Orgull, I'll put this plainly: The Movies makes The Sims, Sims2, and all of the expansion packs combined look like tinker toys in comparison. Before people dust off their Peter M. bashing sticks, let me tell you that this game delivers on the hype. I made three movies (1.5 stars mind you) in the 3 hours I played and the whole press corp that was there was launghing their ass off. I've never seen this kind of reaction from this group of people (I see the same press folk pretty often) towards any game. Everyone seemed to be loving it. I have roughly 10 pages of notes to write into a preview. I'll do my best to have it on the site by Wednesday.

I think this one just made day one for me. I'm want to make my own Buckaroo Bonzai flick, followed by a Shadowrun movie.

Oh man....just read avaults preview from the LH Times...this game is going to spawn so much machinima. Even better...import my own dialog? *ahem* WOW!!! Ron, is the scripting system just a flowchart system? Is it really going to be that easy to make nice complex scenes?

Ron, is the scripting system just a flowchart system? Is it really going to be that easy to make nice complex scenes? Well, basically to set up a simple movie you would decide what genre - sci fi, western, romance, horror, etc. You then get a standard 'template' of sorts. Do you have to follow the template? Hell no. I'm telling you that my movie "Flamethrower: The Weapon of Choice" did NOT follow the standard scripting! You plunk in the appropriate number of stars, extras, crew, director, etc. and then you can go in and adjust as you see fit. The picture "Fade to Blue" (2nd one with the girl in the Khaki) is a good example. As you unlock stuff you get more sliders. For instance, "Flamethrower" had fog effects...lots and lots of fog effects. It just popped down below as another slider option. Light, heavy, etc. fog coverage. You can also modify the lighting from one end of the spectrum to the other, change the backdrop, change the interaction level (hostile, friendly, romantic, etc.) you can place any props you've unlocked, change the backdrop (for when you can see through the windows or if you are outside), change the wardrobe, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. There is just an infinite number of stuff you can do to a scene. More on this when I get the preview done.

My BIG question- is there a sandbox mode(with everything unlocked) for someone who just wants to make movies and not 'play' the game? Please say yes!

Yep, the sandbox mode will allow you to give yourself up to (iirc) 100,000,000 dollars and all the tech for the time period you select (from 1920 -> beyond now) and you can just go nuts.

Then this just became a 'must' have for me. The previous moviemaking game I played(S Spielberg's Director's Chair) was pretty much ruined by the lack of a sandbox mode.
I saw that video Yahoo had in their games section, showing some of how the moviemaking stuff worked- it was really alot better than I hoped it would be. With sandbox mode, this should be good for tons of fun.
edit: I see from reading the faq that export to mpeg file is included. So there will be some cool editing possible after the basic movie has been made- YES!

I suspect it could be interesting to re-do the same movie at 5-year intervals to see how technology changes the film...

Makes me wonder if studios or directors think that often. We know that Lucas did...it's why he didn't make Star Wars I, II, and III until recently.

Of course, I'm thinking of it as an intellectual exercise, not an excuse to release the same story over and over and over and over. At the least, do one movie with 1920 tech, one with 1970 tech, and one with 2020 tech (or as close as possible to it).

I was just making a statement about the irony.

Must... resist.... CG.... effect.....
Ah, crap. I'll probably run out and pick this up when it comes out. It looks to have just enough of the 'Keeper' gameplay that I love. I had initially disregarded this, and I thought that the movie part of the game would be a gimick and wouldn't deliver. Mmmm.... crow pie.
Is there an option for a Kung-Fu movie? And Ron, have they mentioned anything about modability, or planned expansions? I can see this -really- taking off...

Wow Knightshade! What a great hands-on... the best yet. Very detailed and full of content. Thanks for all the hard work, that was terrific. Now if you have a copy of the game for me, just PM me with your address and I'll mail you a large cheque. EDIT: Ok "Questions for Knightshade" What are all the (45) sets and all the scenes (7000)? A list of names will be fine please. What are all the costumes? How many buildings are there total in the game, what are they and how do they work? Jeje  Seriously though... 1) How fast does time pass during the story game b) and does time pause when you are in the custom script maker? 2) How exactly are sets assigned to a script b) and can the writers choose from any sets available c) and will they mix genres? 3) Where is my copy sir?
