probably old news but I tried out MineZ minez.net tonight and aside from the usual asshattery of playing with other people, it's kind of fun.  like a blocky version of DayZ. 

That looks like a lot of fun. Nice find.

I'd definitely give that a try.  At least I know the interface is nowhere near as terrible as DayZ.

the problem with spawning is that it is semi-random so you might spawn alongside someone else, but you'll often find yourself spawned way out in bfe without a hint of where to go.  you might end up spawning right outside one of the major towns as I did once and then get chopped in the back when you go to loot a chest.  it's really annoying as you have no way to get revenge on them and you'll seemingly be killed for no reason other than you opened a chest before they did. 

noise is very important in this game and you can often let groups of zombies pass by you if you stay quiet and duck. 

I had decent luck once with a random player when we both decided to team up and got some decent loot not long after spawning.  the problem with the system as it exists is that unless you find food, you will die in a very short time from hunger.  I felt this was a cheap death as I hadn't even been in game for more than a single day.

I've been playing MineZ today and it's pretty fun.  As usual the Minecraft combat isn't particularly great, but overall I'm having much more fun than DayZ.  Especially after they updated the servers a bit ago to reduce some wonkiness.

With the spawning, I think you always spawn along the southern edge of the map, so if go East or West you will soon enough run into something.  I soon got to recognize several areas around where you spawn.  There is also a road that seems to run across the whole thing.  Once you get some goodies it's fun to just start heading North and explore for cool stuff.

I do agree that it can be really hit or miss with food.  One life I found a ton of it, and the next I ended up dying of hunger because none of the chests I found had anything edible.  You can also try to kill zombies to get them to drop meat, but it's fairly rare.

And for anybody interested, the experience on the Private (ie: paid) servers is significantly better, as you may expect.  The asshat to normal person ratio approaches near 0, unlike the public servers.

I just did the cheapest 30 day one as a trial to see if I liked it, so that was $10.  I'm not sure I want to pay more than that yet, but this one was worth it for me. 

There are obviously still people who run around trying to kill others, but the general quality of interactions is much higher.  Besides getting away from the unwashed masses, you can see twice as much terrain in any direction which is really useful for exploring and finding special areas.
