Couldn't get Cartographer to work but can't be bothered by trying to figure it out, it looks like it has been abandoned by the creator.  Perhaps a new in-house mapper will be available some day.  On a  strange note, remember when I posted about losing my world after a crash?  Well I started a new game (world 2 which was empty in the main menu) and it was pretty cool right off the bat and I decided to just run into a deep cave and die finding out how deep it went.  Well eventually I did die to a creeper but when I re-spawned I had my old world 2 back!  These worlds were completely different too, it's not like I just forgot what the first one looked like.  I even had my diamond tools in a chest where I had left them prior to heading out to a different cave section.  Very strange.

There are a lot of mapping programs for Minecraft.  Cartograph just tends to be the most popular because its one of the easiest to use and outputs nice maps.  It is unstable however.  When the OO server world went over 150mb it would almost always crash when rendering.  You should check out some of the alternatives here.

Used cartograph today worked just fine, you may have to install MS C++ as noted.

BTW

I tried loading the Albion pack but apparently I am running Minecraft in my browser. How do you get Minecraft to not run in the browser?  I start the game via the minecraft.exe file.

I've never heard of Minecraft running in a browser if it wasn't the old free version.  Do you have the Java runtime installed?

Zinfan - I hope I didn't chase you away earlier today. The one too many fans comment was a joke in reference to your name and another player's name. Silveragefan.

Ahh thanks Archinerd I figured there may be too many players on the server at the time and I have no idea how to check so I bailed to prevent issues.  I'd bring cake but will have to go to the wiki to get the recipe first.

I can't wait for the Tuesday update to add beds. Apparently, sleeping in a bed resets your spawn point to that location - so you could theoretically bivouac in a mine and not lose everything you found while mining!

Sweet.  No more running to the house you built from where you spawned; tired of building little safe houses all over the map.

The ability to reset your spawnpoint changes everything.  I've never really tried to just set out and explore in one direction for miles and miles because I know it'd be too much work to be sure I could retrace my route if I died.  Plus if I start a new world I can now freely explore to find the perfect place to call home instead of feeling like I need to set up somewhere near the startpoint.

I probably won't use them other than to move my initial spawn point into my main base (I usually fortify my spawn point anyways), to me it feels like it would be too much of a safety net.  I like the need for careful exploration, knowing that if anything happens I'll need to travel a long way back to try and reclaim my stuff.

while i certainly won't abuse it like that, it will be very nice not to have to fortify the spawn point just so you have a place to sleep at night after getting jumped by a creeper.

having the ability to forward time into the morning will also be a good thing (assuming that aspect is included)

looking forward to it.

Absolutely, according to Rock, Paper, Shotgun. You can basically skip night if you are hunkered down in your hovel. I imagine that the recipe will require wool, planks, and possibly feathers.

I just realized I should have put all this in "spoiler" tags.

They also won the Seamus McNally $20,000 grand prize at the IGF Awards, along with a $2,500 Audience Award there.

So they got some five awards over last week. Good job for them! The money is nice, but a drop in the bucket compared to what they've already made. I'm looking forward to Scroll, if it has the same level of awesome that Minecraft has.

New OO server map for those interested.

We had to change the orientation because the old was doing odd things.

It looks like they have reached their goal of $150k with a couple weeks left.  They have said that this amount was the bare minimum to complete the project, so anything beyond that will give them more flexibility and open up more options.

I look forward to watching my 2-disc special edition of the final product.  smile
