So many NES games I've just never heard of, much listened to the soundtrack to.

Quote
That is the 8-bit equivalent of a tyrannosaurus in a helicopter. That is a Rocky training montage in a burning oil tanker while electric guitars wail in the background. That track is two robots flying across the Pacific, firing missiles and laser beams at each other in a battle for the future of humanity.

An epic set of sentences. biggrin

Hm, that game has reminded me of one of my NES (or rather: gameboy) favorites I owned: Nintendo World Cup. That was a soccer game where you could also punch or kick your opponents, permanently disabling them. Whenever I played this with a friend, it would turn out into a bloody melee game. But then, even when I played the NES game 'Tennis' it would quickly dissolve into a fake fight.

I hope - just as you - that the subgenre of the sports-game-in-which-you-can-beat-up-your-opponents will return!

I have no idea why that idea hasn't come back around. It's a no-brainer!

It's called Backbreaker.  You can bet that any officially licensed sports game makes sure to have rules against that sort of behavior.

I'll bet if I played Archon Classic on PC (which I didn't know existed until just now!) I'd love it.

Are you playing through all these games?  What happens when you get to Battletoads and can't finish it?

I don't think the game is that short  icon_wink

Every game will be played for 20 minutes, no more, no less. This is because I'm not going to sit and play a horribly crappy game for hours on end, and rare is the NES game that slowly reveals its mysteries over hours of play. If an NES game sucks, you know it sucks right off the bat, honestly.

Ah, missed that part.

Aren't some of these games actually good? Like you'd want to play for more than 20 minutes?

Actually, I've run into several that I really want to keep playing. I'm actually changing the rules to "at least 20 minutes" because the good ones are so far between that I don't want to cut them short.

Now there's a game I remember playing in my youth.

Also, Athena next week? Oh lord I'm sorry.

Astyanax is still a good game, but it could have been so much better if they would have had to censor it so harshly.

think you may have meant wouldn't.  or would the game have been better with more censoring?  icon_razz

Still enjoying your reviews! Through these series, you paint a rather nuanced view of your country, and many of it's idiosyncrasies. This coupled with a lot of video game history unknown to me makes for very interesting reads. Keep it going!  thumbsup thumbsup

So I restarted this, and I'm going chronologically this time around. Made a heck of a lot more sense.

I restarted last week, but because it was 10-Yard Fight again, I didn't repost. Instead, here's Baseball. Enjoy!

[pedant]arcade version of Arkanoid used a wheel, not a trackball[/pedant]

also, Clu Clu Land is still one of my all-time favorite NES titles. you have to play around with it a bit to get used to the controls, but it does make perfect sense after a while.

Epic.  Really great writing.  How long does it take you to complete a write up like this?

Great read as ever, with lots of information. I also read most of the interview you linked to, which offers a nice view of game development in the early 80's. This is the kind of gaming history that really interests me, and which I like to share with my friends who pretend they don't care. But I can tell they do.

Wow, great article.  I hope you get some attention for this; it's the kind of article I could see going viral if it just catches a spark.

Depends. I write them out a few months beforehand, then re-read them over and over and edit them the right way. With research, playtime, writing and editing, I think the exact amount is "a crapload." It's fun, though, so I don't mind.
