I recall I used the emerald swords the first time as well, or at least tried it but it was so slow going. Basically had to kill a ghost, run back to the previous level and heal up, and repeat until you cleared a small area. Then do the same for the next area and hope for no respawn. I rember attempting several death runs trying to avoid all the ghosts to get the items you need from that level. I can't recall if I was successful or not. I think I went back to an earlier save so I could use the cube. I can't see doing that level with just the swords.
I almost wept in defeat near the end of the game too. You need to combine these two items to defeat the final boss. One item you pick up near the start of the game. The other near the end. I couldn't find where I put that first item. I thought I might have dropped it, sold it, or what not. But thankfully I decided to check all my characters and found one was wearing it. But that was another situation where you could have easily lost an item and not been able to get any further in the game - or in this case complete it.
There were plenty of games that were this brutal too. And that was fun back then.
I checked out Lands of Lore 2 awhile ago. I don't think I ever got that one and I can see why. They really changed the game up by going 3D. The controls are so convoluted, that even after re-mapping, I quit 40 minutes in and unisntalled. Sheesh.

LoL does require you to keep items from the beginning until the very end, which is unusual today. At least the game makes it clear that these items are important (I mean, the king sends you to pick up the Ruby of Truth and bring it to him. You shouldn't abandon that mission, after all). AFAIK, LoL2 also requires earlier items to complete the game, but there's often nothing to really separate them from the other things you find.

hopefully we'll have a new publisher announcement soon! 1. We still love classic games, Santa. We want to bring more of our top publishers to GOG.com, and we're happy to say that we've finally gotten all of the paperwork and preparation for our next big new publisher finished. We hope that our gaming fans will be as excited by the incredible classics that we'll be bringing to you guys soon, as we have been getting them ready to release.

Loved this game way back when but not sure how it holds up now. It's an arcade beat'em up/shooter hybrid.

The Team 17 catalog isn't all that great from what I recall. Basically Worms, Body Blows and Alien Breed are their most memorable game series. If they want great arcade games they need to get Psygnosis on there - although I think most of those games I loved were Amiga exclusives.

Hey, there's actually a mystery GOG countdown happening, so that fits the title again! New publisher coming Thursday: What Kind of Hero Will You Be?Two new games with "characters that are now a standard in their genres." What kind of hero will you be when our new big publisher joins GOG.com?
Wow, a Monday release and big news today? Is it the end of days?
As we‘ve already told you, 2012 will be a year of grandeur for GOG.com. To prove that, another big publisher will join GOG.com in a move that wasn’t predicted even by the Mayans (and they knew a lot about 2012). Our new publisher carries an impressive portfolio with some of your all-time favorite game heroes that will join the GOG.com catalog in coming weeks. Two game characters that are now a standard in their genres will grace our catalog on this Thursday with as we launch the publisher with style, bringing you two new games on one day.
What kind of hero will you be on that day? What are our two major releases?
GOG.com will be giving you clues about the new publisher right here on our forums, hints about one of the two heroes you’ll see on Thursday via Twitter and clues about the other hero on Facebook.
I'm thinking Eidos with the releases being Deus Ex and Thief, as they've made references in hints to a hidden hero for one of them and, as someone pointed out, Deus Ex had a similar line to "What kind of hero will you be" in a trailer. I also have no doubt that I'll be proven wrong on Thursday and still say, "I knew it!" Also, Gothic 3 Forsaken Gods Enhanced EditionGT Link

you can get the Deus Ex games almost anywhere, so I doubt they'd be tooting their horn about that, which means that they probably are.

Grim Fandango, perhaps? Manny Calavera "works" (it's more of a lifestyle... er, deathstyle) for a huge organization, he's cold (dead), solid (skeleton. Not much plump flesh there) and a loner, and his quote on that list points to the second hint, even if it's a bit of a stretch: "You can't hide from the Grim Reaper. Especially when he's got a gun".
It's the only one in the list that seems to match in any way to me at least. *shrug*

I see a couple of others that could fit the bill: Agent 47 or Solid Snake (albeit I think only one or two of his games showed up on the PC).

ok, their Twitter clues are: Will you be the kind of hero that knows how to stay unnoticed?
Will you be the kind of hero that was friends with a rabbit?
Will you be the kind of hero that can speak French and Russian.
Will you be the kind of hero that prefers not to use guns? all except the rabbit point to Deus Ex. the rabbit sounds familiar in reference to the game also, but I can't quite place it. [edit] and the main site now says 'be the best cyberpunk sleuth'....

They've pretty much given it away now with all the clues, and it's Spoiler for Hiden: Eidos. The hero clues lead to Agent 47/Hitman and the "best cyberpunk sleuth" is Sly Boots (Anachronox! )

The hero clues lead to Agent 47/Hitman and the "best cyberpunk sleuth is Sly Boots (Anachronox! ) considering how the latter never got a sequel to finish the story I cannot get excited about it. maybe they can get the rights to Contracts, which is the only one of that series I don't have anymore.

wait... hero 1 is 'a futuristic freedom fighter' and 'he's/she's American and knows how to handle a pistol, shotgun or an assault rifle'.... Deus Ex again (plus the latest pixelated pic is definitely Deus Ex)..
hero 2 'is a stealthy assassin', Agent 47.
so, who's in for Daikatana?

Something that's really a must have for Thief Gold is the fan-made texture pack. It's an old game and the original textures were only for a 256 color pallet, whereas the fan pack updates it to hi-color (16k). It also added some new textures that looked significantly better. I don't have the link for it anymore, but I remember still being able to find it a few years ago.

man, if they had gone with $5.99 I'd be all over it, but I don't feel like paying $9.99 for a game that old- it's just a matter of principle.

This is the one I always used - http://www.ttlg.com/thievery/patchguide.htmHasn't been updated in nearly a decade, so there's probably a better version available somewhere.

GoG is also running a sale for the month of February. If you buy two or more full-priced games at the same time, you get 10% off the total.

I'm going to echo CK's earlier comment... 10 bucks a piece is just a little too high for me to pull the trigger rather than dig them out of my basement. If that price got me both or they were $5.99 I would seriously consider it, even if they are just a bunch of logic puzzles loosely strung together. I remember having to buy a CDROM drive back in the day just for this one game. I'll keep an eye out for a sale.

I feel the same way. I wonder if this isn't a publisher influenced decision, though.
I love Thief. It's one of my all time favorites. But do I even need it again, let alone for $10? And I just know that 7th Guest isn't going to hold up in this day and age.
