I thought the point of him moving from alpha to beta was to have all features locked down and just focus on bug fixing and polish.  Not that I'm complaining about neat new stuff being added, but ever since the hell portals got added I've been holding off on playing so I can start a fresh world with all the final features present.

I have a feeling it's going to be constantly evolving as they figure out how to do new things.  I'm starting to think of it as a MMO, where it's never truly finished.

Experience won't do anything (short of dropping TONS of orbs when you die, which is outright killing servers) until 1.9. Also, villages will be empty (no people inside them, just the buildings themselves) until 1.9 as well.

I wouldn't wait much longer, they have more features to add and I think they will keep doing so as long as people have an interest in the game.  Notch has even said that for somebody already playing the game their launch won't be anything more than the day they the "beta" label off the game, since they will be changing it up until that date and probably more afterwards.

Every time a new major patch comes out I tend to start a new world (or two) and label them with the version number.  It's fun to see the constant improvements and it sounds like this update will have more than normal.

got a tip about the seed teamfortress2,  it's an interesting world.

Spoiler for Hiden:
basically it's a small island, and apparently that is it, everything else is underwater.

I played around with 1.8 last night, and it seems like the game doesn't generate terrain as fast as it used to.  I'd turn around at my spawn point and see stuff still being filled in, and when exploring I'd encounter stuff generating  really slow too.  it's been awhile since I played- is that normal with the latest builds?

I played a good amount of this over the weekend and didn't encounter a single bug.

5) Villages. Definitely rare as I travelled all over the place trying to find one and didn't run across anything. This was my one disappointment, as I wanted to find a village to set up as my home but couldn't
...
9) Endermen. A fun new enemy.  Not as hard to kill as I was expecting but the porting mechanic makes them interesting.  They also drop ender pearls sometimes. Not sure what those are used for.

That's about all I can remember off hand.  My experience has been that personally it's bug free and really enjoyable. I'll be sticking with this version until it becomes official.

I haven't found many bugs either although I really don't play that heavily.  Try the seed 'bAnAnAs' (uppercase A's, it's case sensitive) I found three villages in close proximity with that one.  Ender pearls supposedly can be used against endermen.  I think if you hold one and right-click on an enderman you can push it away from you.

Delayed due to a ton of needed bug fixes. However, a new beta has shown up for people to test if they want.

Well, I fired up 1.8 and did a bit of exploring, and there are certainly some new things!

The biggest for me was at the bottom of a big hole I saw a couple wood arches.  Nothing special, but I thought they shouldn't be there.  After getting down there I discovered that it was just a view into a whole abandoned underground mine, complete with those wooden supports all over, rail cart tracks and everything.  And tons of monsters.

It was also very easy to get lost, as it was multiple layers of those tunnels going in all directions and all looking alike.  After smashing my third monster spawner and discovering my fourth treasure chest I finally gave up and just had to dig my way to the surface again.  Very cool, though.  smile

Oh, and spiders suck more than ever now that they poison you and seem to be able to go through slots that are 1 across and 2 high.  frown

There's actually two types of spider now. The old familiar one that is unchanged and the new cave spider which is small enough to fit through a one block opening and is poisonous. As far as I can tell there's no in-game cure for the poison yet other than just waiting it out.

OK, Endermen kinda lose any possible scariness when the first time you encounter them they are on fire from sunlight....

started up a new single player world which I'll have to take some shots of.  the starting point is in a swamp like area, with a large mountain chain nearby and a large chasm too.  been going out at night to kill mobs and collect XP-  does that stuff have any use yet, or is that 1.9?

damn rainstorm ruined my attempt at slashing and burning the swampland.  it was pretty impressive though.  found a nice tall mountain that is all on it's lonesome (I think) that just screams to be hollowed out and turned into a tower.  I'll have to scout it out tonight.

oh yes, the Minecraft bug has bitten again.

new things I like since last time I played:
  • new lighting system rocks.
  • weather is cool.
  • love the new environmental look.  the vines hanging off the trees and tall grass really add to the atmosphere.

a couple of observations about rain and mobs, spoilered just in case:

Spoiler for Hiden:
  • it puts fires out, including fires on creatures that normally would burn during the day.
  • apparently Endermen do not like rain.

another thing I've noticed is that there seem to be more mobs wandering about, both monster and otherwise.  apparently I set up near a cow spawn point, which is good as cows now drop meat, leather and XP.  oh, and meat is stackable now.

I got a couple.  found one laying right outside the front door of my home base.  Endermen don't seem to be all that creepy or dangerous, espeicalliy when they run themselves off the edge of a chasm while charging you.

Is there a way to disable the display of the game name and version number in the corner?  I can't find anything in the options.

Also, did he decide not to make torches burn out?  I thought that was planned to go live months ago.

Yeah, that never happened and we never got the lanterns.  I'm guessing because it just didn't work for the balance of resources used and utility.

I finally found a Stronghold by sheer luck.  I was just digging up some coal I found while treking through the forest and underneath one of the coal veins was a stone brick block.  I broke through that and fell into a stronghold.  It was pretty cool, but disappointing overall.  There were very few monsters, so exploring it was easy.  For now, the abandoned mine shafts are way more dangerous and lucrative.  Hopefully Notch does something cool for the strongholds in 1.9.

As far as everything else in 1.8, I really like it.  The terrain is far more interesting and caves are just awesome now, especially the new, huge open caves.  Enderman seem pointless and feel more like a novelty than a dangerous creature to be wary of.  Despite a few minor gripes, I really like 1.8.

didn't know there was an issue with beds and outside walls, that's where I put it so I guess that's why.
