they're announcing an announcement will be made April 28th on 'The Next Big Thing' from them.  it's been a few years since the last major X release (other than the X collections) so perhaps it'll be X4, or maybe they'll try something totally new.

maybe with eve out and fulfilling much of the void of an X mmorpg, they don't feel it's necessary to make their own.  not sure how much they could add to X4 except planet based combat and the usual promise of planet>space free transitions like evochron has.

Heck even if it was PvE focused it would attract a different crowd than EVE. I really hope its a MMOG. With JGE out of the picture and Black Prophecy not looking so hot, there is still a pretty big niche just waiting for a game.

I always thought the area with the most room for improvement was with the AI. More real ship chatter. More responsive, varied, and engaging factions. The world always seemed dry and lifeless to me even though it had so much supply/demand activity going on.

I hope its more X2 than X3. X3 just felt slow, bloated, and unwieldy compared to X2. They tried so hard to fix up the UI, but then lost something in the transition. And bring back the damn cockpits!

No matter what they announce, I'm excited!

I agree regarding X2 vs. X3. I really put a lot of time and effort into X2 and had a good amount to show for it. But in X3 it seemed much harder to make any progress.

Yep.  X3 still makes me cry.  Despite being a rabid fanboy of the series I never got anywhere in X3.  I just couldn't get started.

The announcement, and even the explanatory email from Egosoft, hasn't really made clear what's going to be different about Rebirth.  Ah well, it'll be a day-one for me anyway, especially if it is easier to get started as they have claimed.

they have a product page up now

Quote
Enter a young adventurer and his unlikely female ally traveling in an old, battered ship with a glorious past - two people alone against the galaxy, playing a key part in the events to come. The fate of the universe rests in the hands of the player...

that almost sounds like Darkstar One.

they didn't go very far with that aspect did they?

i really wish they had gone with something which tied into the other games' characters.  make you the same character as in x3, but at the end of his life, an eccentric old man with a vast corporation behind him, a dynasty led by his grandsons, who vie for ownership of the company.  start you out in an older model ship, but decked out in expensive gear that is being obsoleted by new tech.  give you a reason to hold onto this ship but give you the option to pick up newer sleeker craft.

as for the usual advancements, i think they should take a page out of eastern euro devs and expand the universe and how you play in it.

i haven't even touched the terran expansion for x3 yet.  i bought it during the last steam sale and forgot to take in how much of a time sink it can be.

I wonder if the player will still be able to own and build space stations.

I don't mind playing the giant battleship/carrier and flying smaller ships... although that does take some fun out of finally getting the cool huge ship you wanted (either by buying it or piracy).

Green Man gaming has it up now too, kinda waiting to see what discount codes they offer for it; I imagine they'll have at least a 20% off one that will work on it eventually.

This is currently my most anticipated game! The whole thing is right up my alley, so to speak. Its kinda like EVE is supposed to be my favorite game ever, but I find it quite boring, so I'm hoping this is more fun!

I'm really looking forward to it too.  If this can be like a modern version of Elite, which I loved, that would make me very happy.  I hope the gameplay and world is more engaging than the previous X titles.  The graphics look amazing.

Quick impressions..
Graphics look great for the most part. I'm having some shadow issues where some of them are SUPER jaggy. Have all graphics settings maxed out and runs good for the most part, some lag here and there.
No jump drive here. using the new highway system... I think it is kind of cool, but I do like jump drives better.. mostly because the highway system itself is kind of a mini game, so you have to pay attention... Seems like the highways go one way each. While on the highway, there are times where it just ends where you need to be, but also times, you have to pay attention and take the "exit", so, just like a real one, you can miss you exit it looks like (haven't actually done so yet). there is an on screen prompt showing distance to exit though. There is also a way to speed up in the highway by slipstreaming other ships. it's not required, so you can skip that part, it will just take longer to get where you are going. (be careful, you can move too far while trying to slipstream and exit the highway accidentally. Not a huge deal since you just have to turn around and get back on, just adds time.
This version has improved in the tutorial parts, but still leaves something to be desired as the prompts sometimes leave too quickly and at times are also either confusing or missing info. (like targeting)
My joystick isn't working as expected, but it is probably a configuration issue. (it defaults to up,down, left, and right strafing, instead of the usual pitch/yaw)
I've got just about an hour into the campaign only, but so far so good.

Watched a bit of someone playing it on Twitch. Game looks very good but it sounds like there are a lot of initial bugs. People are complaining about slowdowns near/in stations but the FPS seemed ok for the guy playing on Twitch. The biggest issue he mentioned was with trading where its very buggy and recommended only doing one thing at a time -and even then he was cheering if it succeeded. He also mentioned that it has a steep learning curve like the other X games. Was hoping they would improve that.

Yeah, even with the improved tutorial, there is a steep learning curve... Definately need to read the manual.. and again, the tutorial is only decent.. As I mentioned, there are issues with it.. The manual does seem to have more details, but haven't given it a detailed look yet..

After my disappointment with SOL: Exodus (aka Shit Out of Luck Exodus  Roll Eyes) and with the demised space combat MMO Black Prophecy, I've decided to stop running lemming-like towards every game promising to revive space combat in a fun and imaginative way.

Somehow, it's just not as easy as it seems like it ought to be, to recapture the days of Wing Commander, X-Wing, Tie-Fighter, Freespace, Freelancer et al. Maybe the genre's largely dead because nobody knows how to do it right anymore. They only know how to claim to, in their marketing. icon_confused

I haven't run into any major issues yet.
The article is correct about then pics look and dialog..
I too miss autopilot, but mostly because I used for drink and bathroom breaks.
There are definately bugs, but again, nothing major for me.. I also expected bugs, just like every other game in the series ( and most large and complex games). Only about 2 hours in so far and still in tutorial mode, but I do like it.
