Giving this more thought I just don’t know how much I like MS new direction with this box.  That’s an incredible amount of user data MS will be able to collect about my gaming, surfing and TV habit.  I know other companies are collecting and selling that date (Google), but MS will have a treasure trove of information about users habits.

probably no less than what we get from the cameras in your place.  seriously, pink boxers?

I'm not sure why everyone is so upset about lack of backwards compatibility.  SNES came out and didn't play NES games, and it didn't wait 7 years to come out either, right?

Not super happy with these recent revelations about no BC and the disc trade thing.

The second one doesn't actually affect me that much, as I don't go in for the used game thing too often anyway.  But I see that as a really boneheaded move, and it makes me concerned for what else they're screwing up.

No BC is not surprising, of course, but it is an issue for me and will have an effect.

I'm holding out final judgment until E3, as this was clearly a presentation for non-gamers (I don't know what folks were expecting, frankly) and investors.  Of course, Engine's NASDAQ chart showed that last part didn't go so well.

It's not going so well for me, either.

Because that was over 20 years ago? Things change.

Right now I am really thinking unless MS drops some serious exclusivity bomb during E3 (Naughty Dog bought by Microsoft Game Studios big) I will buy the PS4 and play other stuff on PC while I wait and see on XBO. Even if Sony comes down with this same used fee (which some are expecting), I'll at least get Sony exclusives. If live TV is anything like the FiOS app on 360 I've got no interest at all. And it must be, right? There's no cablecard slot or coax input on the thing.

And at least I'll get to play with Leo slywink

Yeah i have heard people are expecting the same used fee thing for the PS4,but surely if they were smart they would not have it now, especially as there is a lot of disappointed people all over the net over this whole presentation

always Online optional for Xbox1 devs

Quote
According to a hands-on report in Wired, developers can make games that use Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service, "which means that they might be able to offload certain computing tasks to the cloud rather than process them on the Xbox One hardware itself".

Such a game would necessitate online connections, but Xbox Live director Marc Whitten said there is no obligation on developers to implement these features.

"I hope they do," he added.

Whether Microsoft will insist that its development partners and internal studios apply 'always online' tech is not clear, for now.

I guess that answers my question about the lack of coax. Keeps getting worse and worse.

Well, then there's this:
Quote
Last year, Nintendo’s new Wii U console delivered some television tuner functionality, but it was a kludgy and fragile experience, and many users (like me, with my cablecard-equipped TiVo) were shut out. Xbox One will utilize a few different methods to deliver live TV to the Xbox universe. Chief among those—at least in the US—is HDMI pass-through, in which the cable box, satellite box, or similar device (e.g., the aforementioned cablecard-equipped TiVo ) connects directly to the Xbox One, which then passes the mediated signal to the television via an HDMI-out port.

Definitely need more info.

eurogamer update on used games thingy

Quote
Update: Microsoft has addressed the issue of Xbox One second-hand games... sort of. When asked about the possibility of trading or buying pre-ordered games on the console's official FAQ, Microsoft said, "We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We'll have more details to share later."

We're not sure what that means exactly, but we're following up with Microsoft and hope to find out more.

Yes, you can trade in or resell games, but the person buying that game will have to pay a price - the statement does nothing to contradict what people are reporting.

yup...and the price for used games is a lot of times not that much cheaper for the big games, and then the second charge for unlocking it on your account(whatever that may be),you may as well buy new

I am still expecting their subscription price thing(perhaps $200+12/24 monthly payments)..which i wouldn't mind too much,as long as it was the same model Xbox and not like an 'arcade style 360'

I was also really surprised they really glossed over the social features - they made a very quick mention regarding making gameplay highlights, but nothing approaching Sony's presentation on their share button or the ability to spectate other people's games, which I thought were very fun features.

I'd be surprised if they went ahead at that cheap, even with additional payments unless they were $15-$20 a month.  however, I'd probably go that route just because.

That's the beauty of it. It lets you go in after the fact and pick and choose between gameplay snippets that show you off at your best, even if you hadn't planned on recording anything at all. Even you can look good with this feature... barely. Tongue

Next Gen XBL details

Quote
Xbox One players will be able to install games in "segments", allowing them to start playing before the full game is downloaded. Automatic background downloads and updates will also feature, doing away with annoying update prompts when you start a game.

New matchmaking tech MS calls "Smart Match" will give you an estimated wait time on finding other players in a multiplayer game, and allow you to engage in other activities while you wait, such as watch TV or Skype.

The new system will also track your skill levels more accurately to find you equally-capable opponents. "On Xbox One, your Xbox Live reputation fundamentally matters and helps you find the best match based on skill, game style and language for a deeper online multiplayer gaming challenge," says the PR.

A 'Game DVR' feature will let you capture gameplay footage and post highlights to your Xbox Live profile - seemingly similarly to the PS4's 'Share' button functionality.

The firm also claims that games will use the cloud to "evolve and learn from actual players, letting you play against your friends' shadow" and that "dynamic, living worlds evolve and improve the more you play", although nothing of this was demonstrated at the reveal event.

Existing Xbox Live Gold memberships will "seamlessly carry over to Xbox One", says MS, and every gamer will have access to cloud storage space for profile and game data saving.

Gamerscores will also carry over from Xbox 360 to Xbox One, and a new Achievements system will feature new social elements that let you share your accomplishments with friends. "An expanded achievements system captures videos of gameplay and continues to grow achievements over time," explains the platform holder.

So there is some info from Wired (I'd have to locate it) that there is some way to deactivate the game on the original system so the new person doesn't have to pay. We'll have to wait for details.

Also, TV is so hard. I don't even know how we do it:

EDIT: the best part about this is that she (a writer at Gamespot) was being totally sarcastic but someone at MS didn't realize it.

Looking at the back of the console, there is at least two HDMI ports. It may be that you can still use your sky box as a video feed into your console, and your TV never has to change inputs.

edit: The whole channel listing stuff, that's probably going to require the addn'l hardware/supported cable box / DVR device.

Agreed. I wonder if the Xbox One (what does that name even mean? It's not the first Xbox. I liked "Xbox Infinity") will even work without Kinect?

I've never wanted Kinect, and I still don't. Screw MS for trying to force it on me.

Agreed. I wonder if the Xbox One (what does that name even mean? It's not the first Xbox. I liked "Xbox Infinity") will even work without Kinect?

nope.  not sure if it was posted here or elsewhere, but I saw something saying it required the kinect.

the live media on the 360 is no use to me,they never have subtitles i would rather just switch HDMi ports and watch my SKY+ box and have my subtitles..I am guessing this is the same for Xbox One(<<do i have to keep calling it that?)

Looking at the back of the console, there is at least two HDMI ports. It may be that you can still use your sky box as a video feed into your console, and your TV never has to change inputs.

so the exact same feed will be through the Xbox?,and be able to use the Sky Remote control to change channels/turn subs on then?..that makes me a little happier, but it all depends on the 'extras/pop up stats' otherwise i will probably just stick to changing Hdmi ports on my TV(its only two button presses)
