one thing about neogaf is they have long ass posts to start threads.

what does 'yield' mean in this context?
Yield is the number of chips that perform to spec and aren't defective.

If the downclocking rumors are true (and that NeoGAF thread seems to indicate that there are a lot of independent sources confirming it), then the RRoD problem is exactly what they're trying to deal with prematurely. RRoD is the least of my worries this generation. Microsoft and Sony both saw how that burned MS with the 360.

I finally got around to reading my April Game Informer, which includes the "Game Infarcer" section that parodies gaming news with outlandish stories.  One of these is called "Microsoft Unveils Next-Gen Plans" -

Quote
The [XBox 360's successor] promises to usher in a whole new world of interactive entertainment.  Netflix and Hulu users will find plenty to love...Social networking remains a focus for Microsoft..."Cloud storage, Pandora, Instagram," recites Mattrick mechanically.  Pinterest, Flixter, Meetup, Pinterest."...Whether or not the system has any gaming capabilities is unknown, but it can be controlled with an iPad, sort of.

They guessed everything but the name slywink

Considering all the issues there were with the 360, and MS's willingness to gamble stability for market share, I think I'll hold off on a ONE at launch and put the money I've been saving ($600 so far!) towards more PS4 games.

Thankfully, I have trustworthy housemates that also want in on the action are pitching in a bit for more games and peripherals, while I own the system.

Was really looking forward to a new Halo and Viva Pinata though. Finally played through my giant backlog of 360 games last year on my housemate's 360 (which then red ringed out of warranty).

Basically, solid info about hardware issues in that thread making me even less likely to get the One at launch.

And now Microsoft has canceled its E3 post-press conference roundtable with the media. There might not be anything sinister about this, but are they really so blind that they don't see what this kind of thing does to their reputation and to the rumor mill?

Nah, MS is getting their due mainly because they're acting just like the Sony did for the PS3's launch. Rushed, unsure of what's what, executives running around like chickens with heads cut off, and those cut off heads randomly babbling contrary bits of information, and with a troublesome hardware spec. Everyone gave Sony and their fans crap for it, and it was justified then.

And don't even try to play the maturity card, because where was that maturity 5 years ago? slywink

So, just take it, and like it, like you will like the awesome games that will come out for both systems. Tongue

Why does any criticism have to be a fanboy war? Are you aware of how arrogant it sounds when you dismiss open discussion and information sharing like that? There is no "fanboy war" on this forum. If you've got information or arguments of your own to share, then share them. Don't just sit on the sidelines and smugly go "oh, those kids and their petty little arguments".

I disagree.  I was a 360 guy for consoles this past generation, and it strikes me as pretty apparent that MS has fallen prey the same arrogance issue that burned Nintendo and Sony in the past.  80-90% of my console game purchases were for 360, and as of right now I think PS4 is the way to go next gen.

You're not helping your argument here. We haven't really been talking about the conference itself for a while, but are now talking about new information that is popping up. And I already explained the other reasons why your statement was puzzling, so I won't repeat them.

Let's say that someone, 4 months before the last US presidential election, said "as of right now I think I'll be voting for Mitt Romney", would you be complaining that it's "way too soon to make that call in any way"? Your response to that question should help you figure out why your comments in this thread may come off as a bit odd. I'd agree that it's too early to place a preorder for any of the consoles, but it's damn well not too early to make up an opinion based on the facts and rumors we do have.

This is really good news for me
Eurogamer

The Xbox One controller can be plugged in via a micro USB cable to preserve battery life, Microsoft has revealed.

Doing so will switch the pad's wireless radios off and send data down the wire instead, a new Xbox.com blog post described, which makes Microsoft's decision to still use batteries somewhat more excusable.

Another improvement is the controller's new low power state, a battery-conserving mode that won't require you to re-sync your pad every time you leave it to become idle.

The controller now uses invisible reflective technology and LEDs to pair the pad with the console and Kinect sensor, which will help track your position in a room.

The data transfer rate between console and controller has also been improved, which will mean better headset audio quality.

A lot of the other features mentioned in the report have already been touted by Microsoft - a redesigned d-pad, textured thumbsticks and a rumble function in the controller's triggers. Just the thing for watching TV.

so my complaint about no wired controllers can be dismissed now thumbsup

sod that last post i posted this is better detailed
http://majornelson.com/2013/06/06/more-details-about-xbox-one-controller/

we already knew some of the details but Major Nelson lists it all here in lovely detail
Quote
Here are some of the highlights of the story:

Impulse Triggers – Xbox One’s Wireless Controller sports four vibration motors – a small one behind each trigger that adds precise haptic feedback to the finger tips, and a larger in each grip for large scale rumbles. This gives users a sense of in-game directionality and depth, creating rich, immersive experiences where gunshots, car crashes and explosions can come to life.

Higher Quality Headset Audio – The data transfer rate between the controller and console has been improved, allowing for higher fidelity audio in communication headsets. In-game chat over Xbox Live, according to the team, will be in many cases clearer than talking on a phone.

Revamped Thumbsticks – The thumbsticks are built for precision and comfort. They’re smaller and outlined with a knurled texture for better grip. Competitive gamers will be pleased to hear the sticks require 25 percent less force to move, allowing you to adjust your aim in a first-person shooter or execute a half-circle sweep in a fighting game faster and more accurately. The controller also uses advanced electronics that reduce thumbstick deadzone in the center.

Brand New D-Pad – The old Xbox 360 D-pad is replaced by a new design that pays homage to classic controllers and is architectured to deliver more precision and tactile feedback for gaming. The D-pad’s cross shape is honed to provide accurate cardinal direction input, sweeping movements and combinations – important factors for sports and fighting games, and other experiences.

Buttons, Buttons, Buttons – The A, B, X and Y buttons are lower to the controller with tighter spacing, making the transition between each one smoother. A new, three-step manufacturing process gives these buttons a more premium look, as if the letters on them are suspended in 3-D space. The size and placement of the Xbox button has also changed so the view and menu buttons are more accessible.

Seamless Connectivity – Each controller uses a combination of invisible reflective technology and LEDs to send a patterned infrared signal to your console and Kinect sensor. Not only does this make pairing the devices seamless, but it enables Kinect to associate the controller with whoever is holding it. This introduces innovative experiences, such as player switching, where a split screen display can swap positions on the TV if users change seats on the couch.

Low Power State – If you’re watching a movie or need to step away from the TV, the controller enters a low power state that conserves your battery. The moment you pick it up again, it will be ready for use without having to resynch with the console.

Refined for Comfort – The controller’s design is deliberately honed to the closest tenth of a millimeter to offer the most comfortable fit in users’ hands, and was tested extensively by a broader age group than ever before to ensure it is optimized for as many people as possible. According to the team’s research, this improves gameplay performance and allows comfortable gaming for longer periods of time.

Angled Triggers and Bumpers – The triggers and bumpers are carefully designed for performance and comfort. The specific angling allows for a natural fit for your fingers, and the triggers require a lighter pull, so squeezing it repeatedly is an easier and more precise action.

Internal Battery Cavity –The compartment that houses AA batteries is built into the interior of the controller, providing more room at the bottom for your fingers to grip. Another convenient improvement is that the controller is both wireless and a wired– simply plug it into your console with a mini USB cable and the connection automatically switches to preserve battery life

They still have their one-on-ones though, so they aren't totally boycutting the press. But it IS weird, I agree.

They've started canceling these now as well.  Patrick Klepek of Giantbomb just had his cancelled.

And now Microsoft has canceled its E3 post-press conference roundtable with the media. There might not be anything sinister about this, but are they really so blind that they don't see what this kind of thing does to their reputation and to the rumor mill?

Missed this. Yeah, that's probably a bad move.

Here's the important part:

Quote
•Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.  Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

•Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers.  Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners.

As we move into this new generation of games and entertainment, from time to time, Microsoft may change its policies, terms, products and services to reflect modifications and improvements to our services, feedback from customers and our business partners or changes in our business priorities and business models or for other reasons.  We may also cease to offer certain services or products for similar reasons.

So basically what they are saying is that resale or gifting is entirely up to the individual publisher, and there will be no renting at launch. I'm not entirely clear if trading with people not on your friends list could even work in this model. Without a consistent plan among publishers, it sounds like it's going to be a complete mess.

So long Gamefly sub.  Also, how do you sell your game on eBay?  No longer supported?

So if it's now up to the publisher, what incentive is there for them to allow used resale of their games?

Wow, Sony is getting the next generation served up to them on a silver platter, if they are smart about it. Then again, it's Sony so I expect them to blow this opportunity somehow.
