No NFL license = not much interest from me.

Well that's a bit one sided view of it.  Tecmo Bowl isn't a realistic football sim, let alone an NFL sim.  It's supposed to be a fun american football game that anyone can get into.  Probably pretty arcade-like and I think it's really about time someone made another game of that type.

But... the original console Tecmo Bowl didn't have an NFL license either.  They just used the teams' cities and if I remember correctly, only referred to the players by number.

I'm pretty sure it had the license.  I know it used all the players names (Bo Jackson FTW), and I think you saw a picture of each teams helmet (including logo) when you picked your team.

Doing these ridiculous superhuman things with real players was what made it so fun.

The Originial Tecmo Bowl, did not have the NFL license, it had licensed player names like Bo Jackson, but it only used City Names.

Tecmo Super Bowl was the first in the series with the NFL Shield.  Subsequent games were also fully licensed titles.

Tecmo Bowl's appeal was the simplicity of control and interface, and then the awesome things you could do when your team was feeling good. 90 yard bomb passes, 100 yard runs, block every field goal attempt and punt. Stuff like that.

The game doesn't need the NFL license as much as it needs to stick to what made Tecmo Super Bowl so awesome.

So you're saying it needs BO JACKSON?

I completely agree.

I don't know if I'll be getting this. I tried the original on VC and I wasn't very impressed with it. I'm not worried by the lack of official NFL license just that it needs better gameplay than the original for me to buy it.

They make a solid semi-arcade football title that's fun just like classic Tecmo Bowl action (Super Tecmo Bowl III 4LIFE!!!!), and I'm all over it. I couldn't care less if it has the NFL license or not.

It's definitely a game that either you grew up playing or you didn't.  I would also say that the original Tecmo Bowl is inferior to Tecmo Super Bowl.  I have extremely fond memories of Tecmo Super Bowl II, as well.

For me, the only thing I want is the classic gameplay.  I can deal with not having real players, but I want to be able to have the same fun that I did with the original.  That's all.

I loved Tecmo Bowl and Super Tecmo Bowl. I had a lot of late nights playing those with friends. One of the two had a San Franciso team play that was unstoppable. I think it was a slant to Rice. We had a house rule that nobody could play them.

This month's EGM mentioned a Wii version in development too. I wonder how that will turn out as it is supposedly a 3d reimagining of Tecmo Super Bowl.
