Holy cow there are a lot of random battles in this game. I was getting kind of frustrated with it last night. Every 2 steps, it seemed.

Can someone explain how the the support abilities work? I have linked up some support abilities to Zidane and even got enough ability points to learn them, but I can't figure out how to use them. The are equipped in the setup screen, but when I go to abilities in battle I only get the other ability type showing up.

Some are passive, some are active.  A lot of Zidane's abilities are passive (like Protect Girls and the like).   If you have the weapon or equipment equipped that has the skill then you can use it as long as you have enough AP to enable the skill.  Once you gain enough experience for the weapon then you can always equip the skill (again provided you have sufficient AP) even if you no longer use that piece of equipment.

So...they are just add an automatic benefit? One I have is supposed to do more damage against beasts (and I have the protect girls one as well).

Exactly- as long as it's enabled you will get the benefit.  AP can get pretty tight at times though so you'll end up switching the abilities you have equipped depending on the types of enemies you'll be fighting, who is in  your party, etc.  But that's farther in the game.  Early on you probably have enough AP to activate most of the abilities you get.

Vagrant Story is awesome.  But it's also very esoteric and can take a while to figure out its various subsystems.

Make sure you watch the attact mode segment (leave the game on the main menu until you get a story scene)- it provides a lot of story background that you don't get in the game itself.

thanks for that KG,will do..and yeah its slow going figuring a lot of the stuff out,i was surprised when a big sphere popped up when i was in combat...doesn't help that there are no Instructions, not that i usually use them though

i was quite surprised that the game is only 93mb..and then had a nice cutscene at the beginning of the game icon_confused

Someone over in NeoGaf who lived in the US alluded to buying games off the UK PSN successfully. As I mentioned in a different thread, I think simply importing a UK PSN card would be all that it takes. After all, if you create a UK account all the demos are immediately available for download. The hitch to buying games is that the address section for country code is locked out as "United Kingdom". This immediately thwarts using a credit card, and PSN cards are only good on networks that use the same currency.

So UK PSN card=success?  I will be trying it out soon, because the UK network has Vagrant Story, Pirates! and Mytran Wars. I want all of these for my PSP Go.

i actually asked above if anyone bought it and played it,not because of me,i have the PS1 version still...but i was asking for Myto,as i have been trying to get her to play this.....i know full well she will think Vivi is a blast, and ever since we played FF11 together i have been bugging her about the PS1 trilogy

Quote from: Farscry on June 18, 2010, 12:46:42 PM

Myto hasn't played through FFIX?

MYTO! Get downloading! It's one of the best FF games!

I just finished an email to Metal where I actually found myself saying that I might move FFIX up to the front of my backlog list. Then I checked this thread again, and the more I read here, the more I think I'll do just that.  The only question remaining is if I finish Monster Hunter Tri before I start FFIX.  I guess I'll let the games decide - I'll see if I can figure out the FFIX DL now and set it in motion;  later, after I play MH for awhile, I'll check out the start of FFIX, and the rest will be fate.  icon_twisted

i was just about to reply to your email, when you asked if FF9 was hard

the fact that you played the living hell out of games like Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery,FF12 more than i did...all the bonus dungeons etc..persona 3 as well?..and saved my ass in FF11 nearly everyday-i was stupid and young and wanted adventure..and got careless!! paranoid

FF9 may be a walk in the park for you...it can get tricky if i remember rightly after the first hour or so

Spoiler for Hiden:
in the forest, getting used to things..and that monster you can't hit Vivi or Dagger,in fact you have to keep giving them potions so they survive
someone else click on that and confirm

but after that, its just fun,fun,fun...lots of mini games(no where near as FF7 though)..oh and the card game i think is the same which was in FF11...although we couldn't play that because it wasn't on the 360 icon_confused

one more note-is that this of the PSOne trilogy is the funniest as well,i had some good LOL moments with this, while the other two are more serious(defo number 8 is the glumest)

i know i have been bugging you since we first met ..but still

<<that you haven't played it icon_lol

Yeah, they've had for six months or so.  Very bizarre that it hasn't had a NA release as well.

i can see this lasting all of 5 minutes with me

most confusing game ever

Don't feel too bad about being confused, Metal - I will always beat you in that department, in any game.  Friday night - or actually 4 or 5AM Saturday morning - I posted here, all about my adventures with downloading and starting FF9...

Then I hit a wrong button (or two), didn't notice it, and "posted" here... or not, as I just found out.  I guess playing Monster Hunter until the early morning did my already-poor cognitive abilities no good at all!

The bottom line is I will be trying to finish Monster Hunter Tri first, because the silly ass-backwards Nintendo controller has re-programmed my brain... I was even having trouble DL'ing FF9, because I kept hitting the A button instead of the B (or is it the other way around?)  Yeah, color me confused.   saywhat

But I am a woman of my word - I will give FF9 a good long try, right after MH3 - all of you can't be wrong about that game, lol!

i was playing Vagrant Story yesterday and it has the Metal Gear Solid syndrome....where Japanese think that the 'yes' or 'Okay' button is Circle on a dualshock...it should be X!!!!....a million and one times in MGS i have pressed X button meaning to progress or accept and its gone back, because i should of pressed the circle button...annoying as hell

anyway, give me a shout when you actually start the game,as i will start the game as well...i am quite excited to be going back actually

will you be using a guide Myto?...although the main story can be pretty straight forward, there are smaller quests, eg finding all the knights of Pluto near to the beginning of the game.

i would say it(or at least most) can be done without a guide, but its always nice having the info there

anyway this calls for some screenshot posting to excite me more

I've had the same issue in some older games, what a pain to remember that OK and Cancel are ass-backwards.  disgust

Sometimes you can actually remap the keys to get it back to the 'right' way. From what I recall it can be kind of buried in the options, don't know if that's true for Vagrant Story or not.

I'm going to assume that the game has been around long enough that there will be a ton of info on the 'Net about it.  I haven't checked yet, but if there aren't at least a dozen FAQs and Walkthroughs, I'd be amazed.  Besides, I have you!   icon_twisted

Huh! That's interesting, I thought that it was only a problem with a Nintendo controller vs. Any Other Controller... I had no idea that it might be Japan vs. ummm... everyone else?  Or just vs. North Americans and Europeans?

All I know is that "On" and "Off" means - ON and OFF - in a variety of applications, machinery, and countries.  Why can't the A button mean "Action" or "Okay" - and the B button mean "Back" or "Cancel" - isn't the video game industry trying to be more inclusive these days?  Imo, they really need to talk to each other and correct the situation, or at least allow a 3rd party company to produce a controller that would allow players to change these controls!  Are you listening, Nintendo? Mad Catz?  Nyko?  Anyone?

hmm yeah thinking about that Myto,i think the DS has A and B(and Y and X) button in the opposite places i would of had them i think(comparing say to the 360 controller)...i must of gotten used to it on that

and yeah i think it is a Japanese thing,NA and EU are usually the same...not seen this issue ever pop up on a 360 Japanese game though,so maybe its as Monkey says and its just the older games

remember that FF9 is a PS1 game...and if remembering that i am gonna bet that you will be quite impressed with some of the cutscenes(and the usual summon cutscenes...as you just witnessed for FF13-i remember your email saying how impressive the summons cutscenes were in that)..i still am

So I've been out of the PSP scene for a while. I was thinking of grabbing a reurbed PSP1000 from Gamestop for $100 - will I be able to download and play from a memory stick with that model? I see Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX, I am dying to replay these!

I may go the same route, I haven't decided yet (still buried in MH Tri).  The PSP controls used to bother my thumbs after awhile, but with a classic turn-based game, that might not be as big of a deal.  Plus, I've never been able to play two different console games, being too confused by the changing controller layouts between games.  I have been able to play a handheld and a console game during the same time period though, with the 360 and the DS, anyway.  Hmmm...

yeah there is no real fast action to need fast reactions or anything i don't think

you just need to make selections, but if i remember rightly the action does still go on while you make the selections,so you may need to hurry(i think, someone confirm)

oh,and you need to move about in the towns and world map, again, nothing you need to have fast reactions for

Yeah, it's ATB, so it requires you to be a little more on the ball than an absolute turn-based setup. Although I believe the default is for the action to pause if you select the spell or item menus.

I've been playing through this and really been enjoying it despite the outdated graphics. It hasn't been too difficult so far, but I'm not really enjoying this pattern of tossing bosses at you when you least expect it.

hmm,not sure if its the same, but i just tried playing Final Fantasy 9 via remote play with my PSP(Disc was in the PS3)..it looked awful, very small screen black bars not just top and bottom, but left and right as well(nearly 50% of the PSP screen)...rather play it with full use of the screen,so i am gonna be playing it on my PS3

i think FF9 was the first that if you aren't leveled up enough for the upcoming area, they throw more than the usual random battles at you...if you are at a decent level the random battles are thrown at you normally..i remember i was trying to get above the level you needed and i would be running around for ages trying to find a fight

Remote Play degrades the image significantly in comparison to actually playing on the PS3 or playing directly from the PSP. It is like that for all games.

Yeah, I tried Remote Play with FF9 a few years ago and the blurriness made the text almost illegible.

hmm,i didn't notice the blurryness...just the very small screen, infact the cutscenes were really nice and smooth..not sure about text

this is how i was hoping it would be(yes i know its FF7)

it ended up more like this but the bars at the top and bottom were bigger,so you only had a shitty small screen in the center

so,is there a way to use the full screen?

EDIT:okay with my fantastic Photobucket skills i have done it to how big the screen is

Yes, there should be an option with four or five screen size options under the Home or Start key, from what I recall. Just checked - Home / Other Settings / Screen Mode. I ended up going 'Full Screen'.

thanks Monkey, gonna check that out now

EDIT:when the game is playing..i press Home and a blue/turquoise/gray/that's not a colour!! see through screen comes up with the options
PS Button/Quit Remote play/Settings/Connection status...the setting s in this list are just for Assign Buttons and Communication Settings

however if i select PS Button from that first menu its like i have pressed the PS button on the dual shock...and there is other settings

however there is only 1 option in those other settings and that is for smoothing on or off

it maybe a PAL vs NTSC thing, not sure

as i say,i will just stick to the PS3

There definitely should be more settings- you can adjust bitrate and a few other things.  It's a been a year or so since I've used Remote Play so I forgot how to access those settings.

yeah i think i am gonna have to replace mine..so weird that it just stopped charging...sure its old now,but TBH,i haven't really used the PSP that much overall(only just realised yesterday i could go online with it...and downloaded that Digital Comics thing)

and the hinges on my DS gave way last week(i can still open and close it,but there is no resistance now in the hinges,so they just flop open and shut)

think i will wait for the next gen PSP and DS
