I would say wait until we see actual real information before panicking.

As for mandatory installs, assuming it will be handled correctly with near-instantly playable streaming installs that will probably only be a good thing for the user experience in the long run.

Keeps getting worse

If a fraction of these rumors are true, I'm guessing our next 5 years of multiplayer fests will occur on the PS4.

DROVES will abandon M$ and go with Sony.

Hold on there. WHAT bothers you about this?

The only thing that article confirms is that the next gen Xbox won't play games OFF THE DISC ITSELF.

PS3 has done that NEVER (for PS3 games).

As to the always on - always online as an online strategy isn't any different than PS4.

" the Durango will feature "Always On, Always Connected" online connectivity. "

Yeah, that doesn't mean you need to have internet access to play. If you're talking System Link going away as a means to drive customers away, you're delusional.

There is NO confirmation in any of that that suggests DRM (but who cares, except pirates who find it challenging anyways) or that this will be used as a step to destroy used games. Frankly, they have a model in place that makes devs and MS money, so worrying about speculation from such a reliable article is hogwash.

I hope the rumours about Microsoft revealing their next xbox in April(end of) are true, but i have a feeling it wont be that soon and will probably be E3 now(which i was hoping they would use for new games)

As Roman says, yes i am worried by these rumours, but until MS properly announce it i wont get myself worried yet

Also how would they announce that though?would they tell us when they are showing off the new Xbox that it wont play Used games or you have to be always connected?,that can't be good for a presentation

You're wrong. The PS3 has never, ever, required installs for its games. A lot of games (particularly multiplatform) install anyway since the PS3's Blu-Ray drive is so slow, but it's no requirement. Games like the Uncharted series play directly from disc. Many others either install nothing at all, or give you the option of install to reduce loading times. Others again force installs, but these are by developer choice, not Sony's.

It would be nice if you didn't "shout" out stuff like that as if those you are talking to are stupid, when in truth it is you who haven't done your research.

what I think our untamed companion is trying to say is that the PS3 has never given the option to totally install the game and therefore not need to read from the disc while running, like the 360 currently does.  and please, point those fans in the other direction, as his stench is wafting over this way.

There are games on PS3 that REQUIRE install. The 360 does not - they got lambasted for releasing HDD-less systems, remember?

I'm not saying that the PS3's games ALL run from disk, but there has ALWAYS been a requirement for all PS3's to have a hard drive - and there are some games that absolutely cannot be run from disc.

We're talking about the concept of "absolutes" here - and while the PS4 and Durango may well always require a local install going forward - is this a bad thing? PC's have been been doing it for decades.

I know that there are a few retail games IIRC that DO require the Xbox 360 HDD...although for the life of me i can not remember which they are,i think it started happening in the last year or two for a few games out there

It has a logo saying 'Official Microsoft Xbox 360 HDD required'(or something like that) on the front cover of the game at the bottom inbetween the age certificate and the developers logo

I am unsure whether that means you have to install the game to HDD or it needs it for something else,as i always install all my games i am currently playing anyway

EDIT: actually, thinking about it,it maybe a game that has 2 discs, but only content on the second disc(you don't actually play that second disc)...like Forza..or Halo 4,maybe

but separate from them,i know FF11 needs a HDD for obvious reasons Tongue

What are you trying to prove? I clearly pointed out that some games force installs by developer initiative, but the PS3 itself never forces it. The developers can choose whatever solution suits them best. What is the difficult part to understand here?

The PS3 specification is that every console had a hard drive - the 360 was bewilderingly opposite in that they didn't want to force the cost of a HDD onto every consumer so they could bring in a lower price point.

That article states absolutely nothing, other than that their sources have confirmed games will not run directly off the discs. That's not a bad thing - think of wear and tear on moving parts, drive noise, seek times, etc. Moving the app (or at least key functional components) isn't a bad thing, and people getting up in arms on a sensationalized piece of crap someone decided to call "news" is ridiculous. That word is used far too often in common vernacular, so let me be clear: I mean "deserving of ridicule".

There is nothing else in that article that isn't speculation or panic-button-pressing to save someone's job at IGN, and nothing that actually amounts to any reason for concern.

Technically installs weren't required by Sony.

However, for all practical purposes, there were many games that required an install due to the choice of a slower bluray drive.

I suspect there will be more installs coming in the next generation, since to fill up that 8 GB of memory there's going to have to be a lot of data loading. However, the tech will be such that most developers will stream to drive using streaming to hard drive while the game is running off disc, then delete itself later.

well i am happy about this if it turns out to be true

Next Gen Xbox controller near identical to 360 controller

They say it will be near identical, but a little smaller

Quote
Aside from being 'a little smaller' in overall size, the new controller apparently features the same twin-analogue setup and button layout, including the centrally-positioned Home button, analogue triggers and d-pad.

The new Xbox controller is also said to be void of any new input mechanics, unlike the Wii U, which has a touch screen, and the PS4's DualShock 4, which will feature a touchpad, lightbar, speaker and numerous other new features.

well you have to realise, that the new Twisty D-pad is the norm for new controllers now,so i would of thought it would be that, and i have heard that makes a ton of difference to the 360 D-Pad

Unless of course, you had that D-Pad in mind when you made your comment icon_biggrin

this part made me laugh:

Quote
Kotaku also reports that Microsoft has covered its next-gen Xbox hardware prototypes in black and white-stripped patterns, possibly to deter leakers as each one could contain a slightly different - and, crucially, traceable - pattern.

apparently they've never heard of paint or permanent markers icon_lol

Xbox 720 specs will be "aligned" with PS4, Ubisoft dev claims

Quote
Although he understandably would not be drawn on specifics, Ubisoft Montreal's Jean-Francois Boivin has told Eurogamer that Microsoft’s new machine "aligned with what Sony announced", adding that: "It's going to be connected. It's going to be social. It's going to be immersive. It's going to be interactive."

note he doesn't say anything about the inner workings, so saying it is 'aligned' is very open to interpretation.

When will people learn not to go into ultra defensive mode on twitter when they represent a company like that... What a child, with bad analogies. Also not surprising to see Arthur Gies out there being his usual half retarded self on this, if I worked at Polygon I would be angry enough with him to quit, talk about making your whole company look bad.

Geez, I see a retraction coming from this, dude.  I can imagine that MS probably not to happy about this.  While I understand dude opinion. I rarely turn off my PC. Microsoft really seems to have learned nothing from the Ps2 to Ps3 transition and have gone full arrogance mode just like Sony did then.  It's early but the PS4 is looking like the better option next gen.   The ps4 seems to correct a lot of ps3 mistakes focusing on community and being developer friendly.  The indie scene specifically seem to have nothing but good things to say about Sony and are full of pure vitriol when discussing Microsoft

Wow, what role reversal on the verge of the next gen.

However, we know MS isn't going to make as bad a hardware screw up as Sony did last gen, but never did I think MS would be the one known for less developer and customer friendly console launches.

It's funny because for this gen I owned both a PS3 and a 360.  My preference in the early days was to buy games on the 360.  Then as the dashboard became more and more sluggish and more and more filled with ads, even though I am paying them a yearly fee for Gold, and as the PS3 got better and better over time (I pay for PS+ and actually feel like it offers some value), I started buying games for the PS3 if they were multiplatform.  Now that Sony has gone away from cell for the PS4, I really think that it levels the playing field for multiplatform titles.  I rarely turn on my 360 anymore and just the other day as my Gold subscription was about to renew, I realized...why do I even pay for this?  So, I am letting it drop and due to rumblings about how horrible MS has been with regards to developers and how arrogant they seem to have gotten (kind of like Sony after the PS2), I actually think I will only be buying a PS4 for next gen.

The reason I had both platforms in the past was to make sure I didn't miss out on platform exclusives.  However, it seems like more and more that exclusives are getting rarer and rarer and really the only two I much cared about for XBox were Halo and Gears of War.  To be honest, I don't even care about them that much and could easily have lived never having played them.  There are lots of Sony exclusives that I could not do without.

That being said, I am not sure if the general consumer cares about these kinds of issues and I think MS has the momentum for sure, so not sure they will see the fall Sony saw for the PS3.

With that weak statement I'm not sure why they bothered to respond at all.

Better to say something (as long as it's non-offensive) than to say nothing at all.
