I think the new house rules are that threads labelled as just one console are just for discussing that one console, and anything comparing the two consoles is to be constrained to That Thread.

Yeah, I guess that's it.  I'd rather just have this thread of Xbox One talk, the other thread for PS4 talk, and "that thread" for the inevitable comparisons.

Any time people start talking about and comparing sales numbers and what they see on the shelves and whatever it seems like it devolves into people getting butthurt and epeens coming out to be measured and all that nonsense.

Continuing the year of shakeups, Marc Whitten has left Microsoft.  Now we just need Reggie or some other Nintendo bigshot to leave Nintendo and that will be all 3.  E3 sure is gonna be different this year.

I took a look at some slides, and from what I can tell the biggest difference will be in shader compile time, as DX12 apparently allows games to cache the compiled shaders. Games don't usually tell us what they're doing when they're loading assets, so it's hard to tell what kind of impact that may have, but from what I've seen in a couple of games that do show when they're compiling shaders, there can be noticeable gain from skipping that part. I must admit that I'm kind of surprised if this is an issue on consoles though. Precompied shaders sounds like something that would be an "obvious" feature for consoles, whereas PCs can't support that kind of thing due to the variations in hardware.

As mentioned before, most of the other things in the slides, at least when it comes to speed improvements, are things the Xbox One could (or at least should) already be able to do. This is probably the most developer-oriented DirectX release I've ever seen. The other releases I've been following since DX9 featured at least a few token graphical features that the end users could benefit from  (but usually didn't since DX9 has been a standard since the beginning of the last console generation), but I'm not seeing anything like that here. Then again, I didn't see all the slides or follow the presentation itself. I may have missed something.

I have no idea if the PS4 features pre-compiled shaders or not, btw. That's not something typically talked about outside of programming books.

I can't comment on how it will affect performance but it's basically two years out. That is a looong time.

I went to BestBuy this afternoon and got my $50 back...great deal that essentially gives you an Xbox One for less than $400 once you subtract the cost of Titanfall icon_cool

I'm a New XB1 owner also! Turned out to be a great deal:

By placing $500 of my tax return on an Amazon gift card, Amazon gave me an extra $50 (thus a $550 gift card)

Purchased Titanfall bundle for $499, sold the code for $40, and just got a friendly CSR at Amazon to refund me $50 because of the promotion. Basically got the XB1 for $360. Now I'm hunting for a cheap copy of Ryse on Ebay...

They're also doing the deal with the X1AMAZON coupon code, works for the Titanfall or Forza bundles.

This is fairly tempting.  Is it still true that you can use the XBox One without ever connecting the Kinect?

I don't know for sure if you can omit the Kinect for the entire setup process, but I've played my XB1 without the Kinect attached a bunch of times and it works just fine.  You lose out on the facial recognition automatic profile login, and you get a constant reminder in the corner of the screen that the Kinect is disconnected, but I was able to game without issue.

Of course, the times I've had my Kinect disconnected are some of the times I've most wanted to use the "Xbox, record that!" voice command.

I didn't know the console pesters you about it.  Is this article correct that the unplugged Kinect reminder only appears on the dashboard -- not while you're playing a game?

Yup, you don't need it at all for the initial setup. It asks if you want to set it up but you can just skip that part.

Not while playing a game, correct.  Even the dashboard reminder isn't very intrusive.  More it's just amusing as a "please please please we really wanted you to love Kinect" plea.

I use so many voice commands I don't think I could go back to it being unplugged.  The auto-login is also nice.

New update finally adds friend notifications so people will find it harder to ignore me.  yay!

Also an increase in quality of 'record that' recordings, so expect more of those as well

I avoid voice commands whenever possible but I don't know of a way to make the party screen go away without one. For that reason alone, Kinect becomes a must.

If you have your game up and the party screen snapped on the right, the first step is determining which screen has focus.  This is indicated by faith and hunches.  (there's a subtle outline I think?)

If the party screen doesn't have focus, double tap the to switch.  Once the party sidebar has focus, hit B.

Upload gameplay video directly to Youtube starting tomorrow.   I suspect the upload process will be slow just like uploading to the Upload Studio

Good feature nonetheless

BTW for those of you that are using this as a Media Center, they do have a mini remote now which is pretty serviceable.  Good for Blu-Rays and Amazon Prime, etc.  For (Satellite) TV, I still use an alternate remote (Logitech hybrid).
