What's official media and why do I care?
The official CDs/DVDs.  You care because you're getting an actual physical product for your money, which my lawyer friends say is good.

Ah.  Well, D2D allows you to back up your media onto CDs and has unlimited number of activations, so I'm not sure I'm missing a whole lot by not having nice silk-screened art on my media instead of a magic marker scrawling that says NWN2.

I can see why some people are turned off (especially if you are looking for installatins on multiple machines) but it seems pretty reasonable, especially if I want a game when I either don't have time to get to the store.  And ability to resell for PC games is meaningless for me because the market is so crappy most games are $19.99 or less after only a few months so there really isn't much value to the physical media to begin with.

Can you post some more screenshots?  I'd like to see a couple of other areas.  I really like the art direction of the first ones.

I don't think your lawyer friends are very good at the whole "law" thing then.

Not to mention the fact that what happens if you do need more activations, and D2D isn't around?  I purchased *1* product from Trymedia (D2D) in the past, and everytime I change any hardware on my sons PC, I have to make a phone call to get new a new Key to activate the product.

The big PLUS side to this is that I would have tossed the CD out a LONG time ago, but given I can just redownload and reactivate anytime, the game manages to sneak back onto the HD every so often.  (Sponge Bob game of some type for kiddies)

The big downsides as I said,  strict DRM that doesn't support multiple machines, no tangible media, inability to resell, and worse, if something goes wrong and they aren't around in the future, no more activations.  A big one for me is the fact you cannot resell the game..  Often I purchase a game and it wears out fast, and if I sell it quick enough, I recover most of my money.  Company of Heroes for example wore out in a matter of 10-14 days here, I paid $45.99 for it, and resold it after a couple weeks for $40.00.  If I had gone the D2D route I would have had to swallow a $50.00 loss on the product.

I do believe in the digital download distribution method, but feel that at the least there should be reasonable and amicable DRM, and the ability to resell the product with a small transfer fee.  None of which are trademarks of D2D.

You know, if you DID make that your avatar (or something like it), it would have been so awesome.  But you had to get all prickly.  You let me down man.

Back to the game, I need confirmation that Deekin is somehow involved.

I'm back on the fence with this one.  I do really want to play it, but I'm afraid I won't put any time into it after picking up FF XII.  I have it paid for at Gamestop, but I think I'm going to transfer that $$ towards Guitar Hero II then pick up NWN2 after I finish a couple other games.  No sense paying $50 to have a dust collector on my shelf for a month.

I'm hoping Best Buy gets this in today (their ad said they would).  I don't feel like going to EB/Gamestop because:

a) I didn't preorder, so I don't want the guilt trip or the "claim" that they don't have any in for walk-ins.

b) Even with no less than five Gamestops near me, I frankly can't remember which ones stock PC games.

I ordered it, based on a couple of my WOW guildies with older systems saying it played fine on their boxes. I meet the suggested reqs in all but video card (it's a mobile Radeon 9700 w/ 256 MB of RAM), so I'm hoping it will at least be "playable" on my machine (playable to me - enough eye candy on so it doesn't look like crap and a decent frame rate).

I see a couple retailers already got this for $39..  Isn't it $50 at Direct2Drive?  I am half tempted at $39, which is my magical price point, but with soooo many big games on my plate right now, I am afraid NWN2 will take a backseat until the $29 mark this time.

Even with my current lack of time to play everything I have I grabbed a copy (I hate you Hetz  Tongue) and installed it.  About all that I got done was creating a character and getting to the portion where you meet your two friends.  Most of my time was spent tweaking the graphics settings-  I started with everything maxed out (although it looks like I'm missing Anistropy in one of the setting boxes (can't remember which one and I'm at work) but it's in every other one) and it ran but was a little laggy so I'm still trying to find the sweet spot.  If I'm remembering the options correctly I think it's mainly the shadow options that I have had to turn down for it to be playable.  Currently I'm running a P4 3.2 ghz w/ 1 gig of RAM and a 6800 w/ 256 ram.  I may drop another gig of RAM into the box, but last night I was also looking at parts for my next PC, so by early next year I should be able to play this in all it's glory (and considering my console game backlog I have to be realistic and say chances are that I'll get in any serious playtime with NWN2 before this are pretty slim).

Yeah, I grabbed it at lunch as well.  Was a bit bummed that it only comes in a paper sleeve and the manual isn't spiral bound (shouldn't be surprised considering it's Atari though).  On the plus side, the manual is over 150 pages.

Heh, now I just don't know when I'm going to play it icon_smile I feel like I want to play this and FFXII equally but both are such huge timesinks that trying to play them simulataneously is probably a recipe for disaster.  I'm at least going to install NWN2 today (just to make sure it works, you know) and I guess we'll see which way I go.

Which one are you tackling first?

Well-putting aside the fact that your thoughts above exactly mirror my concern about playing these games-my plan is to play 70% FF12 and 30% NWN2. This is why I think it will work: FF12, like most console games, I play when I know I have a somewhat significant block of time. GF is asleep (or wife in your case), lights are out, I can enjoy it for 3 hours in a row. For a PC game like NWN2 when I know I can save anywhere, an hour or 45 minutes from 5-6, 8-9, and 10:30-11 usually allows me to feel like I am making progress. If I feel like my enjoyment of one story or game is suffering as a result, I will stop and play FF12 exclusively, but I would very much enjoy getting NWN2 started too. All the talk of similarities to PS:T and BG 2 just make it too appealing.

So-if your schedule coincides, lets see about muddling around with the co-op one night this week!

Please report how it goes if you get it and mess around with it a bit.

I wanna go out and buy this bloody thing, but retardo computer programming in this abominable "Meta" language (it's a Scheme knockoff) has got me stuck at home til... oh, probably midnight.

I'm thinking about a Blackguard.  I want to be Chaotic Evil, but damn, that's hard to roleplay.  I might do Neutral or Lawful Evil just so I can rationalize talking to people.

Anyone know if they implemented Paladins converting to Blackguards in this version?

Sure thing, LD.  Looking at the main forums it looks like I might be able to run it at defaults setting without a preformance hit, BUT we'll see.

For anyone interested in picking up a Limited Edition package, check your local stores.  Best Buy had several on the shelf when I picked up mine, and stores like Wal*Mart and Target say they should have received their shipments within the next week or so.

I cant recall where I read it..think either on GT or OO but someoen said the LE version is'nt worth it really. The map is cheap with the graphic screenprinted on and the rings are basically the same with one saying Lawful Good and the other Chaotic Evil and both have the NWN eye design.

I like LE and CE versions usually but Im not sure on this one if thats the way it is. I want NWN2 and hope to get it a while after release when the price comes down but think Id try the normal version.

Well I have a p4 3.2, 1gb ram and an ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256mb.  The game runs very nice, but have to use low texture detail which mean armor looks like, well utter crap heh.  Hoping the new video card, which should arrive tomorrow!!! will make a considerable difference.  I really didn't want to upgrade my machine damnit heh...

Seeing as the game bundles in xFire I went ahead and installed it.  Anyone else on it?  my nick is arkon262 on xFire.

I don't have much in the way of real impressions (just futzed around for 15 minutes with a premade character to see how it ran on my system) and I have to say that NWN2 seems to have one of the better Auto-Detect Settings options I've seen.  Other than bumping resolution one notch above recommended (1280x1024 instead of 1024x768), every option that I've enabled that wasn't on by default has had a signficant decrease in performance, while the recommended setup runs just great.  Game looks really nice but the voice acting that I've encountered so far is been pretty sub-standard.

lol, they bundle in a free 7-day trial of Dungeons and Dragons Online with the game.  What a waste of plastic.

Tell me about it.
