I'd be all-in for a classical Greece era Total War. Love the period. Since they usually have the campaign periods span at least 2 centuries, they could have it end with Alexander. I loved Rome:TW, but I usually played other factions than the Romans, because I am more for the Diadochoi period than the rise of Rome itself.
And please. if it is ancient Greece, lets have tactical naval battles.

There are rumors popping up on TWCenter and other places about leaks that point to the new game being a Shogun remake. If that's true, the helmet picture leaked has me confused. I guess we'll know in a few weeks, but this was not what I was hoping for. I enjoyed the first Shogun because the game system was unique, not because of the setting.

They already did an Alexander expansion to Rome, which would have been my first guess for their next game based on the Greek looking helmet. They could do a Spartan/Athens game, with the option to play as the Persians, amongst many other options. It might be fun to recreate Thermopylae.
TW: Rome was awesome, despite some of the buggy AI (city sieges were a joke). I loved that game, and played a ton of it. I used to get chills hearing the general speeches before battle.
I never played ETW, mostly because I'm just not into the Napoleonic era. Once I started hearing about the brain dead AI, I passed on that one...even though I've owned all of their previous games (and played a ton of Rome, Medieval 2 and Shogun).

Well, there goes the tactical gameplay One particularly novel development is the introduction of hero units. These are warriors who have perfected a fighting art and can carve their way through enemy armies without much trouble at all. Based on mythologized historical figures like the warrior monk Benkei, hero units are a nearly unstoppable force on the battlefield, capable of holding bridge crossings against entire armies, or smashing through a battle line to engage the enemy general. (Emphasis mine) http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/109/1093664p1.html Now, its your hero against them....

The Japanese are unstoppable-just look at how they tore through the Winter Olympics I haven't bought a Total War game since the original Medieval but I might actually get this one considering that I missed out the firs time around and I'm living in Japan. Of course with CA's reputation for putting out shitty, buggy games which never end up getting patched properly before they start on the next instalment I won't be getting this one until it hits the Steam bargain bin.

Though a lot of DoW fans screamed "sell out" when Hero Units became DOW2's focus (as I understand it anyway).

Well, you can buy the units needed to stop the Japanese guy via DLC. I've not heard of a mythologized Japanese historical figure who did all his killing on horseback - the heroes did their best work fighting on foot. So you could try baiting the hero with mounted units and watch as he tires himself out trying to catch them, and then move in for the kill when he's exhausted.

I'm really pleased with their decision to go back over Shogun. I've always been fascinated by this period of Japanese history...the politics, the battle dress, the combat tactics, the architecture, and so forth.
I'll be getting it without a doubt...but will it live up to the gameplay of TW:Rome or TW:M2? I really hope so.

Still, why not go to China instead? The Chinese civil war had more variety both with units and landscape.
I hope China is up next after Shogun.

China would be cool. They could make a tutorial campaign with Sun Tzu as the adviser. His sayings practically cry out to be used in both the strategic and tactical maps.

Is it me or did the AI troops in that battle report scale the walls as if they weren't even there? In other musings, Japanese castle gates would usually open into an easily defensible inner courtyard, so I wonder if - as the defender - it would be better to just open the gates and goad the enemy into running through them rather than closing the gates and covering all possible walls?

The spec for this puts it out of range for me. I'll meet the minimum, but I 've learned from the past that you don't want to be much below the recommended for any Total War game. It might just be me, but IMO pre-order perks aren't really appropriate for a strategy game like Total War.
