One thing that bothers me abut Xbox Live is the total lack of customizing it.  In other words, I'd love the ability to turn on my 360 and having to worry about my 3 or 5 year old seeing an undead Zombie or something else inappropriate for kids.  If you don't get this, you must not have kids.  We don't have a separate DVD player in the living room, so this is an issue.

There is actually a way to set the dashboard to "family" mode, so it won't show M/R rated material by default.  I think you can do that by going to Settings -> Family and setting a ratings limit there.  You can then go into Privacy & Online Settings -> Customize Content -> Filtering to set all content to the Family filter.

Thank you.  I should have investigated further.  I'll do this tonight.

On a related note, it sounds like (from the MS folks I spoke to at E3) that the initial console power-on will take you through setting your privacy and family setup stuff (similar to the windows 8 questions, but more related to the console, data throughput and data caps).

Has anyone found an accurate list of games that will be out at the same time as release?

yeah, IGN is the one I've been using as a basis to decide what to get on day one.  so far I'm looking at Ryse, Dead Rising 3 and Forza 5 as definites I've already got pre-ordered, and Just Dance 2014 and Killer Instinct as likely contenders.  Madden 25 is a maybe.

other than that there are 5 titles on that list that will be PC buys.

LOL, fittingly I just turned on my Xbox 360 tonight and it prompted me with "Your Kinect is not connected.  etc".  That thing hasn't been connected for probably a year but they just decided now to start checking for that?  The NSA must have prompted them.  slywink

I placed my preorder with  microsoft and also included Forza.  The release date on Forza is listed as December 31 on their site.

Now I just need to decide between BF4 (BF3 REALLY let me down) or COD (They have been pretty crappy too)  Need a shooter to last until Titanfall.  Wish it was a launch title.

Not to mention all previous reports indicate that Microsoft is struggling with low yields for the Xbox One. Increased specs would only make that worse.

Btw, the reason devkits have more RAM is because debug code needs more RAM than release code.

Yep, the rumors of a spec upgrade were just a lot of circular rumor milling originating with one poster on beyond3d posting about the dev kit specs. Almost every other article that says they have "sources" has been shown that they actually referred to that post. There's been some silly people trying to hold to it, also citing sources, but some confirmed XB1 developers have said there will be no upgrade, period. Some B3D posters who are engineers have said it's impossible to upgrade the specs that way so close to release, and some hilariously desperate posts came back at them.

At this point, if you're already getting a PS4, or you have a PC, it's best wait for the inevitable price drop. You can still play the exclusives then. The 360 will still be a decent machine regardless of its specs.

Btw, a confirmed guy from the Xbox One team (he provided proof to the moderators) said on Reddit that the Kinect is about as expensive as the console itself. This likely means that if Microsoft had dropped their silly Kinect requirement, the console could probably have been sold for as little as $349 or even $299. Everyone has been saying that the Kinect is an added $100 to the price of the console, but that seems to not be true at all. The truth is quite a bit more dramatic.

The same guy also confirmed that the PS4 has better specs than the Xbox One. That's not really news, but it's the first time someone from Microsoft has confirmed it in public (even if he's anonymous).

Keep in mind that the new self-publishing stuff from Microsoft is reportedly (by a solid and respected source at NeoGAF) using the App framework for the console. This means that the app will have to fit into the part of memory reserved for the OS (ie. the 3GB part, and it probably won't be able to use anywhere near all of that) and that it won't get access to the more powerful features of the system, instead having to go through the app layer.

The end result is that self-published indie games on the Xbox One are going to be forced to be pretty simple compared to Microsoft-published "indies". Will we be able to see games like Braid this way? Sure. Will we be able to see games like The Witness on PS4? Doubtful.

Not to mention, while MS may allow self publishing, their support for indies is still going to be crap. Everyone who has worked with MS in the past few years has nothing but bad things to say about how they handle things there.

At best, the Skulls of the Shogun people put it this way, it's not that they're bad at their job of supporting indies or out to screw them over, it's that they're literally so inept they can't get it right enough to deliberately try to screw people over to begin with. Skulls probably used the same app framework and marketing/publishing system that MS will force people through. So if that's the market and framework MS is going to push to free up indies, it's not going to work.

It's always bad when your latest big feature reveal is a message your opponent has already played out.

You're welcome! Feels pretty weird, actually. I got one on launch day in 2005 and have had one since (not the same one...if anyone still has a working launch system I'd be surprised).  Then again, my first PS3 died last year as well.

I believe it is. When this rumor started circulating a few weeks ago, it was said that by using the Windows OS part of the Xbox One like they are now doing, these apps will be compatible with both Xbox One and Windows 8.
