We've been treated with better and better firmware releases from Sony for the PSP.  Sony's adding some functionality to the PSP that actually makes sense!  The latest firmware update (available NOW) adds an Internet Radio option, which is powered by SHOUTcast.

Pretty neat player, you're able to select a genre then cycle through available radio stations.  For whatever reason, it was on 80's by default, and I didn't know I had to scroll down to select a genre Tongue

And right now I'm cycling through the available game radio stations out there, found a nice station, Radio GOSU: 24/7 Video Game Music, and it's playing some music from Final Fantasy IX.

Pretty cool stuff - thanks Sony slywink

Cool. Grabbing the new update now.

Does it have anything other than internet radio?

Cool, just in time for me to pickup a Japanese PSP.  Colored PSPs for the win.

Can I play SNES/NES/Genesis games under this version? Can I play my purchased games off of my memory stick? No? I'll stick with what I have and wait for the hacking community to 'fix this version up properly'. biggrin

I did read one interesting thing for those who own the official firmware and a PS3 (via the other thread if you haven't read it yet) - you can now Remote Play your PS1 games that are on your PS3's HD on your PSP. Very cool feature.

Yeah, just gave it a whirl.  Played some SotN (which I game-shared with depward, and can't put on my PSP).  There was a little bit of lag.  It will be PERFECT for RPGs (tempted to grab Wild Arms to play it...).

Wait, a sec- this remote play thing is HUGE. It's not limited to downloads- discs supposedly work too! No need for hacked PS1 emulation anymore for me!  This is probably the closest Sony has ever got to make me make my PSP "legit" again though I'll still have to think on it.

if that's true, than damn.  that would be so awesome and make having a 4gb memory card less of a requirement to playing ps1 on the psp.

someone needs to check this out and see if it's working.

i really hope they have done this.  i so want this option for ps2 games as well.

This 100% works.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Vagrant Story, both of which I own in disc form, work when using remote play.

SWEET, Vagrant Story on the PSP is a treat biggrin  This may be the RPG that cures my RPG blues!

Gah, just tried a PS2 game and it apparently only works for PSOne games.

That's okay, it may be further down the pipeline smile

Can you copy the game to a memory card?  Of are you just playing via WiFi?

(Either way it's cool.  I'm just greedy)

I believe memory card is just for games from the PS1 store (and anything ripped if you're using hacked firmware).

The important point here, however, is that using remote play over wifi you are using PS3's PS1 emulation instead of PSP's PS1 emulation.  The former is much better than the latter.

I'm playing within my own private network.  I'm able to connect over the Internet, as well.  And of course, the last PS3 firmware had the option of turning on the PS3 when using the PSP's remote play, so you don't even need to really "prep" your PS3 (with the exception of having the game in the drive).

This 100% works.

y'know, having a ps3 & a psp just continues to get better'n'better - totally unexpected, & very nice, indeed. ps1 games look & feel so much better on the psp than on the big screen...

So what you're saying is.  If I have a PS3, and I buy a PSP, with this new firmware... I can throw a PS1 game into my PS3 (say, FF IX) and play it ANYWHERE I have a WiFi connection and a PSP?

IS THAT RIGHT?

Weird how the entire PSOne functionality was left out of the firmware notes (as far as I can recall) and isn't even mentioned in the Firmware Update (v2.10) post on the Official Playstation Blog.

I'm not complaining Tongue

That's really cool.  But if you are out of wifi range (like say in my bathroom at work  paranoid) then it won't play right?  It doesn't copy it to the memory card it just streams it across the network?

Ahhh.  Now I feel like a big idiot for buying a Japanese PS3 instead of a North American one frown

Just for clarification, PS3's can't play multi-region PSOne games can they?  I know they can't play multi-region PS2 games.

It must be streaming across the network, as not everybody has a 1gig memory stick, and the PSP sure as heck doesn't have that kind of internal memory.

That said - if it's actually playing on the PS3, and thus using the PS3 emulation, that's big. Although, don't get me wrong, the PSP emulates PS1 games quite well as it is (about 90-95% compatibility at last check), the PS3 could definitely do it better.

And Canuck - to the best of my knowledge, the PS3 enforces region checking for PS1 games.

I need to find a list of the buggier PS1/PSP games and see if it works fine over the PS3/PSP connection. Or more accurately, let you all find out, as I'm still not upgrading my PSP. Tongue

I hope that they implement this for PS2 eventually.  I have no doubt that it's possible with a bit of effort but I'm concerned that with PS2 BC removed there won't be much incentive to put resources toward it.
