1.9 pre-release was leaked today. Grab it from the official twitter account.
"Leaked" and "grab it from the official" do not go together.

Exactly. It was released on the official site for everyone who has purchased the game to try it out.

And yes, there's villagers. And 2 more mob types in the Nether. And 3 new blocks in the Nether. And like 5 new items to find.

Yeah, not yet sold on the villagers. The nether dungeons, however, are awesome.

Also, you can milk a mooshroom for some stew.

So it's finally done and feature complete...  Tongue

I wonder when they will let us DL the "final" version patch? I'm eager to move on from the pre-releases, as I tend to start a completely new map with each patch.

So today is the official launch day for Minecraft 1.0.  I'm not sure what time they intend to pull the switch, but I've been avoiding all of the non-patched beta beta releases so this should be some good fun.

Oh, and here's an infographic charting the growth of Minecraft (both players and additions to the game):

How did you figure that out? Did you have 32 bit installed or something?

So is there still not a point in level in 1.0? I am level 3 but don't see what ti does.

yeah, I had 32 bit installed.   I found out when I checked the video settings under the options screen it said I could only have render distance set to far if I had 64 bit Java installed.

I fired this up to download the update and try it out yesterday, but I just couldn't get into it.  I think part of it was that I started a new world right near an NPC town and that just doesn't feel like Minecraft to me.  There's no sense of taming the wilderness alone when there are [ugly ass] NPCs just chilling in their little houses next to rows of crops.  The sense of adventure and discovery just wasn't there anymore.

I'm sure I will go back once I burn out on Skyrim, but for now color me a bit disappointed.

I am not sure if I like the towns either, they don't' really add anything, but I have been the opposite otherwise. I had been completely burned out on the game but started playing while waiting for Skyrim to come out. I got completely addicted to it again, so much so I have barely touched Skyrim. Been exploring a huge cave system, building a large house, etc. Been having fun and I don't even notice much difference since 1.8.

The towns are certainly a "for the future" thing, I think. I wonder how, now that Notch considers this "released" future updates will appear? In some way, he *should* get paid for continued development but in other ways the game still has that unfinished feel (even if it is more fun and polished than many AAA titles).

The strongholds and ruins have more of an impact on the game than the towns, so search those out.

Word is they've hired a new programmer to work on NPC AI so the people in the towns should improve at some point.  1.0 really isn't complete, there's still lots for them to do.  It's more of a beta-beta.   retard  I think they're just calling it 1.0 because of the promise to release 1.0 at Minecon.  Maybe they'll release 2.0 for Minecon 2012.   icon_lol

Paul Soares is doing an updated tutorial for 1.0.0 here http://youtu.be/B36Ehzf2cxE

By the way I met Paul and his family at Minecon, pretty cool guy.  I happened to be wearing my Octopus Overlords shirt and he remembered the site.  Turns out he's one of us old timers from the Gone Gold days.  icon_cool

Don't know if this is the right thread (I haven't posted in the PC forum for awhile) but in case this hasn't been mentioned before, there is a helicopter mod for Minecraft 1.1. I've been testing it out and it does work. Maybe people have done something like this before, but it's new to me, as they say. Pretty cool. Apparently it's been in beta for awhile, but it's now "officially" released to support Minecraft 1.1

You read it right - Instead of pocketing his sizable dividends, Markus "Notch" Persson distributed nearly 3 million dollars to fellow Mojang employees! He stated that his fellow employees (often referred to as "Mojangstas") are "a massive part of the reason Mojang is the best place on earth to work at right now." There are 25 employees working at Mojang - you see can see them all right here!

so I got bored this weekend and decided to fire up Minecraft for the first time in awhile.  I decided to scrap all of my old worlds because of all the changes and start fresh.  I created a few new seed worlds, but nothing really caught my fancy until the one I created earlier.  I was wandering around, noticing a bunch of deep holes in the ground, and came across this:

figuring it was another small cave I went up to the edge, and was glad I wasn't wandering around at night:

that would have been one hell of a fall  eek  to top it off the map is pretty resource rich.  I've already gotten a nice stack of iron, so I've been able to pretty much skip stone tools.  there is also a ton of animals nearby, and I've been replanting trees so I've got a nice setup.

it's amazing how much has changed.  I had a zombie drop an iron sword as loot in another world which was nice, and beds becoming your respawn point means no more hoping you get lucky with a decent spawn point.

[edit] figured which one it was on the seed list I got sent; if anyone wants to check it out it is 8700829340959843130.  AFAIK it should generate the same world

Mods are totally where Minecraft is at now, IMHO. Put in Buildcraft, Industrial Craft, Thaumcraft, Mystcraft, Forestry, and Equivalent Exchange, and you'll never run out of things to do. biggrin

The 'core' game just seems so dull now.

That said, Minecraft's world generation rarely ceases to impress. Crazy how this game has sold like 12 million (if memory serves, like 6.6 million on PCs, 3 million on XBLA, and the rest on Android/iOS) copies, no?

Agreed about the world generator.  I'm surprised that the engine hasn't been rented out to other games the way 3d engines have.

I think that window may be closing as there are some voxel based engines out there for Minecraft like games that look better.

built a nether portal in game last night, but I kind of miss the wackiness of the multiplying portals bug that popped up when they first implemented them.  I built it to make an attempt at getting to The End, but the Nether still isn't very much fun
