all-in-one media box. Unfortunately it's the hardcore gamers that are going to set the tone for how your console does in the marketplace, and the majority of those people don't care about such things. I use my XB1 every single day as a media device, something I can't say for it as a gaming machine.

We really do need an all-in-one that brings everything together in the living room, instead of all these disparate little pieces that do one part of the whole pie. I think the XB1 was just a little too forward thinking and ahead of its time. There will be a day in the near future where talking to our electronics will be commonplace, media will be obsolete, and we'll put up with DRM because it means incredible convenience and value.

However, I'm still a gamer at heart and anything that brings the XB1 back into relevance with gamers is something I can live with.

That seems about right.

Although I don't think people would be totally averse to a "one device under the TV" unit someday (the clutter under there is unappealing), the solution is not to have a device that needs other devices connected to it to work.  I have a receiver that does this already, which made using the Xbone with my Tivo kind of pointless.  But what made it more pointless was that I never liked the idea of powering on two devices to do the job of one.  That seemed wasteful and adding an extra layer of cumbersomeness that was unnecessary.

I'm just glad they're adding back the auto-sign-in feature. It's a small thing, but when I only have one account on my machine there's no reason it can't automatically log in every single time with or without Kinect.

I know allowing us to connect an external storage drive is a great option, but it's one that I probably won't ever exercise. I'm simply not willing to have an extra drive hanging off the console.

I think they were hoping the ubiquitous Kinect would replace the need to ever think about signing in.  With the Kinectless SKU though, auto sign-in again becomes as useful as it was with the 360.

I just wanted to pop in here to mention something that's been bugging me since I got the system:

Which MS lamebrain thought it would be cool to buck the trend and insert the disc on the other side of the case?  It irritates me every time I get a game out.  I would just flip all the cover inserts upside down, but then their logo would be upside down.  Although, maybe they deserve that...

Kinect-Less XB1 will have access a 10% boost in power over the kinect version.

I expect that MS will allow developers to turn off Kinect when you are playing games that don't use kinect.

PC Driver now available for XB1 controller

I wouldn't mind replacing the well-worn wired 360 controller I use for PC games with a new XB1 controller.  Does anyone know the steps to make one of these talk to a PC wirelessly (I do have a bluetooth transmitter on my motherboard, if that's relevant), or does it only operate while connected via USB?

I don't think it's possible to use the Xbox One controller wirelessly with the PC at all, since it uses a unique new wireless communication.  I think you're stuck using it through the USB connection only, unless they release a wireless adapter at some point.

Okay, thanks!  Fortunately, it looks like the "Play & Charge" cable that comes with the full controller package is about eight feet long.  That would be plenty long enough for my needs.

Interesting Eurogamer article about the shift in messaging from "the power of the cloud" to "dedicated servers" and what that means, if anything.

It turns out, by the way, that the cloud demo shown a few months back with a building being blown into little bits was directly related to Crackdown.

It's always been smoke and mirrors anyways. Why not change the message? How beneficial is all this cloud/dedicated technology for people who aren't signed up for Xbox live? If someone just wants to play single player, can they still take advantage of the building falling down technology without having to subscribe to Live?

More to the point what happens with no internet connection.  Some of the XB1's early always on requirements make more sense that way

I've heard that the 'play and charge' cable is just a MicroUSB cable or something very very common. Go look around first before buying something.
