they're announcing an announcement will be made April 28th on 'The Next Big Thing' from them. it's been a few years since the last major X release (other than the X collections) so perhaps it'll be X4, or maybe they'll try something totally new.

What happened to the long-promised MMO from them?

maybe with eve out and fulfilling much of the void of an X mmorpg, they don't feel it's necessary to make their own. not sure how much they could add to X4 except planet based combat and the usual promise of planet>space free transitions like evochron has.

Direct control mmo as opposed to click based would be a huge draw imho

Heck even if it was PvE focused it would attract a different crowd than EVE. I really hope its a MMOG. With JGE out of the picture and Black Prophecy not looking so hot, there is still a pretty big niche just waiting for a game.
I always thought the area with the most room for improvement was with the AI. More real ship chatter. More responsive, varied, and engaging factions. The world always seemed dry and lifeless to me even though it had so much supply/demand activity going on.
I hope its more X2 than X3. X3 just felt slow, bloated, and unwieldy compared to X2. They tried so hard to fix up the UI, but then lost something in the transition. And bring back the damn cockpits!
No matter what they announce, I'm excited!

I agree regarding X2 vs. X3. I really put a lot of time and effort into X2 and had a good amount to show for it. But in X3 it seemed much harder to make any progress.

Yep. X3 still makes me cry. Despite being a rabid fanboy of the series I never got anywhere in X3. I just couldn't get started.

The announcement, and even the explanatory email from Egosoft, hasn't really made clear what's going to be different about Rebirth. Ah well, it'll be a day-one for me anyway, especially if it is easier to get started as they have claimed.

they have a product page up now. Enter a young adventurer and his unlikely female ally traveling in an old, battered ship with a glorious past - two people alone against the galaxy, playing a key part in the events to come. The fate of the universe rests in the hands of the player... that almost sounds like Darkstar One.

The fate of the universe rests in the hands of the player... that almost sounds like Darkstar One. they didn't go very far with that aspect did they? i really wish they had gone with something which tied into the other games' characters. make you the same character as in x3, but at the end of his life, an eccentric old man with a vast corporation behind him, a dynasty led by his grandsons, who vie for ownership of the company. start you out in an older model ship, but decked out in expensive gear that is being obsoleted by new tech. give you a reason to hold onto this ship but give you the option to pick up newer sleeker craft. as for the usual advancements, i think they should take a page out of eastern euro devs and expand the universe and how you play in it. i haven't even touched the terran expansion for x3 yet. i bought it during the last steam sale and forgot to take in how much of a time sink it can be.

I wonder if the player will still be able to own and build space stations.
I don't mind playing the giant battleship/carrier and flying smaller ships... although that does take some fun out of finally getting the cool huge ship you wanted (either by buying it or piracy).

Yes you can. There is a whole set of sticky forum threads on their site talking about the game mechanics.
