So, what exactly was the problem before, anyway? PS2 games looked too 'sharp' before or something? What did the patch 'do'?

Yeah, I turned on my PS3 last night to see what was new and got the update.  You certainly can't fault Sony in the area of support, that's for sure.

got it - very nice! i know 'backward compatible' fans are (supposedly) in a minority, but it was a big reason i got a ps3 (so much ps2 stuff i haven't played / yet to be released, so little room for multiple consoles), & i'm very happy to see it now fully integrated...

Great news.  This issue was one of the blocks standing between me and a PS3 so it's nice to see it removed.  Now only if they could fix the scaling stuff....

This is awesome news. I always kept on hoping they'd fix this bugger. And as Kevin says, now they just need to fix the scaling issue, and I'll personally be all set.

Apparently this update also addresses one of my biggest complaints regarding the web browser: no zoom. Not that I use the browser that often, but text on most web pages was too small at 720p and 1080i sitting at my normal viewing distance. Hold down square and use L2 and R2 to zoom in and out anywhere on a page. This'll change the browser from completely useless to an interesting novelty to play with.

Anyone have the release notes for the firmware? I'm curious to see what else has changed.

Your endless stalking of me is old.. Read your PM's from a few weeks ago, lets work out your like men and keep it off the forum.

Anyway, it was NOT a troll towards Hetz.  Anyone knows, half the darn internet was blaming the issue on "Bad Cables", "HD TV issues", "PS2 resolutions" and other things.  Even Sony weighed in and didn't acknowledge it for the most part.  My amazement was that they addressed something that wasn't even supposed to be a problem.

I can confirm that the zoom does work . This change actually makes it a pretty good browser. In fact I am typing this on my ps3. smile

I would like to hear actual impressions please, seeing as how I've been reading (primarily @ NeoGaf) that the image quality is still a little wonky, though better than before.

I've tried out FFXII and a bunch of other games and it looks better. I didn't think the image was that bad anyway (at least compared to how it looked on the PS2). There are some people over at NeoGaf that just like to complain about anything and everything....but even most people there agree it looks a whole lot better now.

Just to add what Hetz said, most of the people on GAF seem to be kvetching about the image being softer/blurrier than what the PS2 outputs. Seems that the blurriness is introduced when 480i games are deinterlaced and can be fixed by changing the output settings to 480i in the XMB.

dep, I'll try it both ways tonight and let you know what I find out. Is there anything else you'd like me to try, or any games in particular you want me to check out (assuming I have the game in question)?

So beautiful... *cry in joy* Thanks Sony.

I agree there is something odd with HDMI, but I am more than happy with it (god, FFXII feels like other game compared with pre 1.5 BC).

It's true....FFXII does look quite a bit better than before now that I have played more. I'm really impressed that they were able to fix this.

back in sdtv-land:
on ffxii & smt:ds, smeared/blurred bits in animated segments are gone. in-game, on okami, ffxii, & smt:ds, the image is a bit sharper & brighter...

really happy that they pulled this off - time for me to start thinking hdtv, i guess...

First off, I'm really impressed with the zoom feature on the web browser. It actually makes browsing on my TV a viable alternative to the computer. I was browsing the forums earlier this evening and I was surprised at how readable it was. Not something I'll do regularly, but it's definitely light years better than WebTV.

Now for the games. I can confirm that non-progressive scan PS2 games looked washed out and blurry in 480p. It wasn't especially pronounced with FFXII, but it was very noticeable in DQVIII and Rogue Galaxy With 480p turned off and Cross Color Flicker Reduction turned on however, the games look awesome. Comparing it to the output from my PS2, I might even go so far as to the say the PS3 produces a slightly better image (though that might be wishful thinking).

dep, I tried all the games you listed and I can safely say that you can play them on the PS3 with no loss in visual fidelity. You may have to tweak the display settings depending on the game, but that's a minor annoyance at worst.

I would like to hear actual impressions please, seeing as how I've been reading (primarily @ NeoGaf) that the image quality is still a little wonky, though better than before.

You'll recall my thread where I cited some pretty destroyed text on FFXII.  I did the update and it now looks clean as can be.  I'm using HDMI and a quality HDTV, for frame of reference.

As far as the web browser, I use my computer for web surfing - couldn't care less about this feature.

If you're planning to play a lot of PS2 games over the PS2, you should consider switching to component, since, IIRC, the PS3 doesn't do 480i over HDMI. If you haven't tried PS2 games in 480i yet, give it a whirl. They'll look even better.
