Something we realized while playing last night - you can't talk about the xbox while playing the xbox, because it keeps bringing up the menus smile

So we need to come up with an appropriate code word for the xbox. Something along the lines of "sham-boogie" or "sleestak" might work.

I suggest we pick one of these:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Father of Lies
Sightblinder
Lord of the Grave
Lord of the Twilight
Shepherd of the Night
Heartsbane
Soulsbane
Ba'alzamon
Heartfang
Old Grim
Grassburner
Leafblighter
Father of Storms
Caisen Hob or "Old Hob"
Lighteater

slywink

How about 'Boner? As in," Hey, what do you think of my 'Boner?"
"Looks great, do you mind if I play with it for a while?"

I don't think I understand the offset sticks vs. not-offset sticks debate, possibly because I have no preference on way or another.  I just put my thumbs on the sticks wherever they happen to be.  The angle difference just never registered with me, and the 360 and PS3 controllers always seemed equally comfortable.

What is it that people are debating exactly?  Is it a matter of wrist comfort, directional accuracy, or just an issue of habit?

-Autistic Angel

I'm no orthopedic hand specialist, but the positioning on the XBOX line of controllers is just much more natural when holding something. Rather than ratcheting your left thumb back it just sort of sits where it would be if my hand is relaxed.

If you put your hands in front of you and relax them where are the thumbs? They're more in alignment with the offset sticks than the DS3/4 design...

I got used to the DS3 again playing LoU, but I still find the 360 controller to be far more comfortable with far better button placement...haven't tried either of the next gen ones yet.

Well, I got my free code today after a phone call.  They still haven't sent out my advance replacement yet, but the CS Rep told me to call back on Friday at the earliest if I haven't received a tracking number.  Interested in seeing if Ryse will download as I leave the XB1 on the instant on state.

Well, here are some more impressions of the system after a lot more time with it and the games.

It's a very good, but not great system. As before, my main complaint is the UI. It's needlessly complicated and complex. It really shouldn't be this hard to get around on the system. Also, why is EVERYTHING an app?? I mean come on, settings are an APP? Ugh. I do like the Activity Feed though. It's much better than the "What's New" menu on the PS4.

The exclusive games though, are very good. Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct and Ryse are awesome. I really love Dead Rising 3. It's pretty much worth owning the system for, IMO. The sheer number of Zombies on screen is incredible. I don't like the microtransaction system in Ryse though, or the one that I have heard about in Forza. Come on, I just spend $60 bucks for the game, don't nickel and dime me MS!!!

As for the multiplats, I'm sticking with the PS4 for those. They look better on there and most of my friends are now on the PS4. Still, the XB1 has nothing to be ashamed about on that front. All the games look good, just not quite as good as the PS4 versions look.

Luckily, both my PS4 and XB1 have not had any hardware problems. Thank goodness.

Anyway, I'm happy I got a XB1. Dead Rising 3 makes it all worth it. smile

Hetz I'm with you there.   I'm taking the same strategy about cross console releases. AC4 will be on PS4, NBA2K is on PS4, and Madden is PS4.

The exception I make is COD and multiplayer games I want to play with the usual GT crew. I'll get those on Bone.   Also exclusives obviously.

The interface is a bit bewildering, but there feels like there's more next gen stuff on this box.  The voice commands have worked extremely well for us.   My wife is in love with this feature because she can just say Xbox On and the whole damned system comes up without her having to wrestle with turning them on.  At night she's laying in bed tired and just says Xbox turn off, and boom...everything including the TV and Cable box turns off.

I love that when she walks in the room and starts asking me a question I can just say 'Xbox mute' and boom.... I'm muted without having to pause or find a safe place to recover the remote.

We really need to have some multiplayer DR3 sessions between GTers.      I haven't played it multiplayer yet.

Agreed. I feel the XB1 UI has a huge upside to it. It just kind of feels half-baked to me right now. It has the potential to be incredible and does feel much more "next gen" than the PS4 interface. I do love the voice commands as well, when they work....which is about 80-90% of the time. Of course, YMMV on that...

I am sure MS will refine the interface over the course of the next few years. I mean the 360 interface changed pretty drastically (not all for the better, but that's a different story...) from the original shipping interface, so there is room for quite a bit of optimism on that front.

Not trying to argue superiority of one or the other, but that seems a bit odd if your thumbs are relaxing in different positions. You're essentially proving that it's personal preference and familiarity rather than superiority of one design to another.

Humans are mostly symmetrical, your thumbs should relax at mostly symmetrical angles. If they're not, you may be developing tendinitis. slywink

If anything, there's a specific kind of tendinitis you can get, and which I had, if you keep your thumb up and back too much so that it's flatter, or reaching to an offset stick. But that's also a matter of how you grip the controller overall, and the DS3 had a mediocre grip for most people.

I've said it time and time again, the DS3's problem was most likely its ancient ergonomics and mechanics, rather than something as silly as stick placement. The stick placement just happened to be the thing that was most easily visible, and something around which two factions could polarize around.

Turtle, generally your right thumb is on the buttons (or at least, half the time), which is symmetrical with the left thumbstick.

I think the problem with the DS3/4 is that the sides are |---| whereas the 360/XB1 are /---\, similar to that of the MS natural ergo keyboard design where your elbows, wrists and hands are flared out and maintain a straight-ish line inwards.

Your thumbs, regardless of position on the dpad or LJ, or RJ or ABXY, follow the line of your hand, wrist and forearm better, and thusly feel more "natural". Just mimicking the two positions, I can feel a difference right up to my rotator cuffs and a bit of my chest (granted, I just worked out so "feeling" is elevated at this point).

It's not drastic, it's not horrible, but there is a physiological difference in the controller design. Having your palms face each other is more awkward than them facing inwards. Having your thumbs both extended downwards highlights it further and that, more than the offset nature make the biggest difference (for me).

Figured out party chat stuff - it's better than the Xbox 360 - and before I figured it out, I thought they broke it.

Still haven't found DLNA support. Anyone find it?

Not in completely different spots.  That's why I don't get why people think it is better for this reason.  I would think you would want the thumbs of both hands in the same spot on the controller.  Holding an offset stick controller makes you hold each hand at a different angle.

Actually, you can't control the audio of the streaming music separately, though IIRC it does kill the music track while playing.

In this case, RHCP was drowning out the sounds of DR3, so while it works, it needs work.

No.

360 does this, so does XB1, though there is no volume control.

Sound effects, voices still play, but you can have the music track of a game shut off by firing up the Xbox Music app (snapped or unsnapped). The music plays, the sounds / voices play, but unlike the 360 application it does not let you change the volume of the music to suit your needs.

This is how I played every. version. of. Amped.

Whenever I hear the opening for RHCP's "Otherside" I see the top of the mountain.

Also, I miss Amped 2. 3 notsomuch - they went far too silly.

Was at Target today buying some soap and went by electronics to look at their Skylander selection and behind the counter they had 4 XBox Ones sitting there.  I asked if they were for sale and they were, so bought one.  I guess they had just gotten 6 of them within the last 10 minutes.

Dead Rising 3 and Ryse are both great. Ryse takes some getting used to, but I am loving it now. It took me awhile to stop playing it like God of War and more strategically. Having that mindset really helped out with my enjoyment of the combat system.

Some quick tips : you need to start your own party to invite friends in - and games don't interact with your friends, but instead your own party.

It makes more sense in that regard. Also, party chat is not on by default.

My Xbone experience has been very hit or miss thus far, but today was much more hit for the first time.

Last night I was trying to show it off to some friends and pretty much none of the special things like voice activation or snapping/unsnapping was working well.  Dead Rising 3 was impressive, thankfully, and I ran Youtube and a Blu-Ray more or less without incident.  Voice stuff was haphazard, appearing when I didn't want it, and not working when I did want it.  No luck getting the Xbox On command to wake the system up at all, and yes I double checked my settings and still had to use the Xbox controller to run the Blu-Ray, which was awkward at times when trying to pause and rewind.  While none are deal breakers, these are the kinds of really basic things you'd think M$ would have wanted to nail from the get go if they wanted to show their system off as the clear "one unit" to own the living room.

Today I had a better time.  I *finally* got my Logitech 650 remote (cheapest in the current Harmony line) to work the way I wanted it to (for the most part).  This was totally a Logitech issue (some settings just wouldn't transfer correctly), but again, one would have hoped for a media remote at day one for a system that's meant to tackle multiple forms of media.  Perhaps they trusted too much in their voice commands, but you'd think any form of beta testing would have revealed there would be problems.  I suspect this is partially why Apple hasn't released their rumored new TV; testing with real users likely showed a lot of hit or miss with vocal commands.  (Notice how they bought a motion sensing company from the original Kinect people.)  Anyway, a universal remote is not the easiest thing to work with, but for now I'm hoping it will do.  I've programmed a mix of buttons combining Xbone, receiver and DVR commands, without the need to switch "activities" or devices.  Probably needs more optimization but it's getting there.

I also ended up playing a few hours of 2K14; it's the most time I've spent gaming in one sitting in a long long while.  Just got its hooks in me, plus the timing of having the day off with no commitments and being sick all worked out.  It's not really mind-glowingly "next gen" but certainly very smooth and polished for the  most part.  Will comment on that in the 2K14 thread.

All in all very happy with the Xbone's overall feature set, capabilities and potential, though slightly disappointed at the kind of "beta" state of things.

All in all very happy with the Xbone's overall feature set, capabilities and potential, though slightly disappointed at the kind of "beta" state of things.

yeah, it's  bit rough around the edges.

party chat not being on is bad.

That sounds fixable. Although it does confirm some rumors a while back of serious issues with XB1's party/voice chat system being separate game specific systems. Thankfully it looks like they found a workaround, even if it's odd that it's basically just an on switch. But the simpler it is, that means they can eventually patch it so that switch is always on from the start. Most likely the reason why they didn't just do that was that devs have the old API in place, so they didn't want to break compatibility so close to launch, even if they fixed it.

Yeah, I honestly think they were rushed to market to compete with the PS4 launch. I believe that they were originally targeting a Spring 2014 launch, but had to move that up....hence the sort of beta state of the OS. It will get better (it has too) and the games themselves are very good. Ryse looks better than anything on either console. I mean, it's incredible and the only game on either system to make me say "this is true next gen". I don't know how they did it, but MS needs to let all the 3rd parties know what that team did to make it look so good on the XB1.

I find for every "awesome" experience, there is a niggling bit that needs tuning.

I prefer DR3's Kinect motion to push off zombies to the arbitrary button mash, HOWEVER, if the Xbox hasn't seen you hold the controller before the event it *should* prompt for a button push.

It does sometimes, though if it did not, you need to pause go you your profile and register yourself which isn't hard to do, but a bug in DR3. Otherwise, you die.

Fwiw I'm looking for dr3 coop. If you see me online, shoot me an invite.

Sounds like I need to add Ryse to my Santa list?
