Last night I was trying to show it off to some friends and pretty much none of the special things like voice activation or snapping/unsnapping was working well.

Voice recognition with a bunch of other people in the room/background noise is an exercise in futility. I had the same experience at Thanksgiving, and with multiple people milling around (even when they were attempting to be quiet), it just got confused. It's even worse if you have people screaming "Xbox watch porn!!!" at it constantly. When I play in the evenings after the kids are in bed, voice recognition is nearly 100%.

I think th multiplde people thing works better when they're actually registered.

also, you should try the "kinect can't hear me" when it is loud like that.

yeah, trying to do voice commands with random people deciding to talk over you is a pain.

All in all very happy with the Xbone's overall feature set, capabilities and potential, though slightly disappointed at the kind of "beta" state of things.

That's the exact thought i was getting with a lot of people's impressions

Yeah, I honestly think they were rushed to market to compete with the PS4 launch. I believe that they were originally targeting a Spring 2014 launch, but had to move that up....hence the sort of beta state of the OS. It will get better (it has too) and the games themselves are very good. Ryse looks better than anything on either console. I mean, it's incredible and the only game on either system to make me say "this is true next gen". I don't know how they did it, but MS needs to let all the 3rd parties know what that team did to make it look so good on the XB1.

Sounds like I need to add Ryse to my Santa list?
it does look incredible.

I gotta say, the whole "xbox on" and "Xbox turn off. Yes" is something I really enjoy. There are certain commands "show my stuff", "friends" "snap activity" etc that are also really natural.

The thing I don't like is when game designers don't think about their game titles - "Forza Motorsport 5" could have had a "Forza 5", and the bing engine is limited to the content in the store and your applications.

I have a few IE favorites pinned (which works well enough). Doubt it'll become a regular for me, but I can see putting some key kids pages (eg: my kids blog) on his stuff so he can access certain things while remaining highly visible.

It'll be interesting to see how Cortana works into all this.

Also, this week is Project Spark's beta!

So, had the weekend with the box and have had a couple of weird little bugs, but in general came away impressed with the system and the TV integration.  Watching football this weekend with the NFL app snapped was pretty awesome.  Changing channels with voice was great as well.

As for the bugs:

1) Had an issue where Dead Rising just acted like it wasn't listening for Kinect voice stuff at all.  If I said XBox, the system responded just fine, but I didn't get the little red or blue microphone thing in the game when you use the voice commands for the menus and such.  Killed the game and restarted it and all was well.
2) Had an issue where achievements wouldn't pop up at all.  I was earning them, but the toaster prompt wouldn't come up.  Even going into standby and starting up again wouldn't fix it.  Had to turn the standby mode thing off, power full down, and then come back up and it fixed.

I am having big issues with the camera seeing me raise my hand to go into the pointer mode.  It seems to recognize my left hand just fine, but was having problems with the right.  Even when it would pull up, it was very wonky with the pointer.  Face recognition seemed to work fine in general, though it had some issues here and there.

I found the right-hand point-and-say in DR3 to act funny initially - then I went into the "kinect didn't recognize me" option and it cleared it up.

I found that I preferred doing the "voice command" rather than "point and say" for my companions was better. Simply aim (left trigger) and say "scavenge", for example.

I'm not talking about pointing for DR3.   I'm talking about using hand motions on the dashboard.  You have issues with that?  I've gone and done the Kinect didn't recognize me thing when it didn't just auto log me in one time.  Maybe I will give it a try if it doesn't seem to do the hand motion navigation correctly, but now that I think about it, when I selected that, it was asking who to log in and I could see that option...would it give me that if I was already logged in?

If it doesn't connect you to your profile, yes. You can be "logged in" but not recognized as yourself.

I had a Clark Kent moment where wearing my glasses (and different lighting) fooled the Kinect. Once I did the "recognize me" function, it's never had that problem again. According to prior statements from MS (no, I'm not digging up links on this) the Kinect will get to know you better, and it doesn't have that silly move and pose routine anymore since it just keeps updating itself to stay in tune with people.

really? You don't need to recalibrate. Simply go to your icon at the top, or say:

"Xbox, sign in"
"I was not recognized"
"Person 1" (or whichever your Gamertag shows up as).

Then select "That is me" or hold up your right hand until your gamerpic is over your head.

It's really quick, and due to the pop in, pop out nature, you can do it at any time. When you do it, it should be gathering more info so it does a better job with the new info added to what it had for you already.

http://www.edge-online.com/features/xbox-why-the-baffling-incompetence-of-the-xbox-one-interface/

This article pretty much sums up my problems with the UI of the XB1.

Quote
This shambling, zomboid clunkiness permeates the entire interface. You have to go into the Games & Apps list to view downloads. Missed game invitations arenít stored, but lost forever. You canít view or manage storage, a spectacularly poor decision given that the 500GB hard drive will be approaching capacity by March. The overall sense is of a design handed over to the team behind the similarly unloved Windows 8 interface, rather than anybody who has used an Xbox 360 regularly or had any familiarity with its strengths.

I don't mind most aspects of it. There are little issues that need some work, but I'm not too worried. Look at how drastically the 360's interface was overhauled over the years - I have no doubt they'll clean it up.

I've been using Windows 8 since launch, however, and I've grown accustomed to Metro. So it's less of a learning curve for me in terms of pinning shortcuts, navigating, etc.

Edge is going to bitch about the Xbox no matter what, though. They've thrown all their support behind the PS4 and they're not looking back. I wouldn't call the UI "baffling incompetence." Needs some tweaks yes, but it's not broken.

I said 'xbox, show notifications' and was able to see a game invite.  I think the reviewer just didn't know wtf he was doing.  It's like the guy who reviewed Forza and marked it down for being tough to drive.  It's a f'n sim racer, not an arcade racer.

Even if he got one thing wrong, the argument is solid - the UI and particularly the party system is a bit of a mess at this point.

this.  I've never missed an invite due to it disappearing, but I have due to the game I was playing (Ryse) apparently not liking the multitasking.

I find that it is anything but solid. The party system works well enough consider the number of times on live you've "lost everyone" when the game ends the match. The party system means you have people who can be called all together and travel through both matches, and even different games without breaking that - the shift in how it works is where the "360 did it better" disconnect happens. I initially thought the same thing, till I did my legwork to find out how it DOES work.

There can also be people in the party which are not playing the same game - well duh you're going to get an invite - but that means you get a notification of the invite, and then not worry about it and keep chatting away. I tend to be one of those people - I enjoy socializing just as much as participating. Too bad Twitch wasn't around - I could just follow the game on a stream. Now THAT would be a fantastic use - allowing party members to "sit one out" but be able to watch - not just by hunting for the stream, but having direct links to shared twitch streams from different members, and being able to engage them directly from the party app.

Also, "Show My Stuff"  has this little globe icon on the top left. Familiar with it? You'll find all kinds of historical events.

There are things that need to be fixed with each of the apps, and you can tell they were putting the tires on the car at the starting line. It seems MS's line is "we're listening" which is probably the best way to handle this situation - even if they already know what they need to fix.

[edited to clarify my twitch comment]

Even if he got one thing wrong, the argument is solid - the UI and particularly the party system is a bit of a mess at this point.

I find that it is anything but solid.

Please, be serious. They took everything that worked well on the 360 and threw it out the window.

So like, take me to dinner? Will it ask me my favorite color?

I have compiled my comments on the first week of using the console, and I've lined up a bunch of criticisms which will be published on the site shortly. There are minor tweaks that are needed-  but to say it's broken? Bah. Party is a virtual couch, and you invite your party into the mp game you're playing.

Makes perfect sense, far more than having a game room, and four party chats. Why try to coral a bunch of people individually? H

ell, this was already the direction they indicated long before launch - being able to fire up a multiplayer game, and watching tv, playing a different game or whatever while waiting for others to hop in before kick off the match.

I just poked at an Xbone display model for the first time.  How does the new Kinect do 3d?  It looked like there was just a single camera lens.

The technology is based on souls, so it's not going to work for you.
