RPGFan has some new information about FF13 and versus13.  There are also some new scans at RPGamer, showing some new areas and a new character.

13 looks fantastic, but that story just seems hokey as hell.  I hope we are just getting a snippet....

And yea, "Lightning"?  Blech.

I'm pretty sure that like many things, the word Lightning isn't that bad of a name in Japan, or at least some derivative of the word.  But I suspect it'll get changed here in the US.

As for the story being hokey, when has a FF story not been hokey?  I can forgive hokeyness so long as the characterizations are good, and FF hasn't really disapointed in that area.

I'm definitely looking forward to the action oriented gameplay, it's long overdue for them to try new things, er well they did already try new stuff that worked in other games, but it's nice to see it come to FF12 and 13.  I'm hoping they try some sort of co-op play, no online needed, just allow a other players to control the other party members in battle, now that'd be cool.

I definitely like the character designs.  The female doesn't look dainty, she's definitely female, although a bit andro.  And the male lead doesn't look like a girl this time.

I'm finding 12 to have a pretty complex storyline.  I'm *only* 40 hours in, but thus far....

12 is kind of an outlier though- the man behind the story had never worked on a "proper" FF before but was instead responsible for the very complex and political storylines of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vagrant Story.  Working on FF12 nearly killed him though and rumor is he no longer works for Square and no one really knows where he ended up.

FF13 is from the same teams that have worked the previous core FF titles and the story and setting certainly seems to be a throwback to those games as well.  I'm personally fine with that since I love the older titles every bit as much as I love FF12 but I imagine some will be disappointed.

This explains a lot.  I loved the story behind FF Tactics.

But I hear the director for 13 is the same guy who did X-2.  So I'm a little bit cautious about it.

It is indeed the same director but he has worked in some capacity on every game since FF7 except for FF12 which is the same with the rest of the core FF13 staff.

I'm sure Square figures that if we can stomach a main character named Cloud for 40+ hours, we can deal with a character named Lightning.

Kevin, you truly know how to crush a man's soul.  I'm going to go weep in the corner now.  icon_wink

Actually, I'm a FF whore so I'm sure I'll end up playing both games.  My problem with FFX-2 was less the story and more the Barbie/Charlie's Angels/Britney Spears feel the game had.  As long as it's targeted to gamers other than 13-year-old girls, we'll probably be OK.

Yeah, I think the games will be fine. They were pretty upfront that they were using FFX-2 as an experiment so I don't think they'll be quite so wacky with a main series entry.

This is the guy that is producing it: Yoshinori Kitase (director of VII and VIII; producer of X, X-2, and XIII)

Here is the director and his creds:  Motomu Toriyama

                                               * Final Fantasy XIII — (TBD; as Director)

I'm definitely looking forward to the action oriented gameplay, it's long overdue for them to try new things, er well they did already try new stuff that worked in other games, but it's nice to see it come to FF12 and 13.  I'm hoping they try some sort of co-op play, no online needed, just allow a other players to control the other party members in battle, now that'd be cool.

FF6 did this, and it was a great optional feature. A friend and I played through most of the game this way, splitting control of the party between us in battle.
