I used to play TF2 quite a bit, but haven't for a few months.  The constant hat updates has kind of turned me off from playing TF2 anymore.  Lately Monday Night Combat fits the bill if I feel in the mood for that type of game.

The Saxxy's seems like a pretty cool idea. The few times I get on to play I'm far too busy trying to survive, so there's no way I'd be able to muster the thought required to create a film. That said, the 'Epic Fail' category sounds like one I'd have a chance at.

I keep hoping that 1 of these uber announcements will be that Valve's fixed the issues that have turned the game into a slo-mo fest. I fear all these hats and store crap are just breaking the poor, aging game engine.

Does anyone still play.  Would be interested in playing but most servers require seem to be running custom scripts that I hate downloading

Yeah I play nearly every night with a solid group of guys from Gamers With Jobs (which has a few OO'ers there as well). The quality of play is pretty high and communication is excellent.

Here is a link to the thread that has been going on since beta, a few years ago. It currently has almost 37,000 posts, so it's updated often. You don't need to read them all or anything, just post a link to your SteamID and ask for an invite to the group. Every night around 8:30-9:30 eastern there'll be an announcement for the server. They have private server nights on Monday and Friday. You'll want to play there and post on the forum a couple times before you ask for the password.

By today's bleeding edge standards my gaming rig would be low-to-mid spec'd at best. But here's the deal, when TF2 1st debuted my PC had a single core and a measly GF 7600GT, and the game actually ran faster than it does on my system now with a dual-processor, significant GPU upgrade and double the RAM. I'm also know I'm not alone - check the Steam forums and you'll see countless posts about the degrade in performance in the past year or 2 by even people with some decent PC's. It's not that it isn't playable, it is, but the game has moments of serious performance drops. Maybe its me, but I have to wonder about a game based on such an old engine that actually has become more hardware demanding in recent years. I wouldn't mind it so much, but for the fact both that other Source game seriously outperform it on my rig despite having better graphics, a lot more polys on screen and as many players online.

Glad to see it went F2P, but I'd personally rather they kept it the way it originally was, minus the micro-transaction greed and with better performance.

I wouldn't mind trying out TF2 again, but am not sure how well I would do.  I stopped playing way before all the updates to the classes.

The steam forums are a-flutter about the "tour of duty" mode.  It looks like they are official servers that you have to buy tickets ($0.99) to enter, but you can get loot from it.  You can still play the new mode without buying tickets, but no loot.

Of course everybody hates it.

"Everybody" will hate it publicly, and yet miraculously tons of players will pay for it and Valve will make bank.  That's how these things tend to go.
