Any word on when the new PS3s will be available?  All I see is the 40GB versions and the 80s are nowhere to be found.

Thoughts?  Thanks!

Sadly, the 80gb PS3s are being phased out/discontinued just like the 60gb PS3s were.

Does anyone think there's gonna be a new PS3 offered soon?  I would like to get one at this point, but don't want to get a 40GB if there's a better one right around the corner.

I wonder if the new model will have the same software BC that the 80 gig does.

Sony was supposed to be doing away with it to save on costs.  I understand that including PS2 hardware would have been expensive, but I don't understand why they couldn't maintain software emulation at a very minimal cost.  Anyhow, Sony has certainly changed their minds before (controllers that rumble anyone?), so even though they say "no" now, I wouldn't be surprised to see them totally change their minds in another 6 months.

Also, a little blurb on PS3 Fanboy about the latest issue of EGM where Sony talks about offering PS2 titles for download with built in emulation software.  That worries me a little, since they'd probably make a lot more money charging people to replay their old favourites one by one then just allowing everyone access to all their old games for free.

Having Sony shift from offering backwards compatibility to only offering a kind of Virtual Console/Xbox Originals thing would be incredibly annoying, and yet somehow unsurprising from Sony.  If I own the game already, and you offer to let me download it, then there's software emulation available, so let me just use my own game.

As for the backwards compatibility in the 80gig system, I heard somewhere along the line that while that system used software emulation, there was still a few of the PS2 components in there.  I think it was that the software emulated the CPU, but the graphics were handled by a physical PS2 chip.  Removing that would certainly eliminate some cost.

I still find it amusing that the 360 now has much better backwards compatibility than the PS3.

Somebody worked out the 'cost' of removing said chip (as you're exactly correct as to how the 80GB model does BC) to about $5 per console. In other words - it's absolutely nothing of any consequence.

But Sony removed it anyway, and it's apparently the standard they'll be keeping with later on (so don't expect PS2 support in any consoles in the future, just bigger HDs).

Well apparently the 80 GB is gone form sony's own online store now.  And they are giving their GDC address today, so hopefully a new sku is announced so I can go buy it slywink

I have a hard time believing they will remove BC completely from all models unless they have figured out how to get decent compatibility in software only. They need to have something to differentiate the tiers.

I think the channels may be drying up to support a dual-shock roll out. makes more sense to me.

I think if it was a dualshock pack-in thing, then we'd be seeing the 40 gig go away too.  This feels like something else.  What it might be is taking out Motorstorm and including a dualshock, possibly with a bigger hard drive.  I don't know whether to say whether backwards compatibility will go or stay.  I guess it depends on how much they want to force PS2 download games down our throats.

so, is Sony planning on releasing a new upper tier model about every 7-9 months now?  The first 60 gig was 11-2006, then the 80 gig was what, July 2007, and now that's being discontinued.  If they are making this a trend I guess the next one will be replaced around the holidays, so if someone's looking for a PS3 around September it might be wise to wait a bit...

My guess is that the 40 GB will be the "standard" PS3 for a while.  Besides, why include a $5 chip when you can pay $130 for a PStwo?  (Granted, I'm guessing this summer it will go down to $100.)  Backwards compatibility is a thing of the past if you don't have a PS3 that has it right now.

Other than including a DualShock 3 (which they should have redesigned to have real triggers for instead of using the current abomination that is the L2 and R2 buttons), about the only change we'll most likely see are the colors the console comes in.

At some point they will likely shrink the case too.

Not that I would buy another one, but it would be nice if they put on an IR port too.  While I don't think lack of an IR port is a big deal for gaming since I'll have the controller out anyway, it's a bigger deal to anyone looking to buy the PS3 primarily for a Blu-Ray player.

Why not?  This whole idea of needing multiple SKUs is new this generation and, so far, I'm not convinced it does anything but create consumer confusion.

The first time Sony introduced a new SKU, they replaced full backwards compatibility with software emulation which they promised would probably be almost as good.  It was also $100 more expensive than the fully BC version which had just had a price drop.

The second time Sony introduced a new SKU, they stripped out BC altogether and offered a smaller hard drive than the fully BC 60-gig version, but cost just as much.

Given the trend so far, I'm surprised people would be looking forward to any more new PS3 SKUs.  Tongue

Why wouldn't we be looking forward to more SKUs?  At this rate, by the end of the year we should end up with a PS3 that's only forwards compatible, and I can't wait to see what PS4 titles look like.

Sony announces 80GB MGS4 bundle with dual shock 3 for $499

So the 80GB clearly isn't gone for good.
I wonder if it is backward compatible.
Who knows if we'll see it as a stand-alone sku or not.

It has been confirmed (by a Sony rep at the Official Playstation Blog) that the new bundle will indeed offer a backwards-compatible PS3, much like the latest Motorstorm SKU.

You know... if you are trying to expound upon the validity of first rate PS3 titles in H1 08, including things like a prologue, 2 betas (one rumored, no less) , and a store redesign makes it seem like you are just finding ways to fill the list.

Right, because who plays betas, right?

IIRC, people bought Crackdown in droves to play the Halo 3 beta.  I think it's a legitimate thing to put in a list.

I'm seeing Q2 for the PS3 bundle.  What's the last month of Q2?  I'm still trying to convince the wife...

Also, are they slapping MGS4 images all over the PS3 in the bundle?  That'll bum me out.

PS3 Bundle is confirmed for June.  Yes, there will be an image of Solid Snake on the box, similar to the Motorstorm image on the current 80 Gig bundle.  A picture of the packaging is floating around somewhere.

Yeah, I thought they were going to call it Valkyrie of the Battlefield in the US,
but it hit our system as Valkyria Chronicles...who knows. Anyway, the hand-drawn
style of it looks really impressive to me. Near as I can tell, the game plays somewhat
like the very early stages of Eternal Sonata, where you have an action bar that only
depletes when you move or attack (you appear to have much longer to act than in ES, though).
I think this bar may be shared between characters. Enemy characters have the ability to
react during your phase if they see you, so you can't (well...wouldn't want to) just run up to them casually.
You have the ability to do stuff like take cover and crawl through grass.

This video will give you an interesting look at it, and if anyone can translate, we might get more info.
This looks to be the first great PS3 JRPG.

As for White Knight Story, apologies for sounding so dismissive before.
I'm not convinced by it yet, but that doesn't mean it won't be great.
Not sure if we'll see it this year, though. I'm also really looking
forward to Last Remnant.
